"your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody... I can't recall my desire every reverie is on fire and i get a picture of all our yesterdays, yes today I can say..." Soooo great Al Jarreau ! !
this is another reason why the world sees the USA as one of the creative centres of the world, lest we forget, yep lots of problems but still the range and depth of the USA musical genius is amazing, thank you,
Jazzilian! And Mr. Sample is off the wall! Endearing. Amazingly talented! Truly, one of a kind. Al gave jazz new meaning. Will miss you, Mr. Jarreau. R.I.H.
For those that don't know, that is Steve Gadd on drums. He is one of the most influential drummers of all time. I've followed him for 30 years, and he never ceases to amaze me!
The sound is just, and what a groove the band are just, just, just, just amazing STEVE GADD you are just lager than life and that solo man you went to WAR with those drums and the groove through the solo well cant find words for that groove. reminds me of the way Gadd played on some of those early AL Dimeola albums. just huge.
For those of you who didn't have the priviledge to see or hear this master SCATTER could not appreciate his fabulous TALENT! MISS ELLA FITZGERALD, WHO WAS AND STILL IS THE WORLD'S REKNOWNED MISTRESS OF "SCATTING" ACKNOWLEDGED AND CELEBRATED AL'S TALENT!!!!!! OKAY!!!!!!july1656
Mr. Jarreau you'll always be my favorite male vocalist from the 80's also you take my breathe away with the CD All you Got " and love your latest. By the way anyone touring Spain let me know. Thanks for sharing.
I usually get a little bored with drum solos, but Steve Gadd makes me want to hear more, he's just amazing! and that bass drum sounds AWESOME!! GREAT VIDEO MAN! thanks for posting it!
Drums...what can you say about Gadd. He may be the most musical drummer ever. He oozes what we all strive to be which is a guy that makes the musicians around him better and ultimately happy and he looks like he gets off making that connection. Wow!
I saw this man at the Albery Hall (London - class venue) in the 80's. In my top 5 live performers. Truely a professional when the band leaves the stage for 'lunch' and he stays and does some amazing stuff - just his mouth doing all the instruments and singing as well! Take my hat off to you.
someone said awesome band this night understatement of the year joe sample steve gadd this is a masterclass how i wish i was there thank god for you tube once again
yes today I can say i get a kick every time i see you gaze at me...I see moments of history...your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody and we live again as if dreaming...the sound of my heart beats like castanets and forever we'll know their meaning....
These are only pieces by heart from my memory : "brigher days I can see such brighter days...when every song we sang is sung again and now we know this time is for good...and we're lovers once again and you're near me... I can remember the rain in december the leaves all brown on the ground, in Spain i did love and adore you, the bright light and songs were our joy each day and the nights were the hit of yearning...I can recall my desire...etc" I hope you will enjoy those small pieces.
I once had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Joe Sample. The band at the time I was with was the opening act for the Crusaders back in the early 1980's. When he takes this solo, you'd better strap yourself in!!!
To solo in a tune like this, it's important not to lose the basic pulse, as opposed to a free form solo that is not groove oriented. So having some percussion keeps that going while Gadd solos. Gadd keeps his left foot going to assist this, so that the solo maintains the pulse. Soloing over backing percussion opens a lot of options since the drummer is not as tied down to keeping the groove going. But they want to maintain the groove, hence the percussionist.
See the amazing Al Jarreau for his Greatest Hits Tour in London 2011 on the 3rd of July at The Royal Festival Hall, 24th of July Birmingham Symphony Hall and on the 25th of July at the Manchester Bridgewater Hall! It's also his first time back to Manchester and Birmingham in 15 years.
Steve Gadd makes me sick! And Joe Sample had me on the floor cowling in the fetal position. I should've through the flag on the play when I first saw all these cats together. It's illegal to have Al Jarreau together with these guys. Best vid I've seen in a long time!
Don't know if I already posted this: Funny thing is that the groove has a lot of samba influence. Steve Gadd's pickup f. ex. after the drum solo is 100% samba. Sure this is a mix of jazz-fusion, with afro-cuban and brazilian groove. Just find it curious, since the title is "Spain". Not saying they should have pulled of a flamenco. As it is, it is untouchable. And I love Al Jarreau. Anything he does on stage is not about him but about the music. Pure class and talent.
Anyone who doubts Steve Gadds greatness should have a listen to this.....my God how does he do it?
"your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody...
I can't recall my desire every reverie is on fire and i get a picture of all our yesterdays, yes today I can say..."
Soooo great Al Jarreau ! !
Joe Sample and Steve Gadd are just as strong as my boy is!!!!! Al will always be the man to me!!!!!! Again, the piano and drum solos were sick!!!!!

I am with you man! This is way out there. Untouchable!
Jazzilian! And Mr. Sample is off the wall! Endearing. Amazingly talented! Truly, one of a kind. Al gave jazz new meaning. Will miss you, Mr. Jarreau. R.I.H.

Reminded me. I need to see if Al Jerreau did a song called "Night in Tunisia". Now that would be wonderful. Going looking now.
We had a vinyl album of his and I'd always listen to it. I can't seem to find his song "Alonzo" online tho. Please share if you have it. Thanks!
