Recently I came across a few of these good videos and I must say that the gentleman doing these videos is very meticulous about his workmanship. I am a little surprised that at 2:25, after taking the old filter out, he did not thoroughly clean the container before introducing the new filter. I know that it is not a big sin to do that, but somehow I did expect it out of this gentleman who is a high-level, skilled man. To his credit, at 2:18 he did say, " This has been changed!" Being 85 years old, I did a lot of this work, but as in my country, we cannot find replacements so easily, I had to dismantle and repair down to a lower level, even repairing control units down to transistor levels and dismantling nozzles and even wind motors in certain situations. I guess living through WW2 wherein 1950 we had to do with what we found locally, makes one a very tolerant person to the states one finds himself in. His videos showing copper pipe soldering reminds me of my early working days when we had to join lead sheathed cables where we had to wipe the soldering all throughout to make the joint completely watertight, Thank you for all these excellent videos.
As usual, quality job Steven! Loving this New England weather. Though 39 degrees today, winter is right around the corner. Hard to believe it will be 60 on Christmas. Can't believe we are still running the chillers at the hospital for air conditioning!

Hello Steven I have the same furnace. the Maintenance guy came yesterday and he said my RUUD furnace is finished, must replace with electric. he showed a photo that he took of the inside of the furnace he said it is rusting and it might cause carbon monoxide. is there is way of fixing it instead of replacing it. it is 25 years old.
What would cause a cad cell to melt? I have put 3 of them on and they continue to burn up. Not just a little discolored like the one you show in this video, but actually melt/ warp the eye. I know this is an older video. Any help would be appreciated. By the way thanks for sharing your knowledge. Been a silent watcher for a while now. Lol

Just so everyone knows. That was not a furnace cleaning. When you clean a furnace you pull the burner . Pull the flue pipes . Remove the flue box and chamber. Then brush and vacuum out the heat exchanger and chamber. What you just seen was a burner tune up. And a sloppy one at that. You didn't even clean the electrodes.

+Bo Johnson Depends on what part of Tennessee you live in, If you go into the upper or eastern part Tennessee and around the higher elevations you may see more oil furnaces there, An oil burner nozzle is not the same as a propane gas orifice it's a little larger than that, it will look similar to the ones you would find in reddy heaters

Steven, if by any chance you're reading youtube comments, I have an issue that my oil company can't figure out. New oil delivery came, did the filter and flushed the line. Bled it. It lights, but on the first start black smoke comes out of the damper. Once it gets going it's fine, but on the next relight it again pushes black smoke out the damper. It burns clean once that initial puff happens, but it smells wretched and shouldn't be happening. Any ideas?
I see that you installed a 0.65 nozzle because, as you said, it's an older furnace. I am in the process of cleaning mine, circa 1950's, and according to a previous service. A 1.00 nozzle is installed. I have yet to purchase the nozzle though. Also, should I be replacing the nozzle annually? As a homeowner I'll be doing the cleaning myself. I am just thinking that the nozzle is replaced at each cleaning because as a pro you are there and it's the best practice. Meaning, you don't know when you'll be there next. Thank you
Just the blower fan runs continually. Both oil and gas furnaces have a high and low limit temperature. The burner starts first, then the fan kicks in, then when the heat exchanger gets too hot the burner shuts down. The burner cycles on an off but the fan keeps running as long as there is a call for heat. A boiler is the same idea, circulator pump stays running and the burner cycles on an off.
I just bought my first home and I’m upgrading to a oil-fired heater. The furnace this house Is heated by propane and I hate the idea of having this highly pressurized tank of volatile gas next to my house. Heard too many horror stories about them. Is there a brand of furnace to which you reccomend?
Thanks, We do have the kerosene "space heaters" that look like little jet engines with a kerosene tank attached that guys use in their garages they have brass jets and 2 electrodes that arc across the spray pattern.
Question: Have smoke coming out of my chimney. Its a beckett oil furnace in a Mobil home. Also my fan for the force air.. turns on only for a several seconds then turns off, and continues to do this. but the burner is still on and fired up.. and the black smoke continues to come out of chimeny.. Steve, what is the electronic device called you are using to check the boiler? I’d like to purchase one myself. I have a Beckett Oil Burner, I changed the oil filter, pump fuel screen, replaced the nozzle and checked the electrodes for cracks as well as cleaned out the area surrounding where electrodes sit. (Not sure what area is called?) the nozzle that came out stated 80/85/B on the sides and the one I had on hand says 1.25/80/H. Boiler fired right up, sounded fine first 10 minutes then as I was sitting upstairs I could hear a low bass rumbling throughout the house. It was very loud. Like a huge air draft was running through the place and I felt as though pressure was building up and feared an explosion. I could smell a slight chemical burning smell, not sure if it was the Carb Cleaner I used to clean the electrodes and oil tank filter container, but I shut the boiler down and haven’t touched it since. Is the nozzle the culprit here as to the rumbling sound? Also, boiler wasn’t shutting off as it would usually heat up entire house in 10 min and shut off, the boiler stayed on 20 minutes until I shut it off at the switch.
Of course Steve know better, but i service my furnace too, and know some, i think your nozzle was wrong for sure, and maybe other things after your service...now this is 4 years after, so what happened , how did you fix it !?

What about wood burning furnace's. Here in Canada, it's all most of us got in the north. And mine has been a pain to deal with the last week.. stalling, and is really dirty.. it's the engine and fan. The people who stayed here before me haven't cleaned it.
So you don't have to cover the hole for combustion testing? When I was learning in the field the guy who taught me would cover some with foil tape, some with a "button" and high temp silicone and some he wouldn't cover at all. I never asked why. Lol. I usually put a screw in there. Or a small piece of sheet metal with a pop rivet. Is it ok to leave them open Steve? Just wondering.
+Fireship1 its always a negitive pressure on the vent . what about the draft damper its open ???? i do not thing its a big deal on this type of system . 90+yes or forsed draft yes . but something with a chimney not a big deal in my book others would disagree with me

reset the Z or drawer to the correct depth and also check nozzle spray angle. you probably may need to have the atomization angle at 45 or 60 degrees

Might be sucking a little sludge from the tank every time it starts up. Did you figure out the problem?

Robert Steich yes it should be replaced yearly as the tolerances on it are very tight and they can be clogged by a piece of debri the size of a hair.
I love the machanics on these oiled fire furnaces. I have I question to you STEVEN do you prefer working on heat pumps or electric A/C units
