So glad I ordered a pro2. This video and the review you did on main channel confirms that it absolutely prison dates the competition at its pre order price
Bruh, you are doing the most! I'll bet there are more than just a few of us that wanted to see this type of comparison but didn't want to look goofy asking for it. 😁 Extra 🏅🏅 for the hardest working projector reviewer in the business! Thanks Bro!
Another great video. I also found the Valerion very impressive (again). Can't wait to see a comparison with a calibrated Max model. Thanks for this great job.❤
Not that I would ever even consider the JVC to buy. But looking at these two side by side they look very similar to my eyes. there where only a few scenes where I "just" prefered the JVC, but overwhelmingly I prefered the Valerian, in fact I found myself just drawn and watching the Valerian for long periods and forgetting to look at the JVC at the same time to compare, I had to watch it all again and force myself to make sure I looked at both.
Thanks for the great video, appreciate all the hard work you had to do to make it happen; carrying that JVC around alone must have been a back breaker, hope the cart was close! As for the video, there were definitely scenes where I preferred the Valerion and some scenes where I preferred the JVC; they seemed to trade blows occasionally on which matched reference better. The JVC did seem to crush black details in a lot of scenes though, so I would in a majority of cases prefer the Valerion's image.
Your awesome thanks for doing this… I’m amazed at the performance of the Valerion… and from my untrained eye looking through my iPhone screen I actually prefer the Valerion on the brighter scenes… maybe it’s just because it’s brighter looking and harder to distinguish on a smaller screen… also it seemed more juddery. But what was your take?
Damn Valerion looks great. I have an NX5 and was thinking of upgrading to the NZ500 to get more modern tech, less noise and heat while being brighter(small room), and faster HDMI sync times. I’m seriously considering the Valerion Max now… I also have a Lumagen I could pair with it. How is motion compared against the JVC? I like the motion on my JVC FWIW so just curious if we can expect similar performance from the two in that regard.
You are the man!!! Crazy how well it holds up against the JVC beast. Pro 2 even looked better in a couple scenes. Hope the Max will close that gap even more!
Also any chance you could share your calibration numbers that you used for the Valerion. I know it’s subjective but when you did it for the JMGO it made a noticeable difference for me… Thanks again!!
Valerion might run at 24fps and JVC at 30? That would fuck the image up on camera I guess. Otherwise I agree, it looks laggy but better. Dont know why it does that other than that.
Very interesting comparison - thanks for taking the time to do it. Two questions: 1. What is the source for the 'Reference' video? 2. What were the HDR settings on the JVC? It would also be interesting to feed both of these the output from the madVR Envy, to eliminate tone mapping differences, and concentrate on other aspects of the image. Regardless, thanks again.
@@thehookupextras Thanks. What display is the ripped raw file being played on, and how is it handling or tone mapping the HDR? It just looks a little flat, although viewing all of this on RUclips is likely quite a bit different from in-person. And the HDR Level on the JVC - Auto or another setting?
@@dlcphoto I think you're misunderstanding something. The reference video isn't playing on a display at all. You're simply watching the actual movie clip for comparison. It would be like searching up a movie trailer on youtube, and watching that. The only display in that scenario is the one you're looking at. :-) The better question to ask would be what color space conversions / file format conversions did the reference file see in the production pipeline.
@@ryankramer Thanks for the reply, and yes, this gets towards what I was thinking about. "Reference" would ultimately be seeing what would be seen on the calibrated display used by the film's technical people, capable of fully showing the color space, dynamic range, etc. I understand that. I'm trying to understand how the 'Reference' shown in the video compares with what was seen on that original calibrated display, and how it got from the digital file to an image in the video. And to be clear, this is not intended as a criticism of the video; just trying to fully understand more about the 'Reference' image that is shown.
@@dlcphoto Once the file is locked and 'blessed' from the mastering sessions, the video file is what it is REGARDLESS of that original display that was used to create it. (Pricey though! ^_^) That's why thinking about what the original display was that it was mastered with doesn't really gain you anything and one should focus on the importance of finding the highest quality footage file (with no mastering errors) instead. As for pipeline, speaking generally, the original footage would probably be ripped from a disc. You'd take that footage and bring it into a NLE (Non linear editor) like Davinci Resolve. When you set up your project in your NLE, you want to be matching your project to your file's specs. Things like bit depth, color space, resolution, frame rate, etc. should all match. You would want to have any footage of the projectors shot also lined up with the same specs if possible. Now, it's almost impossible to do perfectly in practice,. Well. There are multiple screnes where I liked the valerion more, which is unexpected. Overall I like the JVC picture more. But maybe $2k more, not $14k more. And thinking about everything except the picture, I have no use for the JVC and the Valerion perfectly fits my needs.
