I find out Communion wine normally is like sherry, strong and sweet. Personally I instantly forget the wine taste and onl think of its significance as the blood of Christ. We haven't been able to receive for one year + due to the virus
I am enjoying this episode, thank you so much. Sorry for this book answer, but I am a winemaker and sommelier, so here's some fun facts and clarification for everyone. Sulfites are naturally occurring in fruit and vegetables. There are more sulfites in a bag of dried apricots than in a case of wine. A tiny bit of added sulfur dioxide is necessary for transportation to keep products from spoiling. They are not bad for you in the amount that we consume in all of our food on a daily basis. If sulfites are not added, they are still naturally occurring. (Also, sulfites do not give people head aches; that is solely from dehydration.) There are many other preservatives that large production wineries add to their bulk wines which are not recommended for regular consumption. Smaller producing wineries are more focused on quality than quantity, so your healthiest bet is in the wine at the smallest wineries. Also, in the US we don't add brandies or fortified wines to church wine. That is only allowed in certain countries in Europe, and in ancient times before we had technology, that was the only way to transport the wine without spoiling for those long weeks and months on a ship crossing oceans. Wine has also been used as antiseptic for thousands of years. Red wine has probiotics and antioxidants that are beneficial to our immune systems. In world war 1 and previous wars, in some cases, doctors would actually soak whole organs in bowls of wine to keep them "fresh" during surgeries. If you ever get to California, attend Mass at St Rose's in Paso Robles for good sacramental wine. Cheers to Jesus, the reason we all drink wine ;)
Woah, I listened to this as a podcast while at work today from 10-3pm. Hmmm. Interesting. I love the story of the 900$ wine!! Thanks, I laughed while at work and had people staring at me!
One of the best episodes, ever. You should do an Oceanian version of this, evaluating altar wine varieties from Down Under (Aus/NZ, Melanesia and Polynesia)!! ;) :)
You guys are so funny. Loved this episode, and interesting about the use of wine for mass that I didn't know. Were you all able to stand up after this show was over, LOL!
3 friends and a little wine...LOL love you guys. thank you for the education on Alter Wine. We have a local family that provides our wine. it is a blessing.
The Australian wine you are referring to is yellow tail, the one with the wallaby on the label. And I think the father drank buckfast which is a tonic wine . I’m a catholic from Ireland and have never drank or was even offered wine at communion
I’m a Protestant, and a church I went used wine for holy communion. One time the church secretary and her aunt went to a liquor store to buy wine for Holy Communion, and they came back with grape Mad Dog 20/20
Men... the three of you are awesome. Your show is informative, entertaining and aesthetically pleasing. Have a nice day and thank you for your work👍 Post scriptum: your camera man is awesome too :)
You guys are so funny! I only like sweet wine. I am cleaning the Church as listening to this program. One time my Priest found out that I like wine and he gave me a bottle of Altar wine for my birthday. It was a fun time around the campfire when we opened that bottle!
I’m a week late watching this! Do you have any wine left??? I’d love to buy some for my local parish and help lessen the huge deficit in your budget! Please reply to this message if you have anything left! Loved this episode and love your show! Praise God for people like you gentlemen !🕊📿💙
Our altar wine comes from the Seven Hills estate in South Australia. I have not had the Precious Blood for a while now because of Covid, but last time it tasted like a good sherry. It was available in the supermarket in Campbell ACT (Canberra) because the Bishop lived up the road and needed it for Mass.
A sommelier told me wine always has sulfites (SO2), it’s a naturally occurring byproduct of fermentation and can’t be removed. The mass production of wines introduced adding more sulfites to produce desirable traits. Fun show!
Have to say, growing up with church wine, I never understood why anyone would drink wine for pleasure. It always tasted gross. Then I tasted wine that actually was good which got me thinking, if the water Christ turned into wine at the wedding was the better wine, then shouldn’t churches be using the best wine they can for communion wine?
Very interesting topic and I got drunk just watching you guys. I hope you didn’t have headaches when you wake up in the morning. Look at you guys all laughing. I think the wine it gets into you. Lol 😂
I don't know what type of wine we had at my parish growing up, but it was the nastiest tasting thing. Though- it does mean I never fell into the alcoholic trap has I have rejected all forms of spirits (except the Unseen ones).. Now I know I like fruity white wines, and one other mixer, but I still only get maybe one/half to one glass and I'm good. Mtn Dew on the other hand-- yeah.
