    Terry's character changed somewhat unnaturally. When he first arrived, he was hardworking and often paid more housekeeping money because Jack kept wasting his wages. He was kind to Hilda Ogden. He was a cheeky lad who liked flirting, but wasn't nasty.

Ducking and diving ripping people off but have now reached their late fifties/ early sixties with nothing to show for it. No money. Probably don't own their own home. No works pension in place. No NI contributions so no state pension. It's laughable.

    Just my opinion, but the award for Most Unappealing Character of 1993 goes to: sullen, surly, curt and cocky Craig, boyfriend of Tracy Barlow. Even up against some pretty stiff competition like Terry Duckworth, Craig comes across as a morose psychopath-in-waiting. I'm not surprised Deirdre felt very on edge with him under her roof. Pity she didn't get the same vibes when involved with Phil Jennings, Doug Murray or Jon Lindsay.

    I do feel sorry for Ivy, but she should never have made Don stay with her. He told her he didn't love her, and that he wanted separate lives like their separate bedrooms, and she agreed to that half life, just so she could keep him. Very sad. Bert would never have treated her anywhere near this badly. Ivy's desperation to hold onto her marriage vows has been her undoing.

    • @AntoniusReginaldus
      @AntoniusReginaldus 8 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, she was one of the more pathetic characters. When she bawled in the Rovers in a drunken stupor and Don found her and took her away, I started weeping. I've always been sympathetic toward Ivy for her inability to change the way she is in her prejudiced mindset, even when she tries. And in spite of how annoying she was with her judgmental stuff. I also felt bad for her back when she got hooked on the "spirit church" (to try to get in contact with the spirit of her dead son) and apologized to the crucifix in her house, because in her mind she knew she was being blasphemous to be toying with such activity outside her Catholicism.

    • @shylinh5939
      @shylinh5939 11 месяцев назад +6

      Emily isn't particularly nice. Eileen Derbyshire really captures the kind of person who affects being a compassionate Christian who has a spirit of generosity towards others. But in reality is judgemental, 'holier than thou' and snide. She's horrible to Percy, everything he says and does irritates her, but she takes his money for the rent of a room. It's a bit like the way she disapproved of Mike Baldwin, but still worked for him. She didn't need a job, often referring to her money 'just sitting in the building society'. She could always have spent it, of course. I'm sure she thought she was a good judge of character, but she attracted a few weirdos; Arnold, the married guy and the creepy vicar.

    Well December 1993 certainly concludes a lot of storylines at once. How scary for Denise to be receiving those phone calls. I can't imagine going through something like that. Not knowing who would have it in for her. I guess it makes it worse to discover it was someone she regarded as a friend. We all know Ivy was not perfect but I have to agree with Kat Y. She didn't deserve everything Don put her through. It's almost as if he set out to cause as much hurt to her as he possibly can. Marriage vows or not, I wish Ivy and Denise had reported him to the police.
    This month also gives a stellar performance from Liz Dawn and Bill Tarmey. The heartache Terry put Jack and Vera through was dreadful. You can really feel the pain Vera feels and the anger Jack feels in that showdown scene. I have no doubt that Bill and Liz are some of the best actors in the show. Admittedly Vera's character does things at times that make her exasperating but on the whole I liked her. Same with Jack although he never went straight into shouting mode like Vera which makes him more likeable. Terry had a personality transplant between 1988 and 1992. Really becoming villainous and manipulative. Sad that the Horton's got caught up in the crossfire.
    The dreadful daughter Tracy has gone for a while (Thank Goodness). I must admit though I loved that scene with Ken and Craig discussing family. They seemed to get on incredibly well and shows that Craig is actually quite the intellectual behind that calm exterior. Sadly this was also to be Deirdre's last appearance for a while due to Anne Kirkbride being diagnosed with non hodgkin's lymphoma. Also Phyllis Pearce has to take time off due to Jill Summers being admitted to hospital. I absolutely recommend you all watching Jill's this is your life. She had an incredible life.

    Back around the time that Don convinced Ivy to set up a competition against Mike Baldwin, I found him kind of loathsome. Then I started to like him when he got sick of Ivy (for the right reasons) and was drawn to the divorced barmaid. After that I saw more and more depth to his character, and I realized how good the actor is too. Now we're seeing more of the loathsome in him again though.

    Its credit to Sarah Lancashire
    ( Raquel) that her persona, figure & attractiveness are purely the characterists of Raquel.
    Shes an accomplished actress who went on to play many different roles & even into directing, plus her real life intelligence & ambition.
    Many who stay in tv shows become sterotyped or are often afraid of leaving a long running successful drama, that they will be out of work or cant act in anything else because of stereotyping.
    Raquel was in Corrie quite a long time but was able to diversify into other roles which is a credit to her acting & her ability to see
    More to her skill in acting & gamble to venture into different roles.
    I love her " Raquel" and i also see how shes made the part, her own.
    She didnt initially start out as the ditzy, air head but was a player & was rather devious & catty when she worked at Betterbuys, in a kind of bit part
    Role.
    But since she took on Raquel the barmaid/model part, her ability to transform her persona to the
    Breathy Bimbo was very good
    I couldn't see her origional character as fitting in, the scriptwriters can pit her with
    " Tania" types or more confident
    & hard types, which lets us see the vunerable side.
    When she stood in front of the mirror in her Santas little helper outfit & cried was so poignant & sad.
    I can see how good an actress she is, every one loves Raquel
    & she made the part her own.
    Im enjoying the spats between her & the witch Tania, they are great & funny & sad.
    I've not watched tv for years now, nothing worth watching but id like to know what Sarah Lancashire has done over the last 20yrs or so, if anyone knows
    Thanks to E.H.S.
