- The NBA is changing things up for this coming season. Flopping will be punished more severely but the In-Season Tournament is what people are really heated about. This is a look at the Tournament including the jersey change.
If there was a second tournament in the NBA, it should be for the 10 worst teams battling for a better draft spot
Yeah I'd be cool with that.
That would be sweet.
People have been saying this for years but what people do talk about is do you think anybody wants 2 play for their replacement
I feel the reason nobody cares for this is because it’s just Nba teams vs other Nba teams, unlike in football you have tournaments like the champions league but the reason half the world cares about them is because well one football is by far the biggest sport but also it’s clubs from the best leagues from different countries going up against each other, you got the best clubs from the Premier League from England, you got the top clubs from Liga Santander from Spain, top Clubs from Serie A from Italy, top clubs from Ligue 1 from France and the top clubs in the Budesliga from Germany, and other top clubs from leagues as well, that’s why so many people care about the champions league and if the Nba want to do the sam they need to make this in season tournament against the top teams from the top leagues across the world like the champions league is!
@RomanIsRandombot
The NBA should really consider doing a Champions League type of tournament where NBA teams play vs European elite teams. The audiences and fans in Europe are insane and the level of play is really competitive. That would help the expansion of the markets for the NBA.
Facts. They used to do exhibition regular season NBA games in London, the market is there. But they need a Euro team in the mix to shake things up.
Now this is a good idea. Europe is seriously underrated.
That’s what they should do for the in season tournament
The time difference would be problematic. If Europeans were to see those matches in USA those matches would have to be very early, like 2 or 3 pm.
It will get there! 20 years ago the rest of the world was so far behind but the game has gotten really popular and more competitive
As an English guy who loves football and basketball I love your take on getting international sides into the in-season tournament. Great history on FA Cup too! Love from Britain
Thanks Daniel!! Would have been great to see Luka and Real Madrid a few years ago!
@@Grievous_this is more akin to a domestic cup like the FA Cup or Copa Del Rey but I get your point. The whole point of knockout style in-season cups in football is the variety of teams that get to play, when it's just the same NBA teams facing the same other NBA teams it feels no different than the regular season top record
@@noname-hf9ty If it was like the FA Cup the NCAA Teams,G League Teams ,Semi Pro Leagues etc would be able to compete.
@@GroverJ83 my point exactly, what's so fun about NBA teams vs NBA teams when that's what the season already is anyways
The only reason viewship is down for the NBA is because the majority of the games are on cable and network app in which you have to pay to watch games. In the 90's we could watch basketball on normal broadcast TV like NBC and ABC. And as a Laker fan growing up they had game on the local affiliate stations. But the NBA and it's owners got greedy. I can "guarantee (Charles Barkley Voice) that if they moved more regular seasons games to network channels the viewship would go up.
For real. I don’t get to see many laker games for that reason, I can only imagine what it’s like for the hornets
Yeah, my suns are finally getting away from the Bally sports model and will put their games on locally again. I agree
This is true and constantly selling viewership rights to different apps, making the company's compete but it leaves fans with a choice "a new subscription and fee , or simply don't watch "Even in the playoffs, some platforms didn't have the games even when it's your local team on certain days...the money and greed trying to force people to pay for multiple providers and even the players today are paid to the point that they are fragile, can buy anything they want and there is no more satisfaction, they seem miserable and unmotivated because they played to get paid, and got it, rather than playing to be the best and prove to themselves they can always get better or reach for the stars ,while getting paid to do it.
The reason ABC and others broadcasted in the past is because it would get high viewership. They stopped broadcasting due to low viewership in comparison to Kardashians etc.
As someone who enjoys Football (Soccer as you lot call it) and Basketball, I'd say the NBA regular season never really mattered to me till the playoffs began, this can be another way for good NBA players to win stuff and not just go out sad in the playoffs. Football has so much variety the relegation system means no one loses games on purpose, which is a weird concept to me when I started following the NBA consistently
Well you do realize your system is weird to us right?
@@imtoxiq_ Yeah I get it, it's a culture shock on both sides
If American pro sports implemented relegation, it'd be an absolute game changer and be very good for the sport. The NFL is plagued with teams that are consistently garbage and don't ever have to face the consequences of relegation.
