This brings me very golden memories. My aunt used to have one of the these, but it was green. I was told that she got it as a wedding gift in the 70's. I was in daycare in my aunts home and it was late 80's. I clearly remember this vacuum. Back then they had replaced the hose with the Electrolux hose, wand and nozzle. What I remember that vacuum was still in use in the early 90's. So it lived whole 80's and more. What a golden memories.

My parents got a General Electric barrel vacuum in 1985 as a wedding present. It was a peanut butter sort of colour, had the same hose coupler at the machine end, as did a lot of machines in that era, National/Panasonic, Sanyo etc. Id love to find one, it blew up in 97/98. I recall Mum saying it was 12 years old when it died so that puts it around 97/98.
Also, regarding the two holes in the coupler, my grandparents had a red National Panasonic barrel vac from the mid late 70s, and it had a remote switch on the hose handle and two electrical pins at the machine coupling. Thats what those mouldings will be for. The switch on the machine had two positions, on and auto. Auto allowed control via the hose and On was just an override.

Love these Japanese canister cleaners from the 1970's!!! So quiet and powerful and lightweight!!! I think the electrical outlet near the hose port is meant for a more deluxe electrified hose with a convenient power switch on the handle....compact powered floor nozzles only started showing up in Japan in the 1990's...which were meant to help clean tatame mats. Enjoy that Hitachi!!!!

Thats exactly what it would be for. Some National Panasonic machines of the same era had a little red toggle on the handle and they had that same hose coupler.

I've got 2 of these, one in Orange one in green. They were relatively common here in New Zealand :) I also have the later version that has the cord rewind. The two little holes by the hose were for models with a remote power switch, & for those asking the air exhaust is around the outside just below the rubberised bumper bar. I'm pretty sure these didn't ever have bags, just the simple filter, national/panasonic did similar bangles models (that even automatically cleaned the filter each time you pulled out the power cable) lol

Very nice find! These are difficult to find in good shape, because it's bagless and I think people used these much longer than bagged vacuums (like vacuuming cars)

Hitachi did some lovely uprights in the late 80s which I think were clean fan with on board tools. Made Hoover cleaners seem old fashioned at the time.

The holes are because of the on/off switch on the handle. Some models also National vacuums (in japan) they have had on/off switch on the handle.

OMG, i need exactly one of these for my car😃 because we have Vorwerk folletto, and it is really difficult to vacuum the car with an upright vacuum... even with the accessories. You must always disconnect the handle and the power cord, which is not recommended.

CV 160...looks like the result of taking design cues from a Rainbow D4, a Numatic Henry and Hoover. The wind down is like a Rainbow, fairly long

I know that this is completely unrelated to a dyson but I have a Hoover constellation 454 and the cord frayed right where it comes out of the vacuum the wires are fine so I popped out the plastic clip that holds the cord in place in the vacuum housing and now I cannot get it back in any suggestions on what to do would be greatly appreciated

Hitachi is almost a shell of its former self... not quite a shadow lol. They lease the brand out to third parties of varying quality... the home electronics are OK to shoddy... The name Hitachi is stuck on stuff you could probably pick up for less cash elsewhere.
