That polka dot navy and white reminds me of my mother. She wore a navy and white polka dot dress with a wide brim hat for her register office wedding to Dad the day before, or was it the day after, World War 2 broke out. She wished she had kept it as that fabric has come into fashion so many times since! Sadly she is no longer with us but I would have loved to make her another.
I've literally sewn the last stitches on that one tonight and am looking forward to sharing it with you, so many people have made reference to it. What lovely references to your wonderful Mom.
I just loved all the dresses. So pretty with fabulous suggested fabrics. I am normally in scruffy clothes - full time care giving for my hubby and retired. Even church doesn't get my best so this just was what I needed to see. What a pick me up. Blessings
Wow , great picks for summer weddings! My mom wore a white and navy polka dot dress to her brother's wedding way back in 1962 when I and my 2 sisters were just little. It had a full skirt and she wore it with bright red shoes. She looked amazing. It's a look I've always wanted to recreate but never have. The second dress you showed would make a beautiful wedding gown. The high-low dress I actually made for a client as a wedding dress. I lined the skirt in the same satin. I wish I had a reason to wear one of those beautiful dresses.
Thanks for sharing Jennett, I've actually just finished the polka dot one tonight so I'll look forward to sharing that with you soon. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the high low dress!
Wish there was a 'love it' to select for this video not just a 'like'. ❤ I've got several weddings I'm trying to plan dresses for and this has been so useful - thanks Lucy!
Oh wow that's brilliant news, thank you. Lucky you, I bloomin love a good wedding, but most of my friends are married now so I'll have to wait for the next generation!
S8875 is one of my faves! I have two. One was in jersey which I wear at least once a week in a similarly dark patterned fabric to yours, and one was in woven and wore it as an ‘over the top’ wedding guest dress, loved it, and use the long sleeve for most of my other dresses, and add a cuff to most of them. Thanks for all the ideas Lucy. Susan xx
I love the dresses you made as well as the patterns and fabrics you showcased. I think you’ve really got a gift at choosing beautiful fabrics and pairing them with the perfect pattern. Such a fun video!
Hi Lucy! I absolutely love the Lous dress - it’s exactly what I was looking for for a wedding I have this summer! 😍 It’s not sized up enough for me though - I’d need at least one step up on it for sizing. Do you know any other patterns like it which would have a better range in sizes? 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hello Lucy, from Newfoundland, Canada. I love watching Sew Essential, you give me so much inspiration. I look forward to all your episodes. We seem to have the same style in fashion. I love the sleeve pattern you used in this dress. Would it be possible for you to share the vogue pattern number you used? It will be very much appreciated. Many thanks, Darlene. 😊
Lucy I love all of them especially the last one. I've started pilates and my body shape is changing ING. I'm petite with a F cup. So very scarey to try more shaped garments ❤
Thank you I'm so glad. I reckon you would definitely need a full bust adjustment, although it sounds scary it is pretty simple to do once you know how. I recommend this book for fitting, it is my Bible www.sewessential.co.uk/the-palmer-pletsch-complete-guide-to-fitting-book
Was it our stretch lining? Libra? I think that's it the one I used for the retro dress. YOu can find it here www.sewessential.co.uk/fabrics/dressmaking-fabrics/linings/stretch-lining
Nicely done with your examples, and as always, you make a good model! After you're done with all this studying are you still going to work for Sew Essential or are you moving in a different career path?
Thank you that's very kind of you. No I'm here to stay at the moment, the course was related to the business and, good news, I've finished it and already have sewn a new dress!
I just loved the video. What a gorgeous taille you have. Ik heb curves. Het is niet gemakkelijk om deze prachtige, maar passende jurken voor mij te maken. Desalniettemin heb ik genoten van jouw enthousiasme!❤
Question: The Simplicity 8330 you made and did not use a zip, did you line the skirt or the bodice? Also if I use a slightly stretchy velvet, do you think I could get away without a zip or a lining?? I believe it’s probably 30% stretch. Also did you skip the interfacing step?
So disappointed in this post - all those patterns would suit someone with a figure like Lucy - most of them were ‘waisted’. Let’s have some suggestions for those of us without a perfect figure.

Ah that's great to hear Margaret that it perked you up, thank you so much for watching
I am thinking that the dress with a high-low skirt would look lovely in georgette or lined with the same fabric. Truly a gorgeous pattern
I absolutely love that one, I really must make it!
So glad I found you ❣️

Another lovely assortment of fabric and patterns. Great choices Lucy....Grace
Thanks so much Grace, it's always so lovely to hear from you.
HI Lucy! Gorgeous dresses and fabrics! I need more activities in my life to wear them to, and like you, more time to sew!
Haha yes indeed! Some of them can definitely be worn day to day I think, but some of them you would definitely need an occasion I agree.
Great suggestions. Thanks for sharing your beautiful dresses 😊
It's a pleasure, thank you
Great video. Just what I’m looking for. Got another wedding in August
Yay! Enjoyu sewing something special
Liebe Lilo, so wie immer mal wieder toll erklärt. Deinen Rock in zwei Lagen Stoff finde ich eine Superidee. Liebe Grüsse, Patricia

Wish I had a wedding to go to! Thanks for sharing your inspiration ❤
Me too! I love a good wedding! There are lots of other excuses to make pretty dresses though and I'll keep finding them!
Would love to see more boat neck dress patterns.
I love the patterns and the fabrics are beautiful. Thank you
Your dresses are beautiful.
Thank you so much
Stunning dress🔥❤️
Your color choices are fabulous ❤

I am wanting a V neck sleeveless bias cut dress pattern. Are you able to make a recommendation? size 10/12z
Hi Lucy, does the scuba feel OK in hot weather?
I've actually worn it in Spain in the height of summer and it was fine
Which Vogue pattern did you use as substitute sleeve pattern please?
