    I started ritalin at the age of ten. I was a pretty angry and impulsive kid. They gave a pill to me every day and didnt tell me what it is. They told me to say theyre vitamins if a classmate asks (dont forget that im ten) and i "by chance" saw a video at age 12 telling stuff about ritalin and i could read by then so i now knew they werent vitamins. When i asked they couldnt say no. But i had no idea about it i was taking it for two years and the video told me its a good thing. I couldnt even think about it i was just hurt _again_ because everyone lied. Im 18 now. My brain is 'normalised'. I look back in my life and dude... i hate being normalised. I was a smart kid, i learned reading and basic english on my own at age 5. I used to read anatomy and biology books at age 6,7... and understand it. I used to paint,draw, build stuff; i used to open up machines and looked into them, i was into space and gravity and shit. Now i fuckin feel like my iqs down. Now i dont do them. But hey, I can manage tasks that are given to me! So... you know... im a better and easier kid... I am now a normal task manager which does bettter in her steampunk conveyor belt school. At least i do better at focusing on my task when the bell rings, so hurray! Think of it man i could have been like that weirdo charlie chaplin, have you seen that moron in modern times!

      at 40 and it worked for me. I do wish I had started earlier.

      @@cats9654 RIGHT HE CANT DO SIMPLE MATH BECAUSE HIS BRAIN DOESNT WORK RIGHT. You literally just proved my point with your lecture there lady. I started meds at 40 yrs old, it was the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I got straight A’s and I was finally able to finish my degree. Go actually READ scientific papers on the effects of medicine on the brain with ADHD. Or go read a scientific journal about ADHD by you know, actual DOCTORS THAT GO TO SCHOOL FOR TEN YEARS AND SEE NUMEROUS PATIENTS A DAY. You can’t sit there and think you are right. You sound like an old fool and if you think being stubborn is some sort of badge you need to wear proudly you are extremely delusional. Meds are not for everyone, but if they are truly ADHD I wish I would have been diagnosed earlier. It would have been a lot easier knowing what the hell was happening to me when my brain was going 100 mph with 100 different thoughts all at the same time. You don’t even get it. You really don’t.

    I was a behavior problem in early elementary school. Because i had a poorly qualified mother to say the least. And an abusive stepfather. The result I was raised on drugs for problems I didn't have. Like I was the reason I was getting beaten. From age 5 to 13. Id like to know what in my life at 38 I can link to that type of drug abuse. I became a modern day mini-giant at 6'9" buy often felt to weak to be this big. Easily fatigued. Lacking a masculine muscle structure no matter joining marines and getting strong. Now disabled arthritis and nerve damage. Can these connect?

    Excellent video! I appreciate you bringing to us pure scientific literature in a condensed way. I always felt like I have borderline ADD and always wanted to take Ritalin or Adderral, but after watching this video and seeing some possible long term effects, I'm reluctant to just try it out willy nilly. However, the other option I was considering as therapy for my "self-diagnosed borderline ADD" was meditation. I would really appreciate it if you could do a video on the current scientific literature about the effects of meditation on the brain - effects on the default mode and possibly other structures in the brain. Thanks!

    I didn't understand the part with the dopamine transporters. Does the permanent increase mean there will be more dopamine in the brain and therefore a person will be able to focus better? Because my main fear is that for one reason or another I decide to stop taking the drug, and dopamine production is lower than before I took it and therefore i'll end up worse. Should that be a concern? (I haven't decided yet if I want to take it)

    • @jhmmgf4236
      @jhmmgf4236 5 лет назад +4

      No the increase in transporters means that long term you are getting worse.However is it permanent?I am not sure but it will last a long time maybe 1-2 years or something after you stop

    • @idan7989
      @idan7989 5 лет назад +4

      Dopamine transporters are the things that remove dopamine from your brain, therefore you'll end up with worse adhd than before taking the meds.

    • @henrirapson1403
      @henrirapson1403 2 года назад +4

      But the science presented here also says that the size of affected brain regions is augmented over the long term. Meaning that the increased number of transporters could be an adaptation to the brain regions developing to their proper size.

      My doctor and I tried the natural route for 3 months. After feedback from teachers we decided its best for my son to start on lowest dose Ritalin. His marks went up and he seems to binge eat less. His teacher said that adhd untreated can lead to drug abuse (self medicating). I was a drug addict so I'm well aware how it is. If it can prevent addiction later in life then it is worth a shot?

