How To Make Profit Selling $50 Shell Cordovan Wallets??
In part two of Corter's Sweet 16 celebration, we make the wallets and break down the cost, profit margin, labor and everything else that's involved in a home business event like this. I was a bit sick, but the wallets came out so great and writing inside of them was super, super fun. I can't thank you all enough for you support though the years - watch out for next week's video, it's another big one!
Congrats! SOLD OUT in under 2-3 hours!
Looks like they're still on sale on his website?
Its good to remember that people who follow you are buying your work because its from YOU. They want the logo because its a rememberance that it came from an artisan whose work they admire.
Nice of idea of writing inside to help define authenticity. Branding can be a tricky thing, especially when it comes to fine goods and minimalist design. It's balancing the value in defining the source of an item, while also allowing the design to speak, visually and aesthetically, for itself.
Sometimes the brand can take an oversized, and possibly distracting, place in the design. Some folks love them (want to show where it came from) and others prefer the pure, clean look. Another fun element of the design process 😃 Happy 16th Anniversary!
SWEEEET 16! I hope you take time to celebrate. Thanks for all the content, I've learned so much & was able to start my own leather biz & it's just fills my heart right on up. :) Cheers!
This is the most transparent business owner ever, way way better than most tiktok brands that rave about the quality of their products but really they have never seen what goes into the manufacturing that is probably in china.
that said ever considered making a duffle bag?
Already got mine! Really looking forward to this one - it's been an amazing journey learning from you and watching you be an instructive light in the community. Thanks for everything you do, Eric!
Thank you for all you have done over the years. I've enjoyed watching you grow, instruct, and share your knowledge. Happy Sweet sixteen anniversary!
Thank you Eric, yet again a brass tacks unfiltered movie. So helpful and informative. Can’t even begin to tell you how much I’m looking forward to grabbing a Corter Pounder and the knife. So exciting.
Congratulations on 16 years! They look fantastic
Just bought one. Super excited. Happy Anniversary!!
Eric: You seem to be in a 'teaching/business' kind of trend for your videos. I have a small request. These anniversary card holders were stamped out with a die. I am still looking for a tutorial on setting up an Illustrator file to send to a die maker. Specifically, making sure the file is accurate and will work when I get it back. I can certainly make patterns in Illustrator, but I do not know how to test them before sending them away. Is this something you would be open to making a video about?
This. Learning how to make a file to get a die made would be so useful!
Congrats Eric. Ima newbie. You've taught me so much in the one month when I started. You're my #1 go to for learning. Thx so much!!!!
the matt finish looks amazing!🤩
Happy 16th anniversary Eric/Corter Leather!! I would have loved one of those gorgeous card holders but I’m just seeing this and AGAIN, I missed out! 😭 So, since you love doing volume, please make more! I’m an artist so I’m really loving those artsy-colourful card wallets. How about doing some pre-orders? That way I can reserve one and not worry about missing out again. 🤩
I love your videos and your transparency.
Got mine ordered! Still kicking myself for missing out on last years, that shell was beautiful. Here's to many more years in business!
Happy birthday man thanks for all you do
Just placed my order! Can’t wait!
Lots of great information on this video series. Thank you (and hello from down under)
Yes enjoy your time off, reflect and relax. You deserve it
I was checking your store, and I just ordered 3 of those beautiful bracelets. I can't wait! As an artisan myself I really appreciate your work. Hugs from Texas!
Did u get yours
I did, and I absolutely love them. Thank you so much.@@trevorfillmore452
Cheers Corter. 👊
Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations!
The largest seller of clothing on eBay has this approach: "Some of the money all the time versus all of the money some of the time." It is good to see you embrace this also. And there is a larger market at $50/item than at $225. Both are profitable. Thanks for thinking of the common guy.
Got mine today. love them. Butter soft and smooth!!!!!
Brown with wax white stitching looking for purple or colorful trade ? If anyone is interested?
cool Eric see you on the next one
While we patiently wait for your pricking irons to come into stock at Buckleguy, can you make a video showing how the different widths look on different projects and thread thicknesses?
Love it got mine. I hope I get purple and crazy color one
Can you provide a link to the tannery where you bought the leather? Thanks.
Woo, tools next week!
Yep sold out I wanted one but didn’t even know when they were going to drop 😢 and as a maker I’ve got several people asking for shell wallets I’m going to go through them directly
WOOOO HAPPY SUITE 16!!!!!! Imma make you feel old now. You've been doing this since I was 11 years old haha!
Side note: when are you planning to get the knive holder released and then the stitching chisels restocked? Every time i check it goes out of stock haha
Thank youuuuuu! To be fair, even I was only 19 when I started this hahahaha. Chisels restock and all the new tools come out next thursday, finally!