Jesus loves you and may God bless you..
@@Jesussaves852 God bless you too brother🙂
In Europe these quick midseason tournaments generate great expectations.
I like the idea of another tournament for teams out of playoff, playing for a better position for lottery picks. Far better than tanking.
Im actually excited about this tournament, shake up the regular season a little bit, but I am curios to see how scheduling goes once the knockout round starts since they supposed to be regular season games
Jesus loves you and may God bless you......
Yes
I agree.
It would be more meaningful if they have the tournament every 2 years or something
They only schedule 80 games and then the final 2 games are scheduled based on who advances
I'm all down for this change. As a new viewer from the bay area that had surface level knowledge about the NBA prior to this season starting, this looks exciting. I'm more curious as to how it'll play out rather than being skeptical about it, as I can agree with some people that the regular season doesn't feel as memorable right now even though there are a few moments I can recall.
Should’ve grouped them by division so divisions actually mean something again
Yes
That’s a good idea, maybe they change it up.
This is a better idea..
@@kingedwardiii1465 R.i.p pacific division members
BTW Love the G-league and International ,NBA cup idea.
I would be a fan of relegation. I think that would change EVERYTHING. I think it would even help with "Post-Contract Slumps"
Thank u for explaining this truly cause not many people were fond of this
But it goes to show how much the players didn’t take the regular season seriously anymore
And why , cause of load management and etc
But thankfully it’s only a in season tournament and at least playoffs are still going To be intact
That sucks, coz individual awards are won in the regular season, which build individual legacies. Rings are not enough, get some individual hardware too
I feel like a lot of the reason why basketball viewership is down compared to NFL is that the NFL has games on public TV and the NBA is exclusive on cable.
I like this. It’s during the toughest part of the season to get through. So it gives players motivation until the All Star break. Plus a bonus 500k for the winner? That’s great incentive for them to play hard. NBA is smart to be trying new things. An in season tournament could also attract more eyes who will want to tune in for the Playoffs.
Gotta say I dont know much about European soccer or soccer in general or even the FA Cup, which with Casey explaining it is the first time I ever got into the details of Soccer.
I actually believe the in-season tourny will encourage younger players and teams to play harder. Similar to the Bubble. A lot of the NBA don't make Lebron, Ja Morant, and other stars money so that extra $500,000 would help them A LOT. I'm excited for this
ja morant 😂😂
@Gio-wn3yn That shit had me mad confused too😂🤣
I was like really out of all the people he could have named?
@@cristianjurado5796 ja Morant is one of most popular and highest paid young players whether you like it or not.

that is only really a meaningful sum to players currently on the minimum salary, so like... 10 players LOL
The only rlly problem I have with the in season tournament is that if good player from a contender gets hurt that ruins their chances at a chip
But it counts towards the regular season so it’s no different to any other game
The league shouldn't reward poor performance. Many teams are one or two pieces away from a solid team. They should reward the top draft picks to those teams that may have just missed the playoffs. Make the bottom tier teams fight to drastically put a better unit together instead of tanking their season. That would make things more competitive.
but that would mean 7th and 8th seeds would tank for a top pick, you can't win.
No that’s a terrible idea and complete nonsense
@@Jyxrri don't think you can tank 7th or 8th if everyone is trying to get those spots
So trash franchises with no free agency appeal, can literally go back to hiring plumbers?
That's a stupid idea, and you're a stupid person for suggesting it.
Next time you feel like you have something clever to share, just don't.
@@alfredocaceres4680 they are?
They should have games on local stations like they did back in the 90s and early 2000s. Would definitely help with ratings and viewership.
If they made it an international club tournament that would get a lot of interest. Bring in the winning teams from all the leagues around the world and play them against the NBA teams.
Love your analysis and passionate commentary
Yeah I Tweeted them this idea of motivating teams during the regular season with an inside tournament of sorts. I also told them to have homestands to remove a lot of travel fatigue and they started doing that last year. Funny how that works.
This is somewhat similar to the WNBA's Commissioner's Cup, and honestly, I didn't hate that format there (regular season games counting towards Cup play where top record in each conference meets in the Final at the midway point of the season). I think having 3 groups per conference to actually manage it and having designated Cup days are a big improvement vs. the WNBA's Commissioner's Cup. I'm actually more optimistic about it knowing the full format.