      Please, as someone who suffers long term emotional suppression and chronic depression as a result of years of childhood “medication” do not do this to your child.
      These drugs have left me with a disability that has affected near every aspect of my life.
      Think about this, if you think your child’s behavior is a little too much or not ideal. These drugs work by suppressing the function of the brain that contribute to these emotions. You are dulling the soul of your child. And for many children, myself included, the affects can be permanent.

    Very interesting. I took Ritalin for a month as a kid in elementary, I'd just fall asleep. Didn't go back on meds. I'm now in my 30s, and started dextroamphetamine, and I'm really dissappointing at how sparse the literature is. It seems that even the studies that are done are widely inconclusive. Then when examining anecdotal evidence, it's even more inconclusive. I find anecdotally, many people who are detractors of the drug tend to report the same symptoms I report, except they report them while on the drug, and I report them while off the drug, which leads me to question if they are indeed in need.
    I guess what I will do is keep a medical journal, and try to break up my usage to avoid dependency, so that my symptoms don't get worse while off the drug.
    Going into taking the meds my 2 largest concerns was a dependency issue (not addiction), where tolerance raises, and my symptoms worsen while off the meds. And 2nd, potential cardiovascular damage due to repeat usage. I haven't found any reports on the latter, and a few reports both from studies and anecdotally of the former.

    I refuse any medication as an adult because I was forced on legalized meth as a kid. I was forced to take my mother held me down and forced it down my throat. I eventually had an adverse reaction. If I had of known that the medication was legalized meth I would have sued the doctor when I turned eighteen. My mother is still stupid my dad disagreed with drugging me. He would laugh at her and claimed he was stupid until the day he died. After the reaction, she was determined to still control me. When I turned 14 I eventually beat the hell out of her. Of course I would also get ahold of those parenting books she would get read them and turn the tables around on her. I got her so upset she got the belt out and I took it away from her and turned the tables on her. Dad looked at her said he knew that day would come and kicked her out. She left and I never had a problem. When she tried to have me diagnosed I sat mute in the Doctors office and never talked to him. I refused to take tests. Funny how I could be diagnosed with anything. I watched Dad sit there and tell the doctor before the test that mom was stupid. So I took the lead.

    It's a bullshit disorder, at least with me
    .. in the early 70's I was diagnosed with hyperactivity... it was more so PTSD caused by seeing my sister, then 5 y/o being raped.. I was 4... I started acting out because I didn't know how to tell what I had seen... nor did I understand it... my activity changed, I was taken to a psychologist.. he diagnosed me as hyperactive... later in life I was diagnosed as anti-social and possibly sociopathic.... I was after 10 beaten constantly by a step father who had kick the dog syndrome, I was the dog... I was not a child that needed a bullshit medication, I needed empathy and time... but no, I was put into a mental prison by ritilan and dilantin for my siezures from the ritilan.... to anyone who jumps at ritilan as a solution is an idiot without researching yourself ...

I don’t see how a psychologist can diagnose a child when the child doesn’t say or do anything during the session. It is much easier to give your kid a pill (and to take them yourself) than to do the hard work of making major lifestyle changes. Not saying medication can never be beneficial, because it absolutely can. But I would love to see studies of how many people try dietary changes (little to no sugar, no processed foods, whack tons of fruits/veggies, whole grains, no funky dyes/fake flavoring etc) along with getting outdoor excerise. Less screen time, more bike riding, walkimg, family camping trips. Behaviour modification with a qualified therapist... Like how many people really put forth the effort of this before dosing their kids with amphetamine based drugs, or themselves popping anti depressants, blood pressure meds etc? America takes more meds than any other country in the whole world. Everybody wants the easy, quick way out even if it will cause more damage long term. Lazy as fu*k.

    This guy is leaving a lot of stuff out. Probly bc he is a psychiatrist and will make money from giving out ADHD medication. DO NOT GIVE YOUR KIDS ANY MEDICATION. Especially not ADHD meds. I took for only a short time when I was 11 and went from being the most popular kid in school with a million friends. To an adult with terrible anxiety and no friends. I’m 28 years old and have made almost mo progress in life due to anxiety and lack of motivation which comes from taking ADHD medication as a child.

      I agree kids may not need it I needed it in yr 11 and 12 though I would say but little kids it's not necessary.