Need to love an old whalers fan. Went to games myself. The whalers logo is the best!!!
love your videos ...I am a Maker and Am really looking for all advice I can get to be able to work out of my spot ....
I wish I could've gotten one of those 15 year bifold wallets
Where do you get your clicker dies from?
Is this pattern available for purchase?
Congratulations, your quality is superb. The Last time I tried to get an anniversary one for myself but you sold out quick. Anyrate I scored one this time, I am loving this as a momento for myself. This is Frank from Franks Fine Leather and retired . If you would not only sign mine but maybe say "to Frank" inside if you can? If not no biggie. PS. This is the first time I think I have seen your face it was a pleasure to meet you electronically. Congrats again. Let me know if you are interested for a Pretty new NP4 Bell Skiver with table and pedals I will let you name your price. If not no problem. Thanks again, my number is in my order if you wanna talk. Take care my brother and carry on the leather making business.
Just ordered one, but I'm seeing comments that they are sold out? Is that true?
16 years. Your work is amazing, love your videos. Happy sweet 16🎉🪡🧵🐎!!!!!
I missed out again 😂😂😂
Great video the ending felt like we were using FaceTime. 😊
WHAAAT? Sold out?
DANG IT ! !
I would love to buy a small scrap/sample of shell cordovan just so I can see what's special and different about it.
I'd suggest ordering a chip from Horween (tannery row is their forward facing retail website I believe) - they're about $45 and as good as it gets, they're just small - but big enough to make a small wallet or use for the front of a bifold :) You might just have to email them about chips, they don't usually advertise them. I don't think there's a minimum though!
Not sure you are using the category "Profit" correctly. Profit is not attached to anything like "utilities". Utilities comes out of cost of production. "Profit" is money, free and clear, and should go straight into your bank account.
I believe he explains your exact point in one of his other how to make profit videos that goes into more details. Profit being what is left over after paying for everything (materials, labor, etc)...and I'm pretty sure he includes utilities and rent. By the way, I think his workshop is solar powered.
@@emb5091 His costs are closer to $40.00 per wallet, when everything is included. At three wallets per hour, he is only earning $30/hr. not the $50/hr. he is seeking, and with Zero profit! Utilities means water and sewage and garbage as well.
Yes and dont forget about paying uncle sam :) he gets his cut lol!!
They sold out in under an hour. That is a bummer.
I can still see them on sale.
$30 in material and $20 labor does not leave another $8 for profit at a selling price of 50 bucks. Don't you also use a fulfilment center? They aren't doing it for free are they?
Not trying to make any arguments here. Everyone is free to run their business however they want to. But it's probably not a good idea to give business advice or advise others about the nuts and bolts of business, if they don't have a real solid idea of how it works. Everyone will have their own ideas about what their time is worth, but truthfully most people really don't account for time accurately. Was your 20 minutes per accurate? Who knows. None of it really matters to me. I'm just saying be cautious about giving advice, because your numbers don't add up.
why not hire someone to help you
Planning on it - had a full time employee for 9 years who just left to start her own thing. Just haven't found the right person yet
i volunteer as tribute!
That's not a wallet!
I might be in the minority but if I buy leather products from small business, I don't want their logo on it -- it feels weird to me lol
How? Makes zero sense
99.9% of people wouldn't recognize the logo, so that's why I don't want it. Granted Corter logo is pretty reasonable, but there are some logos that are just weird names of the channels and it makes the product feel cheap @@r4ptor-g4ming34
Bro that is just straight up disrespectful to the maker and small business. If im buying from a small business, especially if its hand made i want their brand/logo on it because i am proud to own their products
I can totally understand that from an aesthetic perspective and don't judge your aesthetic preferences at all - I also prefer unbranded stuff as you can see by what I wear and how I didn't brand these haha. I do my best in my production work to hide my branding or make it fit in a cool spot so it's part of the design, and maybe it's hidden when cards are in it. I think you might just not like VERY obvious branding, or bad branding placement, which I can totally agree with. Designing where a brand goes is part of my design process - it's got to fit, or it looks weird.
That being said, when it comes to an artisinal craft that takes years to learn I can also share that it does give you a little kick in the gut when someone asks you not to brand your work - it feels like the customer is asking the maker to just forget about all the hard work they put into learning their craft, because that mark often times not only represents a brand but years and years of practice. That being said, when I make a custom piece and someone asks for no branding, I'm happy to do it I just do not honor my lifetime warranty because without a makers mark there's no way to prove 5-10 years down the line that I made the piece.
I'm fully with you on no branding for clothing and mass made stuff. But with artisanal stuff, the maker's mark (be it a stamp, a signature, whatever) is a special part of a piece I've learned to love if it's done well. IF it's taking up the whole front of the wallet, nah bro lol
Nice
Can u send to Russia?
