Another great video. I also found the Valerion very impressive (again). Can't wait to see a comparison with a calibrated Max model. Thanks for this great job.❤
couple of observations: fast camera pans looked bad on Valerion - picture was tearing and juddering. Nothing as such was observed on JVC. Valerion was brighter in the dark scenes and looked better than the JVC to my eyes, but i'm not sure if that's due to lack of calibration or comparable gamma settings. Highlights were handled way better on the JVC - sky had a distinct tone whereas Valerion was clipping them into whites. JVC clearly has a better dynamic range. Both were way off in the cyans and rendered them as blue hues. Watch the yacht footage at night. They were totally off. Both were also poor in rendering brown hues (yacht wood interiors), rendering them as yucky punchy reds. Overall, JVC wins, but not by a cost difference. Maybe by 20 to 30 %. Compared to reference video, both are off quite significantly. Valerion is big time better value for money. I imagine Valerion MAX version will be even closer to the JVC, while being only slightly more expensive than Pro 2. Bottom line - both projectors are far from even the crappiest OLED or QLED TVs, let's not pretend otherwise.
These lifestyle projectors are kicking butt!!! I got the Dangbei DBOX02 a couple months ago and I'm happy with it, but this Valerion and the tech coming is just amazing! The fact that retail consumers can now get a great 4k movie experience for $1-3k is great!

You would want to have any footage of the projectors shot also lined up with the same specs if possible. Now, it's almost impossible to do perfectly in practice,. From 4:20 when the camera pans to the right and left it seems the footage from the Valerion has some lag, the JVC a little less. Would this be because it is recorded?
This was not recorded on a splitter, each had its own source to ensure the correct EDID and tone mapping info was sent. The sources were just ever so slightly out of sync.
brightness: valerion color depth: valerion clarity: valerion price: valerion color accuracy: jvc contrast: jvc conclusions: contrast costs a lot these days
Not that I would ever even consider the JVC to buy. But looking at these two side by side they look very similar to my eyes. there were only a few scenes where I "just" prefered the JVC, but overwhelmingly I prefered the Valerian, in fact I found myself just drawn and watching the Valerian for long periods and forgetting to look at the JVC at the same time to compare, I had to watch it all again and force myself to make sure I looked at both.
What is your overall personal impression of this comparison? Judging from this video alone, the Valerion should be the value king of kings. It even seems to have more pop and shadow detail. The only way to truly gauge how different, though, is to see both side by side in person.
🤣😂🤣 After 4 minutes into watching i noticed that the video is actually in the OPPOSITE of what was show on the table 😱😱 Oh my…Valerion is crazy good ❤️❤️❤️ It blows JVC away !!!!!
I think the Valerion's colours were a little off in some scenes, but overall I think I actually preferred it to the JVC. The one area that it seemed to fail was in the very bright HDR scene where the guy is looking down into the camera, with a lit sky behind him. The clouds were completely blown out on the Valerion... but is that worth paying $14k more for the JVC? I don't think so.
Damn. All in all. I think...the valerion wins...it's brighter without lacking blacks and contrast. And it's not overly saturated with color...I want one...your average joe (like me) lol. Would watch this comparison and pick the valerion hands down ,to me it has a better picture or image
Important question: does it flicker? JVC and Sony use PWM dimming and for sensitive people watching their output causes issues like eye strain, nausea etc. You can check that withslow mo feature in any modern smartphone camera.
Two quick questions regarding the Valerion Pro. 1. What models of Screens would you recommend for day & night time viewing? Do you think it's worth to buy for it the Fresnel ALR Screen offered in bundle pack at Kickstarter? 2. Is there a menu in it's OS, which you can use to calibrate color accuracy below delta 3?
I believe I can answer 😉: 1) No one knows about their ALR. Valerion claims a new de-speckle tech but those who got the screen can't share a lot of details. Long throw ALR Fresnel screens are being sold for around 3 years but they are not very popular, as you won't even find reviews on them, just occasional mentioning on AVS. According to one reviewer from Australia on the Valerion screen there is still a bit of a laser speckle but it's not clear whether it's because the screen was not positioned properly as he was testing ceiling mount and might not have flipped the screen upside down - said reviewer packed the PJ up and has no time to test it again. One thing for sure - the minimal laser speckle and the best sharpness is going to be on a decent white screen, if you have the dark room ready for it. Alternatively you can consider 0.6-0.8 gain matte gray screen (not ALR) if you have a light bleed somewhere or reflections in the dark, but still forget about day viewing with it. I gambled and ordered their Fresnel 100" - I figured if it fails I'll still sell it for a couple hundred and the total loss wont be too high for me to worry about. I consider it a learning experience, a very typical thing in the PJ world 🤣 2) For sure there is everything in it to calibrate it properly. You can find the results on YT, avg. accuracy is well below 3. Question is whether you have access to required equipment (costs like several projectors like this) or a company which can do it for you. Personally I'll just use reference images to balance RGB. I'll mostly watch HDR on it anyway (real and RTX HDR through MPC Video Renderer).
