Please note: My comments on objective lens size and FOV characteristics were misunderstood. A larger lens size does not guarantee a larger FOV, it is just one part of the entire optical system that dictates a riflescope's performance. Whether it's to gather more light, retain resolution at high magnification, reduce parallax, etc it is hard to compare between scopes. I was trying to make the point that there are some compromises you have to make in the MK4 lineup, which still holds true. Most high magnification scopes use a 56mm objective lens, and only the highest magnification model in the MK4 lineup offers that.
I also forgot to mention the MK4 also can parallax down to 20yd, which is great for rimfire, and the MK5 cannot.

I love my MK4! I have the same 4.5-18x with the pr2 mil. Im very impressed so far! Also with the Leupold VIP discount it brings the scope down to $1079!!! Such a deal!

@ryanshotwell5580 it's their discount they offer for active duty, veterans, etc. It's all on leupolds website. They offer it to a bunch of other people as well, like LEO/Retired, first responders, firearms instructors, different stores employees. It's pretty cool and most of the time people don't know their qualified for it.

Great review. Thinking of buying this for hunting, the 6-24.

Good review gave lot of information to digest.Even there are uses for the 4 you make a great upsell to the 5 which I looked at also but like you said there are comprises which make a big difference. But I have uses for the 4 also Thanks for being honest and thinking thru all points!!

Josh from the Pursuit of Accuracy channel just did a video on the MK4 with the illuminated reticle, and it highlighted a function I didn't even know was an option on Leupold scopes. The illuminated reticle has an option to flash when it's not level. A built in "send it" level if you will. How are more manufacturers not doing these and why don't more people talk about it?

I had the same thoughts after watching video. Like it seems like there should be some kind of catch.

One important item is the parallax ranges of the MK4 and MK5. Minimum on the MK5 is 100 yds and on the MK4 is 25 yds. I use my 5-25 MK5 for centerfire and I’m very happy with the 6-24 MK4 for rimfire with its 25 yd minimum parallax setting.

That's a great point, very important to me as well but I just forgot to mention it. Had to make this video quick in one shot before sending the scope back out

Parallax on the MK5 is 50 yards, not 100.

Another point to add is the Mark 4 DOES NOT come with the sunshade, and in Canada it is nearly impossible to find at a dealer.

Field of view is not related to the objective size. Bigger collects more light which helps at haigher magnification where the image will get dark.
Have a look at the Kahles 328 with a 50 objetive, it has the largest field of view in the business with a large margin.
Great review, but careful with the assumptions on technical stuff.

That was an assumption I made just from my own experiences using scopes with larger objective lens sizes. Thanks, I pinned a comment explaining the error. That's why I rarely call my videos "reviews", it's just my opinions on the item at hand

@@Womfat Thanks for your answer and an exellent presentation of the new series. The relationship of objective size to FOV all else being equal is actually smaller FOV with increase in objective size. They eyepiece is the opposite as you can observe on all large FOV scopes, the eyepiece is disproportionaltely large. FOV is a very complex topic, but here is a simplified quote from Ilya who sums it up nicely. I presume he is ok with being quoted.
”Generally, it is easier to get wide FOV while maintaining good image quality in a compact device with a smaller objective. IF you want wide FOV with a large objective either some internal complexity has to be added or the device gets bigger. These general considerations apply to binoculars, spotters and riflescopes.”

Hi new to PRS here and building a rifle rn. Can’t decide on a scope in the $3,500 and down range. Out of all the scopes you’ve used which on would you pick if you could only have one.

I have a mark 4 8-32x56. It has 24 MRAD. After zeroing at 100 yards. I have 17.4 MRAD left. Which by my app is good for 1250 yards approx.

For a combo hunting and range rifle in .300wm, do you like this better or the vortex razor hd lht 4.5-22x50? Very similar price point. Thank you!!

I got to look at the mk5 and mk4 side by side at the IPRF worlds. Imho the mk4 is a way better deal. Glass is better for the money and a more common 34mm vs 35mm tube. The mk5 achilles heel is glass quality. Probably the worst in the 2.5k range

      They are MDT.
I would look at Area419. Moving to those on all my competition as well as hunting rifles. Until now, I have mostly had Spuhr.
