Air filter? Fuel pump? Rust? Scratches on interior? Button wear? Torn seats? Wreck damage? Could you even BE more non-Mustang specific? These are things any casual buyer looks for in ANY car!

Marty Baker no I'm just saying that the 05-09 mustangs are known for the torn leather which could happen to most cars. But it's also known HIGHLY for the door panels on the sides that tear off because of heat. This particular generation of Mustang is also a total pain to swap out spark plugs in. There are some shops that won't even change the plugs because there is such a long process in doing it.

The main thing to look for on 05-07 Mustangs is water entering the cabin. The passenger kick panel hides the smart junction box computer. It's right below a common water entry point and not something that should ever get wet-expensive repair. Ford released a TSB on the leaking issues, but never did a recall, so owners are on their own. Also, the outside door handles stick open.

radsdad1 this issue is caused by clogged vent drains. Pull the plastic “screens” off under the wipers and use a flatblade screw driver to push debris out toward the bottom of the car and remove the rubber boots in the bottom.

I have owned my 2005 Mustang 4.0 since it was only 4 years old with 36,000 miles. It now has 170,000 miles. The only time it ever left me stranded was when the plastic thermostat housing cracked at 165,000 miles this year(Only $25). The CD player did go bad and wouldn't eject the CD. As preventive maintenance I replaced the motor mounts, transmission mount, all 4 brake pads, all 4 wheel bearings, all 4 shocks, coolant, transmission fluid, rear diff fluid, spark plug wires. I have always had to trickle gas into it, since I bought it.

Having had 2 for these, i think you have missed a major area to look at. It is a known issue with water leaking from the lower front windshield area and below on the passenger side. Bad sealing by the factory. When the leak occurs it hits the ECU, causing corrosion and possible shorting. Both of mine, 2005 and 2006 had this issue. Check the carpet right below the passenger kick panel for evidence of water leaking in. I fixed both.

So basically what you look for in any car ..not to be a negative guy but this was not specific so much to the mustang...I had never heard of paint bubbling though...what I would be MORE concerned about is anyone who put a HURST sticker on the dash ... ugg...besides tacky, it means they were most likely the type to beat the snot out of it.
I have an 08 GT/CS so spared me the plug issue (they switched in Dec. 2007) - My car is pristine at 67K miles - and I am a firm believer in FIX it before its bad so I did the VCT solenoids ,Plugs, Coils, Trannie fluid, differential fluid and since I did the VCT's and had the valve covers off, I painted them ford blue and added the 4.6L emblems. My point is every car with 120K plus miles will not be perfect unless you are like me and cared for it...which is rare.

I'm thinking about buying one of these cars but the more I research the more nervous I get. So far I've read about:
      1. Electrical issues(corroded computers, alternators)
      2. Water leaking through the dash
      3. Gas gauge that doesn't always work(stepper motors, fuel sending unit)
      4. Door panels are glued on and will almost certainly fall off

Alternator and front hub bearings are common. If cam phaser is going with close to 170000 miles might as well do a top end rebuild. Not hard to do but a good mech can help. Breaks need upgraded they get soft when driving hard or long period of time.

This is what Ford says about the bubbling Aluminum.
According to the TSB, “Some vehicles may exhibit a bubbling or blistering under the paint on
aluminum body parts. This is due to iron contamination of the aluminum panel. . . . Ford’s
Scientific Research Laboratory has performed a number of tests on vehicle body parts returned
for corrosion related concerns. Testing has revealed that the aluminum corrosion was caused
by iron particles working their way into the aluminum body part, prior to it being painted.”
CAS Executive Director Clarence Ditlow said:
“This is a very expensive defect to remedy. The TSB requires “extreme care to be taken”
including special tools and segregated work areas to remove the corrosion by blasting,
repriming and repainting. This repair is so difficult that CAS recommends the best fix is to
replace the corroded part with a primed steel part and paint it. Ford cannot guarantee this repair
will eliminate all the iron corrosion or prevent other areas from bubbling or blistering in the
future. I had mine fixed and 2 years later it showed up exactly in the same spot and the same pattern.

That's a fair amount of miles and it still looks good . I have a 05 , but it only has 26000 miles so I'm not a good judge of what will happen on one with 130000. miles . The hoods have paint problems because it's aluminum and wasn't treated correctly before paint ,mine had a couple of places five years ago , easily fixed . The leather door insert comes off on them all , replaced mine with kit from Predator Mustang inc. , Spark plugs need to be cleaned about every 10000 miles to keep the carbon down on the part below the threads so they will always be easy to remove . Rubber pinion snubbers will need replacing on rear-end housing , they deteriorate easily, on lowered cars cause a rattle noise . The e brake cable needs to be oiled , sticks easily. It's a great car , but like any other it needs regular maintenance .