@@Fiztex553 Thanks for sharing your comprehensive opinion about the Fresnel ALR Screen. I still wonder - what kind of screen and brand would The Hook Up recommend for Valerion...
Can you share what the best screen is for the Valarion? I hear and read very contradictive info what is best to use is a medium lit room without getting laser speckle. THNAKS!
Damn Valerion looks great. I have an NX5 and was thinking of upgrading to the NZ500 to get more modern tech, less noise and heat while being brighter(small room), and faster HDMI sync times. I’m seriously considering the Valerion Max now… I also have a Lumagen I could pair with it. How is motion compared against the JVC? I like the motion on my JVC FWIW so just curious if we can expect similar performance from the two in that regard.
I don't think I would be looking at that upgrade that way. Valerion has good blacks for lifestyle DLP but in general blacks have been bad with this class of projectors. Like worse than classic 1080p DLP projectors with larger DMD. I highly prefer my really old JVC HD350 to several 4K DLP lifestyle projectors I have tried for movies. Older DILA models don't have low latency for gaming. I am expecting to get passable blacks for Valerion but not inky blacks.
So the Valerian did not have your (Robert's) usual color correction done? We're seeing the OOTB color on the Valerian??? If so... "Wow! Crazy Impressive!"
@thehookupextras is there any way you could make a video comparing ALR Screen vs White Matt Screen, Ceiling Mount vs Non Ceiling Mount comparisons? I feel many people are curious about this, especially people like me who are new to the Projector world but excited to be a part of Valerion. Thank you!!
You are the man!!! Crazy how well it holds up against the JVC beast. Pro 2 even looked better in a couple scenes. Hope the Max will close that gap even more!
wow - just wow - if it wasnt labeled - i would guess Valerion is JVC(are you positive you didnt mislabel them by acident?). In a lot of scenes Valerion is closer to the reference than JVC, and in ALL of the dark scenes i would prefer a much brighter Valerion over possibly lower black leveled JVC. And this is coming from a JVC fan of many years. Will def consider Valerion in my next PJs refresh. Would love to see this Valerion compared to a reference PJ pick of many years - Epson 5050ub
Looks like the Valerion is looking slightly desaturated / less contrasty? I think the white balance might be slightly too blueish (although to my eyes that actually looks more natural, but we do want it to match the color grading)
Your awesome thanks for doing this… I’m amazed at the performance of the Valerion… and from my untrained eye looking through my iPhone screen I actually prefer the Valerion on the brighter scenes… maybe it’s just because it’s brighter looking and harder to distinguish on a smaller screen… also it seemed more juddery. But what was your take?
I haven't seen valerion in person but I tried other triple laser ust (even been to a showdown event), an Epson 5040, a benq 3550 and even a jvc np5 in a dark room clearly wins. The contrast makes a huge difference in image 3d pop. Valerion is native 3000:1. Jvc np5 only appears dim in some instances at 1800 lumens. I enjoy watching jvc on 120" more than I enjoy watching a 77" oled. Oled doesn't get as bright as lcd but oled's image just pop so much more. It's the same as jvc compared to other projectors I mentioned.
Hey hook up, do you think that the Nexigo Aurora Pro beats the visionMaster Pro 2? also you should make a comparation between the best UST and this vision master pro 2.
I didnt see any rainbow effect though something in the quick pans on the edges of the display. looked like a clear vertical wave for a moment. will have to watch it again. Dont know if its possible to see rainbow if not watching it live? cant believe how close it is to the jvc, the colors on the jvc seem oversaturated in the blue/green?
The NZ8 is last gen and as such I imagine would not cost the same as the current gen JVC NZ800 at $15-16k. The JVC black levels are appreciably better in real life and comparisons like this without level calibration mean nothing. In real life I imagine the grey blacks of the Valerion would irritate me and DLP rainbow (although appears to be minimized) probably a major issue. There are positives and negatives on both sides, but I would strongly recommend anyone looking to buy any projector to demo it in person first.