What is wnba?
@@droidgracie4121 it's the woman's league. Try googling...I thought this channel was hooping fans
I agree I don't hate the commissioner's cup in the W. This will be good for the NBA. It's great that they are trying something new, gotta keep trying new things.
@@marvelousjewelz The WNBA's Commissioner's Cup imo doesn't go far enough, it doesn't feel special. I feel like this NBA Cup can
@@marvelousjewelz oh, it’s the women’s league. Well, real hoops fan don’t waste their time on a league that nobody watches.
Can't say I ever thought I'd see Ronnie Radford's goal for Hereford feature in one of Casey's videos!
Nicely researched piece on the FA Cup..... Americans talking about English football can easily go badly, you did good :)
Haha!! I can’t say I would have predicted that either 😊
I don't like automatic play-off spots but more cap to a team is awesome. I don't like the automatic play-off spot because would just rest their best players more if got an automatic spot
Let em. Their ratings will go to shit and the best players will be terrible when playoffs start
I say just create a point system like hockey and soccer do. Give a point for regular season wins. Give the tournament winner 3 points or something. It's a nice start to the season standings without giving them too much. I think a division tournament near the end of the season like college basketball for a few more points to the standings would be cool too.
Why people ignoring the fact that the nba rating has gone down because it’s almost dam near impossible to watch now. Back then you could easily turn on the Tv and watch it but now you have to do a whole scavenger hunt to see what network is playing the game with a expensive cost
The cup is great idea and it is trying to emulate the format of European team sports. I believe that it can really work but the NBA needs to make one single change. They need to reduce the season games down to around 60 games like its a lockout season. That way Playoff seeding becomes a lot more competitive and the stakes in the Play in are amped up. Fewer games also means that Cup games matter more making the trophy actually worth something. The Cup final should be just before the Playoffs start in order to generate hype as an end of season finale
European leagues work because you have multiple professional leagues within country and continent.
@@KeeshanCook-qm8mjba needs to start playing against other leagues. Can set up a whole tournament just off that alone like uefa champions league. They need to expand internationally to make things even more competitive
@rustyray420 I get it but Champions League is effective because you have a lot of good leagues in Europe. Over all I'd say the Premier League is the best but Seria A Ligue 1 Bundesliga LA Liga even Erdivise can hang. I guess over the years other leagues could catch up to the NBA
I personally lost some interest because the game turned into a 3pt contest, flopping, diva stars abusing not playing due to the smallest reason, lack of defense and 'frail' big men. I miss the 90's to early 2000's stars 😢
Love the content brotha 🙏🏽
This channel has so much more depth than most nba related channels on YT
Love the content as always.
@RomanIsRandomwhy did u write in Thai
We should have the all star teams versus international all star teams too that would be fire
Winner of in season tournament should get automatic 1 seed, now watching teams playing at their highest level in november and december will bring in a ton of viewers
If it was a automatic playoff spot if you win that would be so unfair and horrible, I’m glad they didn’t do that. Pretty excited about this tournament!
as an european, and a football fan (soccer), this makes perfect sense. every single league also has a "cup" knockout style tournament.
Great video. Football ⚽️ tournaments work because there’s teams from different divisions or different countries, so it’s not just the same teams over and over again. NBA needs to adopt this model
I love the idea of having more teams in the cup maybe add college teams too?
Hell, have the wnba teams compete as well. Maybe that'll finally shut their traps.😂
@@mikol.69420 yea 😂
I don’t think any of it is possible
I still don't like this or even the play in. I am in favor of shortening the season to 58 games (everyone plays eachother twice, once at home, once away) but why not still have the season be the same length time wise and just have the games more spread out? Then there would be more hype for games because teams would only play 2-3 times a week and players woud get hurt less and subsequently wanna rest less because the schedule isn't as crazy. This simple change takes away the need for the in season tourney and the play in as well as anti resting rules like the minimum game requirement.
In the danish cup back in the 80s skagen who already was a crazy story that they went to the finals went up against the biggest team in denmark brøndby. They actually won and none of the skagen players could celebraty their historical victory because they needed to go back to their jobs
Flopping has been a problem for decades and these "rules" do not eradicate them. Remember when the NBA implemented the no call on players who like to bait fouls?
