I lost my 12.5 year old girl to this disease almost 4 years ago. Diagnosed in January during surgery for GDV (bloat). Caught the bloat right away so they were able to save her life, but saw hemangiosarcoma on her liver. If she didn't bloat, we never would have known she had this cancer. Surgeon recommended I put her on turkey tail mushroom and Yunnan Baiyao, she lived another 7 months comfortably and happy. It eventually spread to her lungs and we helped her cross rainbow bridge.

I'm late getting to this video I know. My wife and I had put our 12 year old Newfie to sleep last week because of this terrible disease. The vet agreed with our decision completely since Newfies are bad surgical candidates as it is. Rodolfo, you absolutely made the right choice. Even with surgery, you may get 6 months if you're lucky, most of that time being spent with the dog recovering and not being themselves. This video I feel is very dangerous.

Lost my silver brindle pug a week before she turned 11 when she collapsed without warning or prior symptom - her rupture was massive and she was gone before she hit the ground. I did cpr for a long time before seeing in her eyes with soul shattering heartbreak she was gone. This was 4/25/23, two weeks ago though it seems like yesterday. The week and a half I had nothing to go on added guilt, frustration, failure and more to my grief, making it worse. Starting with her white tongue I researched though, and when Liz our vet confirmed hemangiosarcoma I already had deduced the same. I’m grateful she didn’t experience any pain, she “turned off” like a tv being unplugged when she stood up from peeing, Liz deducing that the slight pressure everyone exerts internally while peeing was enough to burst the fast growing large and malignant tumor. Wednesday had just been to the vet a few months ago with clear health. It only nominally alleviates my guilt over the failed cpr, but I still am sickened by my sweet girl dying so suddenly and tragically with her life being cut short undeservedly. More people need to be made aware, I certainly didn’t know about this disease before last week, and surprised it’s not something vets commonly educate about given it’s prevalence.

Josh, we are so sorry for your loss. We are continually surprised how few people know that cancer is the number one killer of dogs, and our mission is to help raise awareness and give timely information to those who need it most. Hemangiosarcoma in the internal organs can definitely mount a totally silent war on a dog's health, with the first and final symptom being what you experienced. It's very hard on us dog lovers, for sure -- and your girl was so lucky to have such a loving and knowledgeable dad.

@@DogCancer thank you, it’s been a very crushing blow and the entire ordeal has left me staggered. Pugsley, her brother from the same litter, is equally lost without his ear licking partner in crime, and now we two boys are slowly and gently learning life without our bossy alpha girl to keep us in line. She was my shadow, the owner of the real estate called my lap, the one to greet me vocally when I came home, and my source of comfort by her ever steady and much loved presence. She was my once in a lifetime dog, not that I love Pugsley any less but she and I had a unique and deep bond I’ve only shared with her, so this disease, this monster, has left me more hurt than when my dad died. Pugsley has experienced physical symptoms of grief - his immune system dropped and he developed an infection so he is now on meds, and we didn’t get to experience celebrate their 11th birthday as planned last Friday (5/5/23). It robbed us of a lot, and left me with trauma from that horrible morning. I keep thinking back - what did I miss that I might’ve prevented this? She was always with me, and the pugs are my babies now that my kids are gone and have families of their own. I didn’t notice appetite changes, energy changes, panting, disorientation, gum/tongue discoloration, diarrhea/stool changes, anything. Yet Pugsley I noticed the depression, restlessness, decreased water intake quickly and got him in, so what did I miss with Wednesday who was glued to me and not at all shy of letting me know what she wanted/needed? Intellectually I *know* I did everything right and couldn’t have caught this, but also intellectually it still doesn’t make sense for my otherwise healthy, active, normal acting dog to literally just drop dead in front of me when she stood up from peeing in the back yard. This disease robs us of the psychological processes evolution has developed to assist with grief from the bonds of love and protection - regardless of how brief an illness or accident or injury is, there is still that second of understanding what is happening or about to happen to help the emotional and psychological grieving process. Without having the cues of anything wrong, even now that I *know*, I’m struggling with my grief because again, that traumatic moment was simply my beloved and healthy girl dropping dead for no reason. It’s horrible given how prevalent this is, how many stories I’ve read and watched of nearly identical circumstances of a beloved pet dropping dead in front of their owner while being let out to potty, and yet for so many of us furparents to be left in the dark. I want to let as many people know as possible. One way is a ribbon tattoo on my forearm to get people’s attention and make them ask. Is hemangiosarcoma a red ribbon?

We lost our 10 year old Maltese to this last week. He had bloating in late July so we took him in and they found a Mass, had his spleen removed. He went on Chemo for a couple months and was doing great. Super active, jumping around etc.. Then one night he lost all control of his back legs took him in and they said he had internal bleeding which is common at the end, put him down the next day. So sad, such a horrible cancer.

My Dog was fine yesterday, running, playing, happy and by last night he collapsed . I revived him as he was passing away and ended up being put down at the emergency vet at 2:30 am from internal bleeding, this morning I am in mourning and shocked that this happened so suddenly - he was a 10 lb Chihuahua 13 years old but with the physical fitness of a 3 year old. Even his new vet (not last nights) was shocked he was 13.She said he is doing so good she could see him easily living to 17, and then this happened

@@DogCancer Thank you so much. I'm still in shock and wish there was a sooner way to know your dog has this but apparently, even if they find it, there is nothing they can really do except prolong their life for a short period of time with chemo and surgery. I think that would be worse.

I also lost my 13 year old pit bull to this horrific cancer 3 months ago. Mine wasn't a candidate for the expensive surgery either but even with surgery, I've read, prognosis is poor for dogs and they go through too much. I'm hearing more and more of pit bulls getting this, they need to be included in the susceptible breeds for this ugly cancer.

Have you thought about a steroid injection and tablets for your dog, it may make him feel more comfortable in his last days and increase his appetite? My heart goes out to you, this is such a very sad time. Just make him as comfortable as you can and give him lots of love. Pale gums can be a sign he is deteriorating. God bless.