I bought an 06 V6 Premium Trim convertible with very low mileage, a true 1 little old lady driven car, and have 2 of the problems here (knock wood). The hood on these Mustangs is aluminum and apparently it is not painted and/even primed correctly from the factory. Mine has a few small " divets " in the leading edge of the hood as well as bubbling on the underside of the hood.
The other problem? I have the Shaker 500 factory stereo and one of the buttons is missing, not quite sure what it controls as I rarely use a radio in my cars anymore. According to one used auto parts yard, there are nearly a dozen different radio/stereo systems used in these cars (not sure I believe that) and consequently they won't sell my a radio for this car, even though I explained that I just want 1 button, unless I have the numbers off the back of my current radio.
As near as I can tell (and I check reasonably often), no water intrusion, but I try to be scrupulous about keeping the cowl area clear of debris.

Clusters might go bad on the 05s, Check the radiator cap, Cam Phasers, always change batteries on older cars, check spark plugs (theyre a bitch to remove and they might break which sucks ass), fuel pump, oil filter gaskets leaks. I got the 05 GT with 133k miles and I have to fix something almost every week, but its always fun to fix up old cars.

Hey, I know this video is like five years old and it doesn't really matter because the answer to this question won't really mean much, but I figured I'd ask as long as I'm here even though I'm not really expecting an answer. There's a bit in the video that mentioned getting the rear quarter panel replaced, and I wanted to ask how much it costed to have that done. I'm currently trying to find what will become my first project car. I want it to be an S197, and I have my eyes on a 2006 4.0 automatic convertible w/ 80k miles for $5000 at a rebuild yard. The damage is relatively minimal, except the left rear quarter is totally smashed. A new quarter is like $200 at a parts pull lot, but actually getting it installed is the hard part and it's something that is supposedly really difficult to do so it's recommended to have a shop do it. Mustang forum posts from a decade ago say it'll cost like $2k-5k to get that quarter cut out and a new one welded in, but all of the body shops near me refuse to give a quote on a car that I don't actually own yet so at this point it'd basically be me buying a $5000 car and hoping it'll be less than $2000 to fix because at that point why not just buy one that's $7000, doesn't need fixed, and doesn't have a rebuilt title.

I figured it would be identical to the '07, but two things I discovered immediately, which was a little disappointing: The '05 does not have a TPSM system. Also, it does not have an external audio port in the arm rest storage, but you can buy a kit to add one. My '05 DOES have the same issues with the leather door panel peeling, and the four-gauge setup where two of the gauges seem to have a mind of their own. Good to know that can be replaced for not too much money.

Well with regard to this video when I purchased by 2007 in 2014 there was bubbling as mentioned but in was on the underside of the hood. The fix was easy which was to sand off the bubbling then spray some etch primer on the area and brush on touch up paint. As for the interior yes the dash and door parts are somewhat cheap but you have to remember the basic concept of the Ford Mustang was to produce a reasonably cheap sport's muscle car in 1964 that everyone could afford, that thinking as remained constant. Having said this there are many interior aftermarket parts available. For example I have carbon fiber overlay on my dash and have changed out the Shaker stereo to a Kenwood Bluetooth. As for dirt on the rear panels at the wheels mudflaps take care a lot of dirt the sprays up from the road. Great American Muscle Car considering it's original concept.

A different way to look at a practially undriven 06 loaded GT/auto with 3000 miles garaged on it. Impulse buy then shortly after a injury led to the car being garaged and driven just enough to keep the juices flowing. 1/ The bat unless put on a trickle charger WILL die in 2-3 days. Official response from Ford's elec eng "Drive it more". 2/ Placed in PARK, it will need rattled to go into park.3/ At 6 yrs the side panel material peeled off. Local pro said he had done over 100 Stangs and replaced the foam, reglued the orig mint material for $225.4/ The pass door autolocks and after enough times of yanking up on it thinking it is unlocked many stay partially open. It is more of a eyesore but I aint taking the door apart to fix it.5/ Airbag recalls. Dropped by 2 dealers 3x and they were either to busy or out of the parts. Numerous phone tags with maint and After 10 yrs, screw it. Stock Pzeros were replaced after 10 yrs because of age. Looked brand new again with 3 grand on them. That said, replaced them with identical ones and it was night and day. The "old tires were hard and brittle where as the new made the car feel 100x better. Don;t stretch out even great looking, low mile tires. So yeah if you rarely if ever drive it you should not have to many problems. Lastly and as we all know. 1/4 tank = EMPTY so fill it up and ignore the computer.