"They're all sweet wines. No one's listening to me." I remember Tokay in the sacristy. Was it from Hungary or not? I can't remember. I think it had a screw top...and this was 1980.
I was an altar girl in my Catholic girls high school. Never tried the wine. But our campus ministry facilitator told us we could drink it one time! We were snacking in the office/sacristy and we didn't have any water. No one did though!
When I was growing up, my paternal grandparents' church grew their own grapes and made their own wine, and they were SO proud of it. Grandma bragged about it. I can't say I liked it. First, I never experienced white wine at Mass anywhere else so I wasn't used to it (still have a bit of a red bias for sacramental wine, I have to say). But it tasted terrible! I never liked it. Maybe in the decade or so since the last time I was there (Grandma died in 2010, Papa in 2012), it has improved.
Sooo. Honestly I've always loved friar tuck. Even tho he's always drunk. I'd love it if y'all made a vid on how he's actually holy. And a good guy even tho he drinks too much ig idk :/
Christ, what do you think, I have seen you think three times and you are disappointed and sorry, why are you worried, believe in Jesus and Mercy, they love you Amen.✝️❤️🙏
Too funny! I prefer the cup to have a deep red color versus white or blush. It startled me when I first saw it at a new parish (RIP Fr. Ken). It seemed so like blood, made Christ more real and next to me.
I'm in Texas & would like to know how to get a case of Mark(?) & Amy's wine for my parish priest. His chalice was used by St. John Paul II during a Mass on one of his visits to the USA.
I miss the opportunity of receiving the blood of Christ. With Covid I don’t imagine us every sharing the chalice again. Do you think we will ever get the chance again?
Idk…I don’t even recall ever seeing the chalice being given. I started seeing it very scarcely maybe about 10 years ago. For my first communion tho, I remember Father giving me the Eucharist and the chalice. It was so special, because my other peers did not get that opportunity. Just me 🙃
I'm curious. You mentioned that the Church has a kind of wine for priests who could be struggling with alcohol addiction. What does a priest do if he has celiac disease? Or does the Church not ordain men if they know they have celiac disease and can't take any gluten at all?
If I was a priest, I would want a dry wine. Or Hungarian Bull’s Blood.😏 But seriously, most parishes I’ve been to in Denver use a white wine. My current pastor is a recovering alcoholic. I’ll have to take a look at his sacramental wine bottle. It’s described as grape juice. It tends to stain the cruet after awhile.
Is the blood of Christ a white wine? I wine tested port at Grahams in Porto Portugal and the conesuer told me that when I asked if port wine was approved by the Catholic Church. He said yes, but only white port.
@@ryandellacrosse6416 That’s great! The Moser Lumber Company is an icon of my hometown, Naperville, and the Mosers an outstanding Catholic family. I didn’t know them personally , as I was young, but I believe Harold Moser was a patient of my father, Jim Dunphy. God bless Ryan. Terrific episode! Funny and , as always, spiritually edifying
I had done a Google search, and ascertained the spelling is "Haut Sauterne." The name is French, and should be pronounced "o sotern" (more or less, no "u"-glide for the "o" in either case).
excited for this episode! please brothers and sisters, pray for my mother Patricia shes battling cancer and the chemotherapy effects are getting tougher, keep her in your prayers please, I will pray for you guys as well, thank you, God bless you.

Good morning from the Philippines. Your episode on the sacramental wine is timely because today is Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.

What a beautiful idea to get a bottle of wine the year your child is born and enjoying it later with them!
That's excellent idea
Thanks!

Great video guys. Didn’t know that about my parish wine! Thanks for sharing.
Hahahaha I had to rewind twice 🤣 thanks for the giggles 😆
One of the favorites of Filipino priests here is Mompo, made in Spain. The color is similar to St. Michael's Blush, and it's pretty sweet.
This was fun. Thanks guys. 😂❤
Yall should make a t-shirt with just the words "Hot Pope Wine". I would buy it 😂
Thank you 😊 i really enjoying the information. May God bless you all of you. 😇
Best talk show ever
Love this show❤
From what I remember, it says "contains sulfates" because there are some in grapes naturally, so they aren´t nesecearily added

A priest friend of mine used Wild Irish Rose.
Father Rich to Ryan D: "You've changed..."

Would love to know where to purchase. I’m not crazy about real sweet wines but prefer a red vs white.
I agree Rob, funniest so far! $900!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
