@@nelsonsalahub I got back into magic around that choir session, I think. Still need to make it down to the shop for canlander! I just play vs my brother right now
One thing I think the group missed on Ken is that it triggers on combat damage, not just combat damage to a player. He can first strike, kill a blocker, and still cast a spell. It’s pretty wild.
One thing I think worth bringing up for the Chaos Defiler, is that it doesn't target, so i'm fairly sure you can kill hexproof things or cards with protection (like true-name).
Was about to comment this but I figured someone had already done it. I'm sure they'll realize it on an FNPF and Serge will lose his True-Name in the process, like when he realized Rampaging Ferocidon also has menace
48:29 Ken just says combat damage, not combat damage to a player. So it doesn't matter if it's blocked or even blocking itself, the ability will trigger. The only thing that stops it is if the creature it would hit is removed before damage.
Something that does occur to me about the reaver titan: you can still crew it with other vehicles as well. Llanowar elves hops in the knight paladin, which hops in the reaver titan, which attacks for lethal.
I just realized that the ryu untapped symbol can also be a reference to the fact that one of the most common and simple ryu combos that I’ve seen in sf (I don’t really play sf so tell me if I’m wrong) is one of his normals into a haduken.
Nelson and Wheeler's riff on Tomb Fortress at the end there had some strong punt/counterpunt energy. Thanks for the content, I have consumed it and am engaged.
The mention of aristoscraps got me pretty excited because I’ve been side-eyeing the concept for a bit myself, with nadier’s nightblade/disciple of the vault/mayhem devil/marionette master, and since you’re playing artifacts you can probably run pitiless plunderer and possibly have the infinite combo kill with march of the machines.
A blue card that I was interested in hearing about was Sicarian Infiltrator (2U for a 1/2 with Flash, Squad 2 and ETB: Draw a card). To me it feels like a card that's never super exciting, but probably plays pretty well and flexibly. If the answer is that it's not powerful enough to find any home I'm not surprised, but I think it has at least some potential. Notably it and all the copies are artifact creatures, so there are some cute things it could do with Academy or Urza.
I've been wanting more redundancy for Chupacabra and in one commander product cycle we got 3 of them. - Primaris Eliminator - Chaos Defiler - Necron Deathmark
Want to apologize again for being rude to Wheeler about Defiler and also mention that I understood why that card is bad the second I saw Nelson play Regal Force in that deck - honorary elves need to either REALLY kill your opponent (craterhoof) or else refill your hand. While Old One Eye isn't Regal Force and I'm guessing still doesn't go in elves at least it's closer because of that action from the graveyard. Thanks again for all the content!
Anyone else play the 00s Sabertooth 40k CCG? That and the Horus Heresy followup contained some really interesting mechanics that I think bring across the strategy of a planetary scale battle quite well.
Glenn is kind of sweet with combat tricks. Leave it small so it's unblockable, and then after blocks have been declared, turn your Giant Growth into an Ancestral Recall.
Something that didn't get mentioned really is that Ken doesn't need to connect to your opponent for his triggered ability, it happens on any combat damage. Even if they chump you get a freebie, I also assume that even if Ken dies in that combat, you still get a chance to cast something for free, which means you can trade ken off with their best creature and THEN geddon for free.
This was a really fun one! I would say to Serge, though, don't cut them off early! We're hear to hear your thoughts, take the time you need if you want to ramble a little.
Something I think was missed with Chun Li, is that she goes infinite with take an extra turn cards if you can keep her from being blocked or dying. Suit her up with equipment or like an aqueous form and just kill them.
Isn't the only instant extra turn card Nexus of Fate? And that shuffles itself into your library so you'd have to get it into your graveyard by other means.
18:15 Idk what would be funnier: they got so excited about Zephyrim and Squad that they forgot to read the Miracle ability, or they didn't read it bc they were so excited about Squad they forgot it even had Miracle
I believe silver border and acorn stamped cards (un-sets) are not Canlander legal. I know Wheeler has talked about some cards he wish were canlander legal from past un-sets.
Of note the Kaldheim land is only 1 more mana than this and doesn't exile itself but a 1 mana reduction is nothing to scoff at. Then again, it's also useable at instant speed.
Ok, so speaking about 5 drops which have to be weighed against all the other 5 drops that have been printed throughout the history of magic (as we are constantly reminded of for those 5 drops that get no love), this white pseudo angel which we have to weigh against all other 5 drops is supposed to be better than the green defiler that we have to weigh against all other 5 drop big donkeys? Not so sure about that evaluation
I'm a little confused by the version of Phyrexian Devourer shown at 43:24, which has an extra line on the end of the activated ability that isn't in the original or the Oracle text which duplicates the state-based ability and would prevent the shenanigans they're talking about.
The ability still says "Phyrexian Devourer" so your Necrotic Ooze's and Trazya the Infinite's don't sacrifice themselves. That version is also from Masters Edition II, which was an MTGO only set, and likely only on there to ensure it functioned as intended digitally.
@@greatdinn8489 In MTG when a card refers to itself by name I'm pretty sure it always actually means "this card that is using the ability". Rule 707.11 covers that for full copies, I'm not sure the rule number for partial copying like this.
@@Sheer_FalacyYou are absolutely correct, my mistake there. Goes to show I shouldn't fire off an answer quickly, just because. Research shows that the reason is simple errata. They don't get the triggered ability of "Sacrifice if it has 7 power," and the clause in the activated ability is not present in the Oracle text because they changed it back to its original wording in 2012.
In regards to Celestine not being an angel, she wasn't born with wings. She was once a regular sister of battle and somehow got her wings by some "magical" (in 40k, called psychic) means. There is a lot of deep lore about the Emperor's status as perhaps a god and then she might have gotten her wings through faith in the Emperor. Should she be an angel still? Probably, but my only point is that her not being an angel isn't random, but one way to interpret the lore If anyone who's deeper in the lore has a better explanation or if I've misunderstood the lore, do reply with a better explanation!
I expected them to talk about Atalan Jackal, card seems sweet but maybe not on Canlander, my head is way too stuck on EDH where connecting with a haste creature on turns 2-3 is easy
Question for you on Chun-Li. What about something simple like putting a Timewalk under it? If you get this out early with some fast mana doesn't that just close the game?
You can never go too slow in this podcast series. Serge, stop being so orderly and instead just let these fantastic beasts ramble as much about fringe useage of cards or tell random anecdotes or banter... that's what we're here for! 😁

Yeah that card can also block, and Armageddon during your opponents combat step. Which is absolutely wild.
I was gonna mention this, glad somebody else caught it. Really ups the power level, especially with first strike.
Glad Nelson is on the show, brings a lot of entertainment and insight into the format.
I really love North 100 & any LRR Canadian Highlander content! Nelson is a solid addition to the show
Definitely agreed! Having Nelly on the show has been great! 😁👍
The best thing about the consistent opening bit of Wheeler is not actually the bit itself but the consistent chuckle Serge produces afterwards.
One thing I think worth bringing up for the Chaos Defiler, is that it doesn't target, so i'm fairly sure you can kill hexproof things or cards with protection (like true-name).
I think it would get through hexproof but protection would still stop the destroy effect where it wouldn't stop a sacrifice effect.
@@Anthius Protection stops targeting, damage, blocking, and attachments. It does not prevent destruction.
Yeah the chaos defiler gets through both.

Unrelated to the matter at hand, but I am loving Serge's shoes here.

i had never put together that Ryu has an untap ability because the untap symbol mimics the quarter circle motion input for the attack
