I began modelling in the mid 80’s and Verlinden was the godfather. Goat of that era

I bought a few of his books back in the 80's & 90's - still have them. Such a talented man. Respect.

Ah yes, I remember all of Verlindens work in his books entitled The Verlinden Way. He was the "Rembrant" of military modelers and known worldwide. Also Shepard Paine was another and I met him at an IPMS modeling show in Montreal. Knowing he was going to be there I brought my copy of "Dioramas and how to build them" and he signed it !

Raised the standard and inspired lots of modellers with the work featured in the Tamiya catalogue each year.

In the '70s & early '80s i often visited his shop in my hometown Lier, Belgium... a friendly guy always happy to give advice on models, paint, weathering, dioramabuilding, etc...

As a 12 year old I once drove from Wilrijk to Lier on my bike to go visit the shop.
It was closed…. Though the dioramas in the window looked amazing.
Another time I inherited a kit from someone but it came without any instructions so I grabbed all my courage and looked up his phone number in the yellow pages to call the shop and ask if they had them.
I received the instructions in a letter a few days later. That was such a nice thing to have done.

To me the amazing thing is how good the figures are considering he was using 70's era Tamiya figs as a base.

Shepard Paine must have also inspired Mr Verlinden as he did so many of us. Francis took it to another new level thats for sure.

Verlinden and Shep Paine are the Goats of modeling! The hobby would not be where it is today without them! I still pull out my Verlinden books frequently for inspiration and some of the techniques.

Great video! Saw quite a few I did not know about. I think Tamiya military brand would not have sold as many models without him. Francois and Shep inspired all of us to build dioramas.

Verlinden was a master..In the late 80’s early 90’s I think it was he’s after market(we called it cottage industries then),that kicked some mainstream big model manufactures to up their game in model tooling and detail..
I have a good few of he’s 1/35 figures and armor conversions from over 30 yrs back..Some of the early figures of Verlinden production are still great and he’s armor conversions like for the Sherman firefly were excellent..Heard he refuses to release he’s molds to other manufacturers..Shame,as it would be wonderful to see them on the market again..But the real shame is Verlinden isn’t still about. As he’s early figures etc were/are just brilliant..

Sorry, but most of those dioramas were not done by Verlinden but by Jef Verswivel who used to work for Verlinden himself. Verlinden never gave him credit.

These WERE done by Verlinden. WELL before he set up his own company, they are from a Japanese book dated late 1970s. I actually have 4 pieces from his modern books in my collection ollection but I digress. If you reply I can send the book details, or rather pamphlet.

Looking at these mages today, with more knowledge and experience than I used to have, sorry to say, but the models here leaves a lot to be desired - unsecured stowage, visible decals, lack of dirt on wheels... Not so sure I like the bright highlights either. The compositions (very important) are however great, and the dioramas themselves are even better.
That said, Verlinden's productivity did wonders for the hobby overall, and that can't be overrated, because I think without him, the hobby would have been even smaller than it was and even is now.

I am with you on the unsecured stowage. But he was amazing 😍

he didn't fill injector pin holes either, I noticed on the range rover ambulance door, but him and Shep were under certain time deadlines to get these built and into the catalogs I guess

@@drhank2020 perhaps, but slapping some filler into the holes don't take that much time.