It is painful to watch this video. My 2007 Mustang GT Premium is in so much better condition. He has a valid point with the spark plugs. They are a two piece design that can crack in half when you remove them. I just had aftermarket spark plugs installed after I bought mine with 37,000 miles on it. I wanted to avoid any problems and there weren't any broken plugs when mine were changed at that mileage. I have a red and black interior with a redfire exterior and I have had no problems with any paint bubbling on the inside or outside of my aluminum hood or trunk lid. His car seems to have been abused over the years.

Here are the real issues now. Stock struts wear fast, swaybar or rather anti-swaybar endlinks wear fast, V6 doesn't even come with a rear swaybar, but one can be bolted on. I had vent actuators die, I had most of the engine peripherals replaced, pvc valve, egr valve, throttle body encoder, thermal valve for the coolant leaked, AC compressor makes noise like you are supercharged (but works fine). Powertain bearings make noise like you are on nitrous-oxide around 2k to 2.2k RPM. Rear bearings die every 30k, diff gears wear fast. Stock handling of the vehicle is terrible, I had to place front and rear tower braces, two cross braces, and weld subframe connectors. Oh and calipers can seize, caliper alignment pins are easily broken. Had a K-member replaced, the stock had too much flex. Stock control arms wear fast. Power steering pump wears causing vibration in the steering wheel. There's more I just can't remember now. Yeah, engine mounts wear fast, and the mount brackets are idiotically placed. The trans mount cannot be removed without removing the exhaust or angle grinding some of the exhaust supports. Electronics on this car are terrible, I've gone through 3 alternators, the current higher current one seems to work with the inverter unit from the stock one. I would also suggest swapping the driveshaft for the aluminum one. All in all, minus the interior and the body, my car is 20% left original Mustang (the engine mostly, oh the timing chain tensioners wear and break easily), everything else is swapped. I would also suggest a watts link, or at least an adjustable panhard. After years of work I can finally say this car is a sports car, it used to be just a Mustang.

My main problem on my 07 is I go through thermostat Housings like crazy! Probably one a year but the lifetime warranty I got from advanced auto let’s me do free exchanges for new...idk what the issue is though.

scott kesterson yeah man. I’ve had my 07 for 7 years this June. I’ve gone through maybe 5-6 of em. The plastic the housing is made of...cracks and is a design flaw for all s197s I was told. I recommend getting lifetime warranties with any you buy. I’ve only had to pay for one with the warranty

Henry Gonzalez off topic though but are you into car audio for your 07? Was just curious if you are because I was going to see if you had a custom subwoofer box built or just bought a random pre-fab? The trunk is so small you can’t get hardly any sub boxes to fit properly

Take out the drainage nipples under the windshield wiper cowls. They clog with debris, just take them out. Upper window rubbers (between the roof and top of door windows will leak. Cheap fix, pain in the a$$. Thermostat housings, being plastic pieces glued together start leaking. I think there is an aftermarket aluminum one to be had out there...Can't say if it's any good. But plastic ones will probably need replacing multiple times if you keep it long enough. No big deal.SNOW TIRES (Firestone Winterforce) or you will not enjoy snow much at all.
The Biggest thing to look out for is the timing chain tensioner "cassettes". Around 140,000 is when they like to break. NOT a fun job. I sold mine do to that issue. Other than that fun reliable car that is plenty fast.

Brake and gas pedal are too close to each other. Not safe to drive the way the pedals are designed and engineered. I have a pretty grabber orange 08 with black interior but I don't trust this car. It's a great running car but try smashing into somebody at an intersection when your gas is on the floor and you are standing on the brake or seeing your tires smoking when you are at an intersection with cars in front of you. I'm a great driver and always was so know it's not my driving. Had a 65 Austin Healey that was fast but the car never got away from me or got me hurt. I love the grabber orange convertible but I would think hard before I bought another Mustang. Ford may not care about my life with all that safety belt jive but I do. It's not that appealing an idea to have your car revving at top speed and having a shot gun go off in my face when it smashes into some family in the car in front of me. Glad I have the v-6 and not the 5.0 or you would not be reading this.
