Great video, I should pick a couple pieces and focus on them and not feel like a failure if I can't get through it in a single evening... I'm very much a newbie.

Hi! I am a piano performance major at a university. I am not good at sight reading yet and am very overwhelmed with my workload. I do not have any choice in this matter, my professor assigns me several pieces, and then I have to do TONS of accompaniment. I have a binder about 400 pages thick with music I have played for accompaniment this year, In addition to the 4 solo repetoire pieces. I have been struggling to keep my head above the water and am wondering how I should handle the pressure so I can learn my pieces in time to pass my juries? If I wasn't bad at sight reading it wouldn't be such a big deal, but I really have to learn all of the accompaniment pieces. I'm a freshman, how can I balance these things?

Having 40 pieces on the work-bench should not be totally wrong.
Sight reading is one of the most giving disciplines and can lead to larger repertoire and better technique.
There are different levels of sight reading; the problem is that you do not want stumble over too big a challenge. The mechanical/physical ability will not improve by exclusive sight reading, but then again, sometimes you actually get a new and better touch.
One must know the different types of touch (Josh has excellent videos on how to practice fx. block-chords lifting the whole hand.)
