Happy Birthday P. J. Proby born on November 6, 1938. He is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. Proby recorded the singles Hold Me, Somewhere, and Maria. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._J._Proby
A First Class Entertainer and a great Character both on and off stage. Appeared to never take himself or anything too seriously, which imo hid the true depth of his many talents.
Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan on guitars And the AWESOME drumming of Bobby Graham....oft credited as being the finest drummer ever to come out of Britain
Always loved this song by the great, somewhat under appreciated PJ Proby. Saw him playing Elvis in a West End musical decades ago & he was absolutely brilliant, watching this clip there are some uncanny similarities to the King’s facial expressions!
brian hall yes, it featured an unknown Tim Whitnall as young Elvis, Shakin’ Stevens as middle Elvis, and P J Proby as mature Elvis. It was a fantastic production, and the first time I’d ever seen Jim Proby or Shaky live & they both gave superb performances. The ‘young Elvis’ was also very well portrayed by Tim Whitnall.
I saw "Oh Boy", the Jack Good musical in Glasgow. They rought the PJ Proby character on and then announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, the REAL PJ Proby!" It was a great show, great surprise and a great night.
Maybe, before it is too late, P.J. will be revered as one of the most extraordinarily talented and charismatic singers of our time - despite the efforts of the 60/70's media controlled establishment to destroy him
I was born in 1970, discovered PJ in the early 90s. The local AM oldies station occasionally slips him in, but not enough. Don’t understand why he wasn’t bigger, he’s better than most of his peers.
I saw him live about 3 years ago when he was 80. He still has that charisma and star quality and his voice was exceptional. Still holding those big notes. Like Elvis, could easily have sung opera with the right training.
I know he debuted this song in 1964 but I think on this particular show it was the best effort I have heard from him ( not that any sound bad ). I just think the instruments are in better balance of each other and with his voice. Also this effort has a clearer driving rhythm. Lastly, the high harmony adds a lot in this show. The dancers in the background really demonstrates how this song can rock out. I think I have listened to this podcast a hundred times. Fantastic!!!
Brilliant a one off original that stood out from the many!! with one of the most underrated voices , but the establishment crushed him like they did , Jerry Lee Lewis including Tom Jones' management who felt threatened -, because he reportedly split his trousers on stage one time , something that would seem tame these days!!
And then there was the other 'incident' in Newcastle when he was sat in a late night drinking club with a Colt 45 on the table after someone have given him some trouble. Love the guy, met him, got the vinyls but he didn't help himself :) Character though for sure.
@@jeanscott1536 oh but he captured me on tv; the way I felt but didn't know it, at the time. I invent a memory enhancer machine, hence I'm here with clarity.
More beautiful than Richard, but his clothes would fall off. Oh do we ever need you now P J Beautiful range of voice. We need dancers like them too. Might be his sisters even
And I saw him again 5 years ago in Huddersfield during a 60's tribute evening - he outclassed everyone on stage and still has his voice into his 70's. Class act.
I agree, I was also there organising the security at the front of the stage! The performance was magnificent and if I remember correctly,he was wearing some sort of green velvet top and trousers!
Great '60s blast from the past. What got him into trouble later was his planned onstage stunt wearing tight fitting trousers of a special material - velvet , I think - that would shrink with his sweat and split to the delight of the female audience. UK's light entertainment bigwigs were less amused apparently.
It´soon 50 years ago since this song was one of my favorites. And I don´t remember that he was so cute. But I have always loved the song. Have his old singel.
