I'm a new spinner, just a couple of years. I spin on spindles. No wheel yet. I'm allergic to wool. I started making rolags out of acrylic yarns that are like roving. I can spin vegetable fibers and alpaca, silk too. But I like to mix in the acrylic for strength. I think acrylic fibers are very soft, and is a way of adding color that won't run when wash. Thanks for this video.
Hello from Norfolk England. I happened across your podcast and found it totally fascinating. It is very obvious you are an excellent spinner. I have been spinning since the 1980’s and have been a purist as far as my yarns are concerned, thinking about the farmers and fleeces and the environment. However as my grandchildren grow and are thinking about leaving home it has occurred to me that to be sensible and give them an heirloom gift of say a blanket, it has to be ‘youth friendly’. They do not understand the need to hand wash the items I gift even though I explain it in great detail. I have very slowly come to understand there is a place for superwash and acrylic yarns so was fascinated by your demonstrations. If you could position your camera closer to your hands so the yarn you produce or buy is easier to see, it would be even more fascinating. Thankyou so much.😊
So glad you stumbled upon my video💜 It seems the older I get, the more I understand the practicality of my grandmothers. While I prefer natural materials, I can also see why they were so excited when man-made materials arrived on the market😹 It is wonderful to live in an age where so much variety allows us so much choice😊 Thank you for the suggestion on the camera. I think I found a better setup during my Vlogmas 2022 spin-along😸 Happy Spinning 🧶
I have wanted to add some white into rolags or batts and worried about bleeding, so I am happy to see this. I will see what I can find out there. Thank you. I definitely have those "this is not what I wanted to do" moments. LOL
Thank you for this video. This was very interesting. There are many reasons for using non natural fibers. I am not a fiber snob and won't ever be one. Durability and adding color is why I use acrylic.
Hi, I'm a new Spinner, this was very informative and fun to watch. Thankyou so much for this video podcast . I'm definitely going to look for some of this Acrylic Roving. Thanks again. Take care and stay safe. Jen xx I've just subscribed to your channel.
You may want to search for bio nylon. It is new on the market and is said to be biodegradable. I would not want to spin with it on its own. I blended it with wool and alpaca. Has a nice sheen to it.
@@angelicinspirations Hi thankyou so much for the information. I'll have a look for it. I know its available in USA, I'm not too sure if its available here in uk but I'll definitely look for it. Thanks again. Take care and stay safe ...Jen xx
Im new at spinning but just got some acrylic to spin the color is so deep and it is so nice to spin. I don’t know if its the fiber or me but what an improvement on my spinning. Thanks for the info on dying might try plying with some wool i spun earlier and try to dye it..
Excellent! Trying different fibers and different fiber preps can really change your spinning in positive ways. When forced to adjust how we spin to accommodate the fiber, we often discover a new level of skill/mastery of the process😊 I hope you try out the dyeing - such fun 😸
Thank you for this. I've been "upcycling" acrylic singles into beautiful lace weights for years. Have you tried spinning the acrylic singles in the S direction? That way the wheel is doing the untwisting work for you. Happy Spinning!
I have thought about it 😊 but I am terrible about remembering when I change spinning directions. However, if I decide to spin some and ply it on itself 🤔 that would be the thing to do 👍
I would blend it with whichever wool I wanted to use for the socks. I had some less-than-luscious red merino that I blended it with for slipper socks. They have worn quite well😊
I have a spindle, I’m learning drop spinning and I’m hoping to card my grandmothers old yarn to respin it into something new. Do you think this is possible?
You can certainly card old yarn😊 work with small sections - no longer than arm length - open up /spit the plies(strands), and then fluff each ply before placing the fiber on the carders😁 good luck

A fun chat to listen to and watch while I hand quilt! Thank you for sharing!

I agree 😊 and I am glad you found the video. We live is a wonderful world where there is often choice in the fibers we use.

@@jenniferbrighty5120 Hi. I'm in the UK. I think I got mine at World of Wool. It's certainly cheaper than merino and other wools.
