  • Watch in High Definition! After seeing the Grain Train in Bealville, my friend and I chased it down to Caliente to see it again. We arrived in Caliente in time to see a southbound BNSF stack train rolling to a stop to await the grain train. As the grain train passed, most of the BNSF locomotives went into auto-shutdown. Once the BNSF got the signal, the trailing GEVOs and the Dash 9 auto-started and the train highballed.
    Trains:
    Train 1: The northbound Union Pacific Grain Train. Union Pacific AC44CWCTE 5759 leads. AC44CW 7153 and AC44CWCTE 5832 trail. AC44CWCTE 5748 and AC45CCTE 7910 serve as DPU.
Train 2: The southbound BNSF Stack Train. BNSF ES44C4 7102 leads. ES44C4s 6808 and 6730 and C44-9W 5162 trail. The wind noise makes the startup a bit difficult to hear, but I decided to leave it in.
Stay tuned for more videos from my trip!

What does the flashing yellow mean?

It can mean different things for different railroads, but for Union Pacific, it is called "Advanced Approach" and the textbook definition is: "proceed prepared to pass next signal not exceeding 40 miles per hour". It typically means either that the train will encounter a stop signal two signals later or that the train will be taking the diverging route at a switch two signals later.

      I see.

@@Locomotive450An advanced diverging clear on a single aspect signal will typically just be green, not flashing yellow. Clear is clear on BNSF.
The signal on the video is displaying an advance diverging approach, meaning in two signals after a turnout, there will be a stop signal. This does not account for a turnout that merges back into a single track.