But Valerion stuff can be fixed by going for a Grey Screen without ALR, since it's brightness is higher than JVC you will get better black bars with slight sacrifice in brightness that will still be higher than JVC, and the rainbow issue is usually only visible in ALR screen or poor quality ones, I bet a regular Matte Grey or White won't be visible.
Yes it's an unfair comparison, the JVC was fully calibrated and the Valerion was just out of the box with NO calibration. The JVC is supposed to beat the competition, no doubt.
Thank you for doing this. Would have likes some variation in scene lighting vs mostly very dark. Dark scene are very valuable but also bright scenes to see how it handles those. Looks like the NZ8 was not calibrated as skin tones were far off vs reference and just a little too dark. The Pro2 looked to have oversaturated Red. Maybe calibrate them and re-run the test? Comparing to an NZ5 or NZ500 would be a closer match to what someone may make a buying decision with... NZ8 is a cool comparison, thank you.
@@drcasper 1:37 - "this isn't calibrated, straight out of the box". So are both calibrated or just the JVC? Not sure with his wording, sorry no native speaker.
@@drcasper he says 'its very well calibrated' but he didn't say and he was quoting specs but he did not say it was manually calibrated (like from a pro). JVCs are very good direct from the factory. ... an example of where the JVC looks bad and the Pro2 is far closer to Ref is at 17:35 ... look at the skin tones. JVC is far from Ref, especially when the dark scene they are walking together in the parking lot.
looking at this one more time. One quwstion pops up. In the beginning of the recording at least, i see a lot of artefacts in the left - right pans. Is that the recording or the projector doing that? And is there a way to minimiize it in the software, if it is the projector doing it?
So glad I ordered a pro2. This video and the review you did on main channel confirms that it absolutely prison dates the competition at its pre order price
I would like to know if the Visionmaster Pro 2 would be a significant improvement over my Optoma GT1080 Darbee projector in terms of contrast, colors, and level of detail, or would it just be an okay improvement?
haha considering the price diff, youtube compression this is actually quite mindblowing. Let's throw in the size diff as well :D The darker stuff on the Pro 2 seems to be showing better, specially looking at stuff in the background in the first scenes. On many scenes the Pro 2 is very similar to the reference
You are awesome. This review is excellent which clearly shows its not always the well-known brand that produces excellent quality of images. I have not seen anyone surpass your quality and standard of review of projectors. You are the best reviewer of projectors on RUclips.
the blacks are definitely decently better on the JVC. Would love to compare with another projector I know or at least that is considered a good projector like Epson 5050UB or LS11000 or LS12000. Seems like the color temp is consistently a bit too blue in the Valerion in this comparison.
There was no frame interpolation turned on in this video. If you watch the Epson side by side I turned it on for that one because so many people commented on the choppy video (which is mostly the result of filming).
Also any chance you could share your calibration numbers that you used for the Valerion. I know it’s subjective but when you did it for the JMGO it made a noticeable difference for me… Thanks again!!
One thing I need to ask, were the two projectors images shoot side by side, if yes then you will always find the camera used will favour one over the other due to lumens and the Valerion kicks out more then this would make the JVC look duller. If you have shoot the projectors separate then I think you haven't adjusted the camera right for the JVC because I know these scenes from BP and my JVC looks closer to the reference than in this video. Beside this the Valerion is exceptional for the price and well be very popular.
Yes, of course they were shot side by side. Are you suggesting it would be better to shoot them individually with different camera settings? That would completely invalidate the entire process. I could shoot a $100 projector separately from a JVC and adjust camera settings to make them look nearly identical.
@@thehookupextras when you shot side by side you have two projectors with differing lumens the camera will adjust to the bright light source which in turn will make the others not only duller but crush the shadow detail, had you adjusted the camera to suit the NZ8 the Valerion would have blown it's highlights. Like I already said having a JVC with dynamic tonal mapping I know it will capture all the shadow detail almost as good as the reference. The problem with any comparison like this is a camera can't capture what the eyes can see.
The NZ8 and Valerion have extremely similar peak brightness when the Valerion is in movie mode. However, the main issue is not with peaks but with low ADL scenes where the JVC on laser dimming 1 mode will get very dim and your eyes need to adjust to that new brightness level to see all the detail in the shadows. In contrast the Valerion keeps those scenes brighter by manipulating gamma.