I have yet to evaluate any of the new standard throw ALR screens. The advantage of the PX3-Pro and USTs in general is how efficient the ALR screens are at rejecting ambient light.
Thanks. Just considering color: reference shows push to green, Valerion push to red, JVC strong push to blue. If the JVC is calibrated, and the reference is... reference, where does that leave the Valerion?
The NZ8 is last gen and as such I imagine would not cost the same as the current gen JVC NZ800 at $15-16k. The JVC black levels are appreciably better in real life and comparisons like this without level calibration mean nothing. In real life I imagine the grey blacks of the Valerion would irritate me and DLP rainbow (although appears to be minimized) probably a major issue. There are positives and negatives on both sides, but I would strongly recommend anyone looking to buy any projector to demo it in person first.
Pro 2 held up well, better black levels on the jvc but the pro 2 to me was close to reference on a lot of scenes. Thanks, glad I backed the max version.
Biggest thing I noticed is the motion on the Valerian looks terrible. The JVC looked a bit too dim, but that is easily adjusted. Not sure what can be done about those motion artifacts though. Thanks for the side by side.
Hey hook up, do you think that the Nexigo Aurora Pro beats the visionMaster Pro 2? also you should make a comparation between the best UST and this vision master pro 2.
I'll take the reference footage projector 😂😂 Makes you wonder if my guy is getting any of that $5 million after watching this one. Your opinions matter heavily in the projector market especially in the forums.
WAIT! WHAT???? Did you get the titles reversed? TLDR; the Pro2 just looks more "watchable". The JVC was a bit more accurate overall. (maybe?) My thoughts: in the first scenes (wakanda?) I thought that perhaps the Pro2 was blowing out the reds a little bit too much, but much more enjoyable contrast. when it went to the very bright scene before Will Smith, the JVC looked a tad better, but then on the boat, it appeared the JVC was blowing out the reds AND Most definitely the BLUES. YIKES. I honestly can't believe this. Dark scenes with color, they were both a bit off... the greens really got lost! Really useful putting the reference on there, from a purist perspective, but at the end of the day, one needs to see the content :) Thank you so much for this!!
Both calibrated? Some large differences in the color, slight edge JVC black levels and some more pronounced highlights from the Valerion. Skin tones are very different, which let me to ask about wether or not they are calibrated?
Yes the JVC colour is a bit better definitely the native contrast is better,,on the other hand the valarian is better on the dark details which is surprising 😮 But the price gap is not justified at all . The Valarian wins🎉
Do they all have the same source material. Streaming or direct from disc? The Valerion Max is looking like a deal even when not at half price right now. Just knowing it isn't calibrated right now and they are still working on firmware updates.
Thank you for doing this. Would have likes some variation in scene lighting vs mostly very dark. Dark scene are very valuable but also bright scenes to see how it handles those. Looks like the NZ8 was not calibrated as skin tones were far off vs reference and just a little too dark. The Pro2 looked to have oversaturated Red. Maybe calibrate them and re-run the test? Comparing to an NZ5 or NZ500 would be a closer match to what someone may make a buying decision with... NZ8 is a cool comparison, thank you.
@@drcasper 1:37 - "this isn't calibrated, straight out of the box". So are both calibrated or just the JVC? Not sure with his wording, sorry no native speaker.
@@drcasper he says 'its very well calibrated' but he didn't say and he was quoting specs but he did not say it was manually calibrated (like from a pro). JVCs are very good direct from the factory. ... an example of where the JVC looks bad and the Pro2 is far closer to Ref is at 17:35 ... look at the skin tones. JVC is far from Ref, especially when the dark scene they are walking together in the parking lot.
I think the Valerion's colours were a little off in some scenes, but overall I think I actually preferred it to the JVC. The one area that it seemed to fail was in the very bright HDR scene where the guy is looking down into the camera, with a lit sky behind him. The clouds were completely blown out on the Valerion... but is that worth paying $14k more for the JVC? I don't think so.