Yep, that did not last long.
Imagine if players had a sliding base salary adjusted for talent and then the rest of the money was literally distributed to teams after wins. Imagine if every game felt like the in season tournament. Also tourney for draft picks with bottom teams. Competition not load management and falling asleep until April.
Man I can't believe even the playoffs didn't get in last years top 100 watched events. Wow! Something has got to change.
Another really good video production and it was very informative. Thank you man!
Relegation is a nice idea just like football/soccer. But the big problem is that the mechanics of the NBA draft would also change.
Exactly. Relegation in the big soccer league is built into the sport. There's no let up either, you finish in the bottom 3 of the leagueyou just dropped down to? Well down you go again.
There's no draft, no high school or college level equivalent. Trading doesn't work the same, players are bought and sold like real estate or cars.
Salary Cap Exception as a reward is huge.
The in season tournament sounds like a waste of time. What would work much better is a draft lottery tournament where the bottom 8 teams get put into the lottery, and they have to play each other in double elimination to move up in draft order. The lottery determines pick order but also your bracket placement. So if you fall all the way to 8, you play the team with the number one pick, and can steal it by winning, but then have to beat the winner of 4vs5 then 3vs6 or 2vs7. If 1 loses to 8 they get the 8th pick but then they have to play the loser of 4vs5 to get the 4th or 5th pick if they win, or be stuck with pick 8. This would force teams to stop tanking and actually compete.
Can u pls do a video on pascal siakium and where he will be going like some possiblitys I saw are the pacers and the hawks ❤ your videos are always so amazing keep up the good work ❤
The tournament finals should've been way later in the season. Early Decemeber for a final is wayyyyy to early.
Neutral Final Stadium-W
1 game Elim-W
Conference restricted groups-L
2 games a week-L (should be 1/more spread out)
4 game group stage-N
Only NBA teams-L
Main problem for me is the scheduling. You can't have a final 25% into the season. Putting the quarters and semis before all star break and the final after it (or all knockout phase after all star break) would build up way more anticipation and allow for way more advertising to the more casual fan
The tournament is actually a great idea. It gives early regular season games MEANING. They have to play those games anyway!!! And the cup looks nice too!
Bro, I love the breakdown!! Thanks for the update… also, this makes me pumped up to start next season!
There should be a tournament the worst teams playing for the draft picks!!! Let’s get this started
I picture it being like a tournament of all star games where no ones cares and load management takes over
Flop rule and 65 game award minimum is a cool change
If they want better viewership. Maybe change the game times to at least become watchable elsewhere. I usually watch the games that are live between 8;30PM and 1AM but most games are around 3AM and 6AM my time.. which is hard to keep up with
My list of problems with the NBA:
Regular season is too long.
Trade deadline is too deep into the season.
Teams are tanking so bad it’s ridiculous.
Players are becoming cap space holders.
Flopping on offense and defense.
Strengthening the screening for referees.
Implementing more challenges.
Increased salary incentives for player loyalty.
Implement a hard salary cap.
Decrease the amount of playoff games.
Salary cap exception is a good idea.
I'm not sure this tournament is going to get the players to show up and try
And if the players were showing up and trying, the regular season might attract more fans.
Maybe the problem is that the arena is always full and the players are probably not going over the tv numbers so it's like,
Arena's full, what's the problem?
And the contracts are just getting weird, one team mate making 10x another...
Shorten the regular season to 70 games. Add more teams in the playoff, first 4 seed go directly, play in from 5-12 position, the rest goes to g-league, first pick to top 5 team, you can pay whatever you want player you drafted and invested to be superstar without interfering salary cap. Rules for winning mvp,ROY are ok. You incentivate teams to try to win not to tank or lose purposely.
My suggestion is that the winner or winners (1st and second?) of the mid season tournament are guaranteed homecourt advantage for all first playoff games or something simillar. So essentially they steal a homecourt game from their opposing team post season. The stakes are too low for the winners and i think this is high enough incentive for competitive play that would even carry over to the post season
Edit: i type this before finishing the video, i like AM's suggestion way better
Edit edit, i guess am suggest my suggestion too 😂 ripperínos
As a basketball fan, i really don't like this in season tournament idea, also about baseball Bath Ruth Statistically speaking is the greatest player no more
The only reason NBA viewership is “down” is because everybody just watches games on illegal streaming sites. I would honestly bet that viewership is at an all time high right now, but the NBA doesn’t receive anything from it because they make the games too hard to watch
How would relegation work for team/arena employees? For example, the people checking tickets at the door or the folks working in the accounting department.