@@thehookupextras I haven't any beef with the Valerion in fact I think it's great we are getting brands offering so much at this price point but I was only saying from experience the JVC is capable of delivering those scenes very similar to the reference in both shadow and highlights which the video can't capture and is giving a slightly bias impression that the Valerion is handling the scenes better which isn't the case at all.
This just proves the theory of diminishing returns is a real thing!! I’m sure when you get up to the big boy screen sizes the JVC shows its chops!! But anything 120 and below….. well brightness and pixel blow out would be less also of a factor. I’m sure in person the JVC must have preformed better than this lol!!
To me the valerion looked better across most scenes, brighter, smoother, finer edges, all watching this on my tcl 98" and pixel peeping. This is an insane performance from a sub 3k projector

In reality, you're left with approximations of what you see in person, which is why people can't get too carried away with what they watch here in this video and why The Hook Up even said it's a little silly. ^_^
To be sure though, it sure looks like this video was made to do a good job of matching what was seen perceptively, and I applaud the work that went into it.
This earned a subscribe.
Why does it look like the valarion is running 24 or 30 fps vs 60 on the jvc and reference? It kind of looks like stuttering🤔
More like 12fps. Something is way off there.
Valerion have a dedicated Cinema mode with 24fps. You can change to higher fps if you want.
The Valerion was running at 60hz instead of 24 so he could take proper video (from his camera) of it, that's why the panning was jerky
@@beinleif524 this
DLP chips can’t produce natural motion blur. He talks about that in his other video where he tests it out.
Thanks for that , very interesting.
I run a Sony HW 55 , can’t stand the rainbows on DLP.
But oh my , i might have to take another look around .
You have to raise the ISO in camera to give the JVC the same luminance as in the reference picture and redo the test .
This is why you are the best! Thank you for doing this!!!!!!!
brightness: valerion
color depth: valerion
clarity: valerion
price: valerion
color accuracy: jvc
contrast: jvc
conclusions: contrast costs a lot these days
Not that I would ever even consider the JVC to buy.
But looking at these two side by side they look very similar to my eyes. there were only a few scenes where I "just" prefered the JVC, but overwhelmingly I prefered the Valerian, in fact I found myself just drawn and watching the Valerian for long periods and forgetting to look at the JVC at the same time to compare, I had to watch it all again and force myself to make sure I looked at both.
At 4:56+ the Valerion has more details and JVC went darker and lost the image
2k vs 14k...easy decision for me. I'd need the JVC to be much, much better to choose it over the Valerion!
What is your overall personal impression of this comparison? Judging from this video alone, the Valerion should be the value king of kings. It even seems to have more pop and shadow detail. The only way to truly gauge how different, though, is to see both side by side in person.
Your reviews are A+
Can you do the Epson LS11000 vs the Valerion Pro 2?
Epson 11000 is most likely not as good. Valerion seems to be the better PJ.
What backpack would you recommend for the NZ8 if I want to bring it to my friend’s house for mario party?
😂
Just an average womans handbag as these take everything + one more.
One extra large ikea bag
You can put it inside your pocket my guy
🤣😂🤣 After 4 minutes into watching i noticed that the video is actually in the OPPOSITE of what was show on the table 😱😱 Oh my…Valerion is crazy good ❤️❤️❤️ It blows JVC away !!!!!
How good is the contrast of the Pro 2 compared to the Nexigo aurora pro? I would be very interested in such a video.
Interesting video but why haven't you commented on the comparison? Thanks
I wonder if a bit more calibration of the Valerian they would look a lot closer.
Why not any feedback on the comparison like always?
I kind of like dark scenes showed by Valerion more than reference or JVC. Looks like great tone mapping and EBL.
Is the Valerion permanently changing the black bars in the black level? Looks like at the scene of Wakanda Forever in the garage.
Important question: does it flicker? JVC and Sony use PWM dimming and for sensitive people watching their output causes issues like eye strain, nausea etc. You can check that withslow mo feature in any modern smartphone camera.
Thanks, images out of both projectors look like total krap. Have you got anything more enlightening to show us?
I have the AWOL 3500. Love it but seeing the Valerion black levels on your other comparison videos has me wondering if I should switch…
I believe I can answer 😉:
1) No one knows about their ALR. I consider it a learning experience, a very typical thing in the PJ world 🤣
2) For sure there is everything in it to calibrate it properly.
