  • The Odd Fellows, also known as The Three Link Fraternity, is one of the oldest and largest non-political and non-sectarian fraternal and service-oriented organization in the world. It was established because the world was very different back then. The things we take for granted now were almost non-existent like healthcare, orphanages, educational systems, care for the elderly and for the impoverished. Even though we have come a long way now, more needs to be done to see that everyone everywhere is treated with care, kindness, and dignity. Working together to achieve these goals and help our fellow men creates a bond that cannot be described. A brotherhood and sisterhood of benevolence that can only be felt as an active participant. Working together, we really can make a difference!
    There are many theories about how it first started and got its name but the generally accepted belief is that it emerged in England when a group of working class men who fell outside the established system of trade guilds banded together to form their own labor association. At the time of industrialization in England, 'Fellows' from various 'Odd' trades gathered together and formed a fraternity to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state, trade unions and National Health Insurance. They would work together to help each other and the unfortunate families back on their feet, whether it was rebuilding a barn that had burned, or putting in a new crop after a devastating season. Such helpers came to be known as "odd fellows," so named by the general population who thought they were "an odd bunch of fellows" who would behave in such a selfless and seemingly impractical fashion. This group then adopted the name.
    By year 1700's, there were a number of Odd Fellows organization in England. In 1810, various Odd Fellows lodges of the London Union Order in Manchester organized an "Independent Order of Oddfellows" with the title "Manchester Unity". With their improved system they were able to persuade other Odd Fellow Lodges to join their unity. They also chartered the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in America years after.
    While several Odd Fellow lodges had existed in New York City before, because of the charter relationship, American Odd Fellowship (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) is regarded as being founded in Baltimore, Maryland at the Seven Stars Tavern on April 26, 1819, by Thomas Wildey and some associates who were members of the fraternity in England.
    On September 20, 1851, I.O.O.F became the first fraternity to accept both men and women when it formed the Daughters of Rebekah. Brother Schuyler Colfax, (Vice President of the US from 1869-1873), was the force behind the movement.
    During the 'Golden Age of fraternalism', the Odd Fellows was the largest fraternal and service organization in the world. The world Almanac showed that it had over 3.4 Million active members in 1915. Although non-political and non-sectarian, it also claimed many notable members which included six U.S. Presidents such as Franklin Roosevelt and Warren Harding, as well as many Senators, Governors and community leaders. Lucy Hobbs Taylor, the first female American Dentist, was also identified as member.
    It continues to exist up until today with about 10, 000 lodges in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Belize, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Philippines, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Internationally, it is involved in various charitable causes such as their Educational Foundation which gives scholarships annually, Arthritis Foundation, Visual Eye Research Foundation at Wilmer Eye Institute, Living Legacy program which planted more than 8 Million trees already, the United Nations Pilgrimage of the Youth which sponsors High School students on a one-week trip to the United Nations, the S.O.S. Children's Village which houses orphans and aids victims in Cambodia, etc.

    Hello all, I am a Master Mason in the state of Tennessee, and very pleased with the wonderful things I hear about the IOOF. We have an Odd Fellows lodge here in my town. It is very small, and thinking of joining one day soon. I am originally from Indiana, and I know the IOOF are as popular up there as the masonic fraternity, because many of the older buildings that are either businesses now or libraries, are still, or once were Odd Fellows halls, as many have either the IOOF letters or the three linked chain on them. Great work you all do!

    I am very conflicted about potentially joining. My mom, dad and grandpa have all been part of Odd Fellows, with my dad being a patriarch for a couple of years now. They are so secretive about what is actually going on during the ceremonies, and it both terrifies me and makes me curious. I have once been in the local Odd Fellows building here and even though I was like 6 or 7 now over 20 years ago, I can remember some details that nowadays makes me think of the Dan Brown novels haha. A "starry night sky" (an impressive pattern of stars in the big ceremony hall) for example.

    Just visited a historic sight in Vermont where I climbed a very large obelisk monument marking a battle that is known to be a turning point in the Revolutionary War. The structure is the tallest in VT. At the top inside, and on opposite walls are large stones with one honoring Freemasons and the opposing honoring the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. I asked a guide about the Odd fellows on the elevator down and he mentioned that they were considered "odd" because wealthy folk being forwardly charitable was pretty odd.

    • @matthewg9638
      @matthewg9638 9 лет назад +2

      +HE HATE ME From reading various well-researched books and plenty of online articles written by people knowledgeable about the Odd Fellows, I feel confident in saying that your guide was wrong. They were never known for their wealth, it's not that kind of group and it never was. The "Odd" part of the group's name goes back centuries, I've read about a charter for an Odd Fellows lodge in London, circa 1730. There are several theories about how the moniker got started. The one that I most find convincing is that in pre-Industrial Revolution England craftsmen who weren't guildsmen pooled their resources to compete economically and to generally help each other out. It's easy to imagine this motley collection of guys with different trade skills, living far enough away from economic centers, needing to band together. Etymologically the word "odd" stems from an Old Norse word. Like the "odd man out" is the extra guy that can't find a team, I think so were the original Odd Fellows.
      An even better question for the tour guide would have been to ask why fraternal orders like the Odd Fellows and Freemasons were so into cornerstones and monuments.