For me, the choice of Valerion. The color accuracy in relation to the reference was different. Sometimes Valerion was better, sometimes JVC. But the HDR brightness was much better in Valerion. Regarding black. Very high black in JVC often caused loss of detail in black. JVC often had darker black than reference. I don't know if it should be like that. However, despite the fact that in dark details Reference and JVC had similar colors (scenes on a boat in the port), the great tonal balance of colors in Valerion convinced me more.
Honestly. Black floor aside, I'd say the Valerion beats the JVC in this comparison which is insane. The highlights pop so much more. It also looks closer to the reference image and even looks better in some of the darker scenes with the JVC looking too blue.
With the context of RUclips compression etc obviously not making any comparisons perfect, honestly overall.. the Valerion is better. The JVCs strengths were obvious. Better black floor most apparent in the night sky and much better motion in panning shots. Although motion smoothing could possibly help the Valerion out a bit here the JVC was obviously better. (I'm actually curious if both projectors were outputting 24fps here?) But.. The Valerion still had good blacks especially for its price point and it's highlights were far far better. Any scenes with brighter highlights the Valerion looked closer to reference than the JVC. It's main issue comparing to reference was colour but that's something calibration or just better OTB and tone mapping could fix. Whilst the JVC obviously had better contrast it wasn't 5 times better (as the price is higher) and in many scenes appeared to be crushing and you could barely see anything whereas the Valerion held shadow detail better compared to reference. For context my thoughts are from watching this comparison on an oled. I'd honestly prefer the Valerion. It's strengths outweighed it's weakness and it was a better overall presentation and experience.
Call me crazy but on my monitor the Valerion looks better more often than not. Maybe it's the tone mapping or just the settings on my monitor but the performance of the valerion is outstanding for it's price.
@@thehookupextrasI'm not saying it's not good-you’re the expert here! However, the brighter Valerion is affecting other projector to a degree only you can truly assess in person. In my opinion, it might work better if recorded separately or perhaps with a curtain painted in Vantablack to isolate the light. Either way, it's a solid piece of work-100%!
What is your overall personal impression of this comparison? Judging from this video alone, the Valerion should be the value king of kings. It even seems to have more pop and shadow detail. The only way to truly gauge how different, though, is to see both side by side in person.
Omg!!! Pity that you never use a c1pro to test it, I'm looking at your test on one and maybe for that reason it seems that the JVC is losing? There are moments when you see nothing on JVC and quite as reference on valerian.... Looks like on ev cars....
Jesus!!! The price difference is huge and in my opinion Valerion is better than this big JVC cowI n many dark scenes, the JVC glows green. I'm watching this video on Mac 27 5K and it can't be a mistake
14:01 ok the constast in Valerion projector is better. i can't see anything in JVC. honestly the price difference is ridiculous because the image is nowhere that far apart from each other. you are paying 10x more for 1% in image quality and sometimes even the cheaper projector is better.
haha considering the price diff, youtube compression this is actually quite mindblowing. Let's throw in the size diff as well :D The darker stuff on the Pro 2 seems to be showing better, specially looking at stuff in the background in the first scenes. On many scenes the Pro 2 is very similar to the reference
I'm not going to lie, with the performance that the Valerion has, and obviously the Max is going to be even better, these little guys could just about put an end to JVC and Sony...the JVC lacked contrast when it mattered the most...I couldn't stand watching the JVC's washed out picture in the darker scenes with ZERO shadow detail. Very disappointing
The valerion is a cute toy . The jvc is a real projector The video is crushing the blacks so it makes it look like the Valerion is not too far off but that is a lie. It has measured with WAY less contrast and much higher black level than the JVC. If the video was properly exposed you would see the real difference. Dont get my wrong, the valerion is probably the best DLP right now but not even remotely close to a JVC.
It seems that a lot of money and size for what amounts to a bit more accurate/reference grade colors and black levels if you ask me. The shadow details and other stuff in dark scenes all better on the tiny cheap guy. Haha
If there's one content creator I trust to get exposure right and make sure what we're seeing is as close to what he is it's this one. But of course no comparison done over RUclips will look exactly the same as in person.