Can you share what was the JVC NZ8 laser dimming mode in this comparison video? Thanks!
Thanks For this video. Useful video.
Thank you!!
what would explain the color differences here if both have such low delta e and wide color spaces?
Tone mapping.
You are the man!!! Crazy how well it holds up against the JVC beast. Pro 2 even looked better in a couple scenes. Hope the Max will close that gap even more!
Would love to see this vs the Aurora Pro!
VisionMaster MAX, Will it a good competence for JVC NZ8 and LS12000 for home theater to use with 180" screen?, Please give your honest opinion.
wow - just wow - if it wasnt labeled - i would guess Valerion is JVC(are you positive you didnt mislabel them by acident?).
Great video! Will you do another one with measurements?
Hey hook up, do you think that the Nexigo Aurora Pro beats the visionMaster Pro 2?
also
you should make a comparation between the best UST and this vision master pro 2.
Any chance for comparison VALERION with some close priced UST?
Thanks for that video. Subscribed.
I don’t understand the technical specifications but I just loved the footage from Valerion. You did great as always. Cheers 🥂
I completely agree!!!
Exactly. This video definitely doesn’t show the DLP grey blacks
The NZ8 is under $9k in Canadian dollars now.
Bruh did you not listen to the man ? It's calibrated . This guy can calibrate
Let's throw in the size diff as well :D
The darker stuff on the Pro 2 seems to be showing better, specially looking at stuff in the background in the first scenes. On many scenes the Pro 2 is very similar to the reference
What is the max distance it can project using optical zoom. i want to used them in backard so want to be able to project it further away?
You are awesome. This review is excellent which clearly shows its not always the well-known brand that produces excellent quality of images. I have not seen anyone surpass your quality and standard of review of projectors. You are the best reviewer of projectors on RUclips.
the blacks are definitely decently better on the JVC. Would love to compare with another projector I know or at least that is considered a good projector like Epson 5050UB or LS11000 or LS12000. Seems like the color temp is consistently a bit too blue in the Valerion in this comparison.
where white balance issue is calibratable I would assume
How is the frame interpolation of the Valerion? cause video image looks less constant then the JVC
There was no frame interpolation turned on in this video. If you watch the Epson side by side I turned it on for that one because so many people commented on the choppy video (which is mostly the result of filming).
JVC, Sony and Epson prices are now 100% in an audiophile network switch level BS category.
facts
Shadow detail loss in JVC why?
Valerion is very impressive. What would you say the throw distance is for say a 120" screen?
Do I need to have a pitch dark room to watch this projector or can a illuminated living room have this projector?
Also any chance you could share your calibration numbers that you used for the Valerion. I know it’s subjective but when you did it for the JMGO it made a noticeable difference for me… Thanks again!!
As mentioned, this unit is not calibrated.
The Max will have a dynamic iris. You should review the 3D?
I reviewed 3D performance in my main review.
my observations:
JVC > valerion in color accuracy and black floor
Valerion > JVC with dynamic range
I would go with the cheaper quieter one
Honestly if you change the blue green tone it would be so incredibly similar
I'm happy you're happy with your projector, I'll leave it at that.
Is it true you have to get the Max model if you want to hang it from the ceiling
Why does the NZ8 picture look so blurry? 👀
I mean, they're both shifters, right?
I'd expect that to happen against a native no-shift 4k chip
NZ8 is native 4K shifted to 8K, Valerion is native 1080p shifted to 4K. Neither look blurry.
Looks interesting, especially at the kickstarter price, but I think I'll stick with my Epson LS12000.
Hi... wich screen do you use for the valerion?
To me the valerion looked better across most scenes, brighter, smoother, finer edges, all watching this on my tcl 98" and pixel peeping. This is an insane performance from a sub 3k projector
@thehookupextras Thanks again for doing this!
Wondering if the Color Filter is engaged on the JVC?
Hello, how big is the difference of this valerion pro2 against the hisense C1?
You have reviewed before the Hisense C1 is there big difference.
if you haven't before this would be interesting with the JVC against USTs awol 3500 / hisense px3 pro / nexigo aurora pro, morbid curiosity :P
Is this Much Better Than JMGO No Ultra please? I have been using JMGO for over a year now don't want to get a new one yet as I plan to use it for at less 5 years 😢
Its better than the N1 Ultimate see his latest comparison review. ruclips.net/video/ClIboELoz74/видео.html&ab_channel=TheHookUp
