  • This is the first in a series of instructional videos designed to provide the clawhammer banjo student with a window into the wonderful playing of Walt Koken. More information on Walt can be found at www.mudthumper.com. My intent is not to provide a note for note run through of Walt's arrangements, but to outline basic Kokenisms that one can employ in their own arrangements.
The opening tune is called "Banjonique" by Walt Koken. I play only the A and B parts due to time constraints. Special thanks to Walt Koken who gave me permission to attempt this project. I highly recommend all of Walt's recordings!!
Sound was recorded using a MOTU Traveler and a Josephson C42 mic. I used Logic to capture and master the audio.

I think this is an excellent video to watch to understand how Walt Koken approaches the instrument. I've played Walt's music to lots of people and many of them ask if it's more than one person playing. This video explains what's going on. Great job!

Nicely done video. Thanks for figuring these licks out and sharing. I can't wait to try these out and to see your other videos!

    Thanks for the note!
The banjo I'm playing is an Ome Columbine with an 11" silverspun tone ring I picked up second hand. It's not the Ome standard Columbine though. I think that it was a custom job as it has a flush-fit resonator and backstrapping on the neck. It plays even better than it sounds if you can believe it.
It's setup with a Snuffy Smith frosted head, medium Moon bridge and bronze Bill Keith strings.
    Cheers!
    Tom

Your description of Koken's "ringing style" makes me remember a description of drum playing in the novel "THE TIN DRUM"--not just "how to do it" but what it's saying.

Well done. It's great to hear detail on Walt's playing. On his CD with Claire Milliner (sp?) the banjo is really hard to dig out of the mix. It sounds great, but it's hard to figure out. I'd enjoy hearing how Walt gets the drive so strong in the A part of Cookhouse Joe. I play all the notes, but they lack that fluid punch. Also, what's he doing in the B part? I just can't hear it. It works so well with the fiddle.
Walt's got to have the driest sounding banjo on the planet!

Very nice. Subscribed now. But this was 2009. Where are the other parts that were coming? It has been four years.

We could really do with some tab on the screen. Certainly to demonstrate the first part with with "alternative pull-offs" and "regular pull offs" .i.e. the essence of the style!

Hey Tom, nice videos. What tuning are you in? I'm trying to figure out Walt's version of Train on the Island, and was wondering if you're going to do any more Kokenology videos... Thanks for pitying these together!

Sorry Tom. I've searched high and low and unfortunately my ear isn't good enough to pick up tunings on the spot. Could you post the tuning for this song? I thought it was double C but it doesn't sound the same when I do it. Thanks! EDIT: Wait. Is it just open G? EDIT EDIT: Yes it appears to be so. :)

Hi Tom In your first Kokenoloy 101 you tube video, you said you were going to do a series on Koken's techniques--did that happen and how do I access them more directly. I am also interested ion making progress up the neck--where do I start with you instructional videos?

Hey Roy, I ended up abandoning the "Kokenology" series. I'm planning on returning to it eventually, along with up-the-neck tutorials. The majority of my material is tied into the Banjo Quest project on Patreon. It's also a wonderful community of banjo players around the world who help each other. You can get more info at www.patreon.com/tomcollins . Best! Tom

Thanks for doing this as I also believe Walt is the finest clawhammer player out there. Maybe I missed it but what's your tuning here?

      Hi David,
Perhaps I'll return to Kokenology in the future, but for free lessons they take a lot of time for me to produce due to the complexities of Walt's playing!
We'll be getting into some pretty gnarly stuff that borrows a lot from Walt's approach in my new "Banjo Blitz" lesson series that I release weekly:
      ruclips.net/video/_J7Pktq-HSQ/видео.html
      Hope you check it out!
      Best,
      Tom