People don't watch because it's not on regular broadcast TV like NFL.
I’ve been saying for years. If you’re picking top 5 in the draft for more than 4 years in a row, your pick is turned into the 15th pick. If it’s multiple teams, 15/16/17 etc. enough of teams trying to suck
even baseball made a ton of changes this year - adding pitch clocks (which have shortened games by 30 mins on avg) bigger bases for more steals, and banning defensive shifts to increase hits
the thing I don't like about the new tournament is that it just rewards stacked teams. Like even if bad teams who usually tank played their best, they're most likely not gonna win a big prize and will most likely be effort for nothing.
Now if we could just get them to change some of the rules or enforce them. Get rid of gather step, call actual travels containing anywhere from 4-15 steps (looking at all those post players with their wandering pivot foot dancing), call carrying again, let teams play defense at all I would be like the games more. The problem is that it is too offense centric now. It is actually boring and makes it harder to compare eras. Scoring is so ridiculous now that all-time great scorers would be average scorers now and all time great defenders would probably not even have jobs.
the problem with sports today, besides the lack of any real talent and the lack of player commitment, is the fact that players know that no matter what they do, they are entitled to a miliion dollar deal, so in short, plauyers are too highly paid and not enough dedication is given to the actual game to entertain fans, who then have to pay exorbitant stadium fees to see games, to watch lack luster playing. thats the real problem. cap salaries. all sports.
Lowkey imagine a NBA Cup draft pick. If you win the tournament you get the 31st pick between the 1st and 2nd round. How many story lines could that create
I'm a die hard basketball fan and I have given up on the NBA regular season games. Not because of load management and tanking but because it is just boring. Too many games, too many time outs (the TV time outs are RIDICULOUS!). The rhythm of the game is all chopped up.
This is for the start of season. The nba does not get TV until Christmas and people dont really fully watch until All star time. This is to try hook folks into the start of season and the teams to try and win and get money
Most of the reason is OVER PRICING when most of the Top Players either Load Managed or legitimately injured.
The NBA should add one draft pick to each round....Winner of the tourney should receive the 13th overall pick in the following draft. Winner up the 43rd overall pick. If those teams wish to not utilize the pick then they can receive a trade/ cap exception worth that draft picks contract. I feel like this would make the tournament worth it for organizations.
"Look at this girl hold the cup" bro "this girl" is Kelsey Plum, show some reapect 😂
They need to change the flopping. If a player (LeBron) sits on the floor faking injury causes to delay the game, should have to sit out for a period of time. 5 minutes of game time. Flopping should lead to fines and like technical fouls kicked out of the game and suspended 1 game.
"They get half a million bucks which is a huge deal to 90 percent of NBA players"
Hard to tell if you were joking, being sarcastic or serious with this statement. The star players aren't gonna care about this tournament. To a rookie or end of bench player, the money is a huge deal but to star players that are already making 40m per season? 500K is just pocket change to theme? The NBA also added cash incentives to the All Star Game and players still didn’t try.
As a Guy from Europe , the idea with the International Tournament sounds like a dream.
I would love to see a tournament, where NBA, G-League, Euroleague, Australian League and maybe Chineas League Teams are playing against.
I know that sometimes NBA Teams are playing against International Teams as a friendship/scrimmage Game to test the Team Chemestry which I alwas likes to see.
(I think in 2022 the Suns lost against an Australoan Team in the offseason but i am not vers sure about it)
The Relegation System like it is in Football sounda fantastic, but I dont get how it would work because the NBA (with the G-League) is a closed Sports League where the G-League teams were owned by the NBA Teams and also shared together, only the Mexican and Ignite Team are for their own.
As an example:
Golden State would be the last team in the West
And the Santa Cruz Warriors would not go up to the NBA in which League would they go?
Because when I would have 2 Teams plaing in the same league, i would say, that the worse/not that popular team need to lose the Games, that the better Team is getting the Wins.