      Matthew G huh? thanks a lot man!

    • @IOOF1819
      @IOOF1819  9 лет назад +1

      +Matthew G That's one theory. The most acceptable is that the Odd Fellows evolved from the "craft guilds" in England as there were so many groups like Foresters, Masons, FreeGardeners, etc. All seem to have evolved from the craft guilds. The Odd Fellows seems to be that group composed of people from odd trades or those journeymen associations.

    During the California Gold rush the Odd Fellows were very popular among the Prospectors. Because most of the Gold seekers had left their families in other States to seek their fortunes in the California Gold fields, they joined the Odd Fellows to gain allies if the going got tough, and to get a descent Christian burial if they were to die. Almost all of the old mining towns in the American West had an Odd Fellows Lodge at one time or another. At one time I was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge number 440. And yes, it was a "secret organization", but no, we were not trying to take over the world.

    What were the "Odd Trades" or smaller trades that original members did that they formed this organization? Curious does anyone know?

    • @miketruby5983
      @miketruby5983 6 лет назад +1

      from what I could find, those trades would basically be ones that were not represented by either the merchant guild or craft guilds.
      Bailiffs, Reeve's, Hayward or HedgeWarder's, Chamberlains, Chaplains, clerks, cottagers or general laborers, ditch diggers, Cottars, herbalists, Minstrels, Harkers or messengers, and the guys who picked up and buried the dead. Not saying Oddfellows were all that but that is what I could see as being odd or of lesser trades during the middle ages. If any Oddfellow historians would like to interject on those findings feel free to correct me it would be greatly appreciated.

      in Los Angeles from the 1890's to the 1920's there was a lot of grocery store owners and fruit peddlers from Italy and Sicily that were Odd Fellows members and two of these families actually went to war with each other over territory in 1906 with three murders taking place. the fruit peddlers war ended by 1907 and erupted again in 1915 and ran to 1919 with six deaths. The first murder in 1906 had that funeral at the Boyle Heights Odd Fellows cemetery.

    • @Mollari42
      @Mollari42 7 лет назад +6

      Not really too bothered whether they say they are or not, if it looks like a *duck*, walks like a *duck* and quacks like a *duck*, then it's a *duck*.
      And freemasonry is wicked. Sure anyone bellow the 33rd degree aren't _knowledgeable_ enough to know the wickedness from the inside because they only know of the _good_ that it does. But the pure wickedness that it does and has done makes any positive effect pale in comparison, and of course those masons will defend it with utter sincerity, because they are ignorant of it's evil. I wouldn't say those specific masons (below the 33rd degree) are necessarily evil, just mislead (the 33rd degree certainly are evil). But anyone willing to do the research ought to know that. it's basically the illuminati.

    • @Harlemworldboy
      @Harlemworldboy 7 лет назад +1

      Carl Andrew so the 33° of the Scottish Rite is the highest degree in Freemasonry? If you believe that then it's apparent your misguided concerning Freemasonry. Also if you equate the so called "illuminati" with Freemasonry your also misguided. Please give proof of your outlandish claims. I would love to be entertained.

    • @Mollari42
      @Mollari42 7 лет назад +2

      I can appreciate you wanting me to 'back up my claims' and if I had aimed them at you, you would have a right to. But since I wasn't really aiming my comment at you (and I mean that sincerely, I wasn't trying to trigger you, I aimed it at Mafau Mulipola), I don't feel particularly obliged to. Sufficed to say I have my own proof. Besides which I thought I made it clear that anyone who isn't a 33rd degree wouldn't know the truth and would sincerely think they would have to (as well as think they could) debunk me at every turn. And so, since it is pretty much certain a 33rd degree mason wouldn't be wasting his time in here, why would I want to have a discussion with a mason here?
      So I'm not really into having any discussion, and if you want to take that as a victory, fine. Actually I've moved on from that sort of discussion. You might question why, if I've moved on, am I here - fair question. I saw an OddFellow _lodge_ in Leicester and had never heard of it, so was curious as it sounded pretty masonic to me, I then felt so vindicated about my assumption by the video, I was moved to make a couple of posts for the benefit of any uninformed.
      Anyone who is swayed by my, clearly opinionated and un-referenced post, is clearly an idiot who will listen to anything. But if a person were to research it on their own, they will undoubtedly have used it as a first step into the murky world of freemasonry, and my job will have been done. Also, if you're worried by the post of one individual like me spouting off some opinionated claptrap (as you might say) about your lofty organization, then you clearly don't give yourself or it very much credit!
      So, my advise is, leave it there. I've said my piece, you're on the record as a mason who believes freemasonry is without blemish, and we sir have nothing else to say to each other :-)
