It was actually when the western bypass was opened that this road was downgraded and the A12 diverted; this was the last bit of the Ipswich bypass to open. When the southern bypass opened (this is the one that includes the Orwell Bridge) there was a roundabout where the narrow underpass is now. You can see some of the old road markings on the old abandoned carriageway still. Before this, the A12 and A45 ran through Ipswich; the eastern bypass (now the A12) was the A1093 and the southern bypass didn't have a number; the distance signs said "(A12, A45)". There actually was another A-road that ran round the western side of Ipswich from Washbrook up through Sproughton to Needham Market; this is the road that veers off left near where the dual carriageway closes and is now mostly a B-road, and has a weight limit so I can't use it on my travels.

Another ‘gem’. As an ex Ipswich resident I used to blast my 1.2 diesel Hijet van along this very road, safer than the A14 where trucks would tailgate me in frustration assuming I was deliberately ‘cruising’ at 50 mph to slow them down. Actually I was just trying to make the jump into hyperspace. Anyhoo, my ‘gaff’ was about 1500 metres from where thee stood..keep them coming!

It is mad how it just stops. I still love driving along there. The quietest dual carriageway in the UK.

I can tell I will enjoy watching this series!
This road is er… just down the road from where my parentals have retired to… I can just imagine their faces next time I’m seeing them when I tell them that I’m popping out to see a stretch of abandoned road 😆

We usually leap frog from Claydon to the A12 via Sproughton Bramford to Capel on this section of road as it can be a faff on the A14 and Copdock interchange. It seems amazing now what with all the adjacent houses how people used to join the road. I used to drive it back when it came direct from the Post House now Holiday Inn (I think) though to Essex and beyond. Really interesting chanell incidentally, love the A1 episode.

Yes I was a local at the time. There was a service station & Mechanic on that road, couple of petrol pumps. Local place nice bloke called Cliff ran it. The reroute killed his business. Interesting note the Suffolk strangler Stephen something or other dumped a body around there in Washbrook Brook itself.

I used to live just round the corner from that section, in washbrook. The disused bit is only actually about 250yrds long, the new road goes over it as shown then they built a Tesco on the cut off bit that used to join it into Ipswich. There’s two other disused dead end sections of the single lane old a12 within a couple of miles of there.

The A12 used to run all the way to Great Yarmouth. Then they renumbered the Lowestoft-Yarmouth section as the A47 - an extension to the Norwich-Yarmouth road through Acle.

I used to travel on that road before the copdock interchange was built, we used to take our caravan up to Norfolk, at the time my dad had a Vauxhall Chevette, that poor thing would have to pull the caravan up swan hill. For years I tried to remember where that road was, until one day while out for a bike ride I ended up on that dual carriageway. Although It had been a long time there was something familiar about it, so I just had to cycle up that hill. Funny thing was, a few years ago there was a lorry fire on the A12 and traffic was diverted that way, I myself was towing a caravan, luckily it was now with a 2.0 ltr Mondeo... Great video mate.

I've been down that bit of road thousands of times. I was a bit pissed off when they changed it. It used to be a straight run, up Crane Hill out of Ipswich, and straight on without sodding about with trafficlight controlled roundabouts, and the 'Which lane do I need to be in?' dimbos who always seem to be bimbling about aimlessly there. That's progress, I tells 'ee.

There's an old section of the A350 abandoned next to where it crosses the A303, there's also a selection of abandoned roads where the A37 used to meet the A372 when the A303 Ilchester bypass was built. The abandoned junction there is probably ancient.

It doesn't get anymore interesting than this. Even a discovery of an untouched pharaohs tomb woul pale into insignificance compared to a miserable piece desolate tarmac bypassed by a new road.
Have you considered the old A130 from Wickord to Chelmsford. That is probably one of the few bypasses that was itself bypassed by a new one. Lots of small interesting( to me anyway) loops that are worthy of a look at.

Britains Abandoned Roads, or should this be titled England & Wales Abandoned Roads? Nothing or very little of Scotland, although this should be no surprise, as to research and video Scotland’s Abandoned Roads would be a lifetimes project.
Until the 1960s many of Scotlands A roads were twisty, windy, single track, or one lane either direction where 2 cars could pass but buses and trucks had crawl past each other pulling their mirrors in to pass. From the 1960s to the present (some stretches of single track A road still exist) a program of upgrading has continued. Most of these upgrades required complete realignment of the carriageway, leaving thousands of miles of former A Road as either abandoned road or road now only used as farm access.

All the traffic is on the newer road, because it’s ‘faster’, but the old road is empty.
    Zero traffic means zero delays.

    • @tkralva.6668

Having driven down it to get home, I can assure you that it is not without its delays.
Yes, that section is the same, but when you turn left, just before the road ends, I can assure you that going through the villages has its delays.
I quickly concluded that spending 10 minutes in the traffic on the A12 up to the Copdock interchange, then turning left onto the A14, was indeed quicker than taking they way you suggest.
And if there are delays on the A14, then it is still quicker to go on the A12 to Copdock and do a loop, though Ipswich or double back through Hadleigh, as I have known this route in the video to be at a stand still for about 5 miles.
So that tells you thar your assumption of no delays on this old route is misguided.
