In 1970, Milton Friedman urged business leaders to prioritize shareholder value when making business decisions. Businesses have turned away from this model of late, and are instead actively pursuing social and political goals. Is it good for society when businesses promote political causes and take social stances? Is it good for business? What are the costs when corporate managers focus exclusively on maximizing profit?
The MIT Sloan Adam Smith Society chapter hosted a virtual debate between Roivant founder and chairman Vivek Ramaswamy and Chicago Booth Professor Luigi Zingales on the topic: “Is ‘Woke Capitalism’ a Threat to Democracy?” The discussion focused on the potential benefits and the realistic downsides of moving away from shareholder primacy.

Just finished Woke INC. Excellent book. Very well written, Vivek is one sharp cookie. Highly recommend this read. Explains a lot of what is going on in the world today.
Vivek Rasmawany is extremely well spoken, and absolutely right in his analysis here imho.
Luigi’s pretty smart too, no doubt:)
Agree
1. 50%+ of people (think Gallup but might be Pew) want the US to break up
2. CEO of Coinbase refused to get involved in politics and got slammed by CEOs of silicon valley for saying "I want to stay out of politics"
3. All major companies have embraced wokeness to varying forms
Woke Corporates are clearly a threat to free speech - given they have one view of the world, and therefore by extension democracy
Excellent Q&A on the impact of woke capitalism.
The fact that corporations can impose Wokeness is WHY great concentrations of corporate power are evil.
Vivek is self made and think s by himself and for himself...where as the other chap is made....made by managed money. ..he s paid and sponsored ...to think and say whats he s told.....Professor s are a dime a dozen. I look forward to the death of the sponsored expert class...thank for you contribution to this healthy phenomenon Prof. Can you imagine spending most of your life to become an expert. Only to realise nobody cares about your expertise. Or your credibility.
I dont care what you think you know...until i know care. How many professor s and experts can understand this basic principle.
Any individual who supports Woke is a useful idiot. Its a scam.
Bravo Vivek. Well done.

It is always interesting to move ahead listening to great minds irrespective of fields which they specialize,
Vivek claims we are not a democray but a constitutional repbulic, yet incessantly uses the term democracy in his speech here-can you clarify that?
without 2 amendment
Both of those guys are great minds of our time.
The Final Score...Ramaswamy 1 Zingales 0. The Final Score!
If i had a penny for every time he said "threat of democracy" id be rich
He says threat TO democracy! Get your hearing aid on!
I looked at the companies his Strive 500 fund invests in and Coke, Disney, Blackrock (to name a few) were there. Those companies are some of the most woke out there. Why would his fund invest in them?
Because his asset management firm is doing what other asset managers are SUPPOSED to be doing. Prioritizing shareholder returns over the implementation of social values. Of course he's going to have to invest in "woke" companies in order to accomplish the end goal of pursuing shareholders' interests.
so u want him to be broke , so he can not do anything either ?
this way he can milk the dragon then become powerful enough to slay the dragon
Nobody with a name like Ramaswamy, will NOT win any state in the primaries and so no chance at all.
Yet a guy with the name Barack Hussein Obama did. Go figure.
Barack Hussein Obama "TWICE "