With al respect, for me the jvc is way off. It looks terrible in this video. It's way better then you show here. It looks way to dark and that's not how a nz8 looks at all
even a blind person will see the Valerion is the clear winner and oh my gush is the Pro2 version cant imagine the Max version will do against this 15,000 dollars JVC
I'm shocked, but judging by the video, Valerian has better tone mapping (closer to the reference), more details in the shadows and brighter highlights. The depth of black in JVC is certainly better, but the difference is not huge. Valerian needs to close the black bars below and above and it will be almost the same black in most scenes
This is exactly what is asked for! You're nuts! The best reviewer on RUclips as always.
I was thinking that if he would do it, it Will be the Best compare ever. Now ebook readers please :).

Why does it look like the valarion is running 24 or 30 fps vs 60 on the jvc and reference? It kind of looks like stuttering🤔

Just an average womans handbag as these take everything + one more.
At the last, Valerion is Red tinted, JVC is blue, Reference is green :D
But on the boat, the JVC was blowing the reds out as well! Both failed on low level green FOR SURE

Call me crazy but on my monitor the Valerion looks better more often than not. Maybe it's the tone mapping or just the settings on my monitor but the performance of the valerion is outstanding for it's price.
Are they recorded side by side at the same Time? Or one then other? At the same camera settings?
Side by side, as you can see from the two screens in the background.
At 4:56+ the Valerion has more details and JVC went darker and lost the image
Of course not. What nonsense
I know it's hard to change false dogma. It turns out it's possible
What exactly is the "reference"?
I'm guessing raw footage (not from a projector).
Correct, the raw video file.
LMAO! Now compare a Ford Pinto, to a Formula 1. I wanna know which one gives me more bang for my buck! 🤣
Let's throw in the size diff as well :D
The darker stuff on the Pro 2 seems to be showing better, specially looking at stuff in the background in the first scenes. On many scenes the Pro 2 is very similar to the reference
Am I the only one who might take the Valerion's less saturated images over the JVC? I'm assuming that Valerion's EBL mode is on.
I prefer the Valerion from this comparison
Video's like this are useless
❤❤❤❤even if i can't spemd 16k for jvc ,,,it just killed and crusshed valerion a billion times🎉🎉🎉🎉😅😅😅😅
So 14,000 more dollars buys... I'm not seeing the value. JVC should be at triple laser by now considering what they are charging.
Because you can't tell from a RUclips video? Don't be ridiculous, your comparing a mustang to a ferrari
@godamongmen2 Mustang Dark Horse. JVC needs to step up.
The jvc is a real projector
The video is crushing the blacks so it makes it look like the Valerion is not too far off but that is a lie. It has measured with WAY less contrast and much higher black level than the JVC. If the video was properly exposed you would see the real difference. Dont get my wrong, the valerion is probably the best DLP right now but not even remotely close to a JVC.
The image and overall viewing experience is literally all that matters. I'll take the toy if it can compete with the bohemoth
It seems that a lot of money and size for what amounts to a bit more accurate/reference grade colors and black levels if you ask me. The shadow details and other stuff in dark scenes all better on the tiny cheap guy. Haha
@@stormsjnot to mention the JVC is calibrated while the Valerion isn’t.
If there's one content creator I trust to get exposure right and make sure what we're seeing is as close to what he is it's this one. But of course no comparison done over RUclips will look exactly the same as in person.
on fast moving scenes the judder of the visionmaster pro 2 is bad
This is locked at 60p for filming. If it changes to 24p mode it creates scan lines.
Does that mean the judder is not that bad in person? I'm going to be using mine for sport so this is really important to me
@@thehookupextras but the jvc and reference don't show the bad judder you see on the visionmaster (like at 4m 19s)
@@Mike-z2y look at 4m 19s, the jvc and reference look pretty smooth on the fast camera pan, the visionmaster is very choppy
Even if I was a billionaire, I would take the Valerion over the JVC
The jvc is not worth the money
With al respect, for me the jvc is way off. It looks terrible in this video. It's way better then you show here. It looks way to dark and that's not how a nz8 looks at all
JVC is trash 🗑
even a blind person will see the Valerion is the clear winner and oh my gush is the Pro2 version cant imagine the Max version will do against this 15,000 dollars JVC
