Oscar BaAye and Stephen Dun: Life and Stories of the Karen People in Burma

Oscar BaAye, retired engineer and resident of Bellingham, Wash., is a member of the Karen Pwo Tribe in Burma. Stephen Dun is a Karen refugee of the Sgaw tribe from Burma and now lives in Federal Way, Wash. The two speak here at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies on April 7, 2010.
About their lecture: Over fifty years of civil war have left Burma one of the poorest countries in the world. The military dictatorship attacks its own people, killing thousands, and leaving millions displaced. The Karen people, an indigenous minority, have been struggling for independence against Burmas military dictatorship all these years. This talk will give a historical context to the situation of the Karen people and highlight the current situation.
