Cant understand why northbound trains have to slow down,or is it only Cambridge trains only. Seems an awful lot of money to have to spend when this situation has been around for many years. Thanks for posting.
Trains heading north on the ECML that would divert to Cambridge would cross all 4 lines. This meant that ECML northbound/southbound traffic would slow down. Its all about running times. If it shaves 10 mins off the time then so be it. I will visit Hitchin again soon to compare the improvements.

You got the number of the failed train wrong it's actually a class 91