Those jerseys look like something you would find in the kids clothing section in Target.
I still can’t understand how “an extra draft pick” would motivate players to play harder and want to win an in season cup.
Cool so they can either draft my replacement or trade that pick to replace me?
It could be because no one has cable any more.i try to watch an occasional game but I'm not paying to stream through a cable app. The cup sounds really lame though.
People also hated the play in tournament. Now nobody cares or remembers they hated on it.
That's what i've been thinking, they should include G-league teams in the in-season tournament if they're really inspired by soccer, it bounds to give surprise and also exposure, granted it's not becoming top priority (other than the champions league cup)
I'd say viewership is down due to how the networks operate. Their were fewer ways to watch the NBA back in the day than it is today.
Refs need to be held to a higher standard and actually call fouls regardless of how big the player is who is being fouled. If I get hacked every time going to the r8m and no foul is called what you think is going to happen.
It's all cause and effect.
Can you think about an invite of the top 8 Euroleague teams to that end tournament? That would spice things up... Sadly this would only work if the NBA would change to the FIBA rules... no def 3 sec, touching the ball while over the rim, different traveling rules aso aso... sadly that will never happen.
If you flop a certain amount of times in the regular season, let’s say 3, that player must wear a jersey with “flopper” written on it for the remainder of the season and through the playoffs. Humiliating
And how many minutes do they have to play in those 65 games? This doesn't seem like a real deterrent.
That tax exception would have been a legit reward
Now hear me about what about a Continental Cup top 16 in NBA, top 4 in France, top 4 in Spain top 4 in China and 4 teams from another country. Groups of 4-->Last 16-->quaterfinal-->Semifinal-->Final. best of 7 from Last 16-->Semifinal and 1 game in the final
Make the all-star game cool again. It could be like a pick-up game, where players show off cool moves and don't go too hard, but it should not look like a lay-up line.
Load management ruined the nba. I remember when It2 was traded to the cavs. When the cavs squared off against the celtics. Guess who sat out? Yep, IT2 did not even lace up versus his former team. That game had drama, storyline, and intrigue and the fans never got to see it.
I would love the in season tournament if there were high stakes involved like a salary cap exception, or an amnesty clause, but without these stakes it just feels like extra work for these players
Some people just hate things because things are new. No other reason.
Participation trophies sounds like college football with all those bowl games that mean nothing but bragging rights!
Here’s a weird idea, why not have the cup be with different leagues from different countries like for example from France, Australia, China, etc. and have each league be represented by their 1st placed teams and same goes for the nba. How this benefits the nba is that represents the nba in the cup the amount of games they would be miss would automatically be counted as a win since they entered a cup. For me this would allow teams to care about winning and allow those players to stop sitting out games
Honestly, lower the season to like 72 games, take out the mid season tournaments. Requires players to still play 65 games to qualify for awards, and fix officiating. I stopped watching because of officiating and the review rules make no sense. And most importantly, games are just players pulling 3s. High scoring games doesn’t make me excited.
The idea is interesting but I am not sure if I will like it. It would be more interesting, when the teams would play random to each other in every round, like in German DFB Cup. Take the 2 best teams from G-League and you have 32 teams. Let them play in elimination game and after every round let the chance decide who plays against each other. 32 -> 16 -> 8 -> 4 -> Finals. The tournament in groups like A, B and C is kinda boring for me.
I’m from Brazil, I love the NBA and football (soccer). I’m looking forward to this cup, this can really be something big if they put those playoffs or draft extra things.
Love your content, thanks for doing.
You are Brazilian but have an Argentina profile pic lol
I’m excited to see if crucial role players will be drawn to teams that will win the cup
They should have just given the winner of the slam dunk contest a MILLION DOLLARS and let the fans judge after a replay in slow mo.
They should’ve been serious about getting rid of flopping and cleaning up the reffing.
The NBA wants the league to be entertainment like the WWF but the fans want it to be a real sport.
Look at the VSL. Now teams aren't even playing their top draft picks more than 2 games! Ridiculous! You think they are gonna risk an injury that can deeail their whole season for some tournament that doesn't even matter?
Tournament for the picks, the in-season tourney with lots of teams around the world. PLEASE NBA
