    Great explanation, exactly why I am só happy to know piano music, it should be made obligatory before studying guitar 🙂 really it makes it so much easier to understand if you basic musical theory was learned on piano, not guitar. But cool trick you show in the end! Love the handle in the middle of your Ibanez guitar body, really creative

    I think you mentioned this in another video but I deaden the 6th string when playing A (the 5th and 4th string power chord) by using the first finger. Put the tip of the finger lightly on 6th string.
    Then you can strum however you like and never having to bother about hitting the 6th string.
    I have only played 2-finger power chords. I don't like using the pinky. It becomes a liability. Another thing that can go wrong. If I want to become faster at changing chords, I just practice it more.
    If someone wants to play an interesting power chord, try playing the 6th string and 4th string and deadening the 5th (1-x-3 or 5-x-7 for example in tabulator-form).
    Or if you want to play something really heavy, play the 6th and 5th string with your first finger and 4th string with your 2nd finger. Death metal-heavy. From the top string, that would be 1-1-3 or 5-5-7 in tabulator-form.

  • @jacmusic9152
    @jacmusic9152 6 месяцев назад

    I can't even lie, if I'm trying to do a 5th string power chord, I just move my pinkie and ring finger one string over, and keep barring the 6th and 5th string with my pointer, it's essentially just 2 octaves mashed together, and it sounds heavier for no extra cost since you're just playing the 5th of the power chord on the 6th string instead of just leaving it to not be played lol

      Thanks for watching, DLM! And don't despair, many (if not most) guitarists struggle with power chords and barre chords at first.
      The good news is, the more you do these chord shapes, the easier they become. Steve's got a video you should check out here → guitarzoom.com/products/chords-made-easy
      Just click the link, then scroll down a little. Watch the video called #1 Trick to Make Your Chords Better and Faster. In that video, Steve shows you a technique called "bouncing" that will help you build muscle memory, so you can make chords easily with less discomfort.
      The video is about open chords, but you can use the same technique for power chords and even barre chords.
      In fact, here's some previews from Barre Chords Made Easy if you want to check them out: guitarzoom.com/products/barre-chords-made-easy-3
      Hope this helps! :-)

      It’s not that I can’t play them, I can play them nice and crisp everytime, but it seems my hand just starts cramping after a couple barres, but if it’s open chords I’m fine oh well

    • @stinemusiclessons
      @stinemusiclessons  3 года назад +1

      Gotcha! I meant to say this before, but the reason many guitarists struggle with barre chords and power chords is because they are physically harder to play than open chords. Instead of pushing a few strings down, you have to push them all down. And that causes you to use muscles in your hand that you aren't used to using, which can lead to cramping and things like that.
      Did you try the "bouncing" exercise? That can help, even if you've got the shape of the chords memorized. Because the more strength you can build in your hands, the longer you can play difficult chord shapes without having problems.
      Also, the more you play barre chords and power chords, the more you'll figure out subtle ways to hold your hand and fingers, so you can press strings down more effectively with less effort.
      Just trying to help! I am a guitar player myself, and I have had similar problems with barre chords and power chords over the years. Steve's tips have helped me a lot, so I just wanted to pass it along. :-)
      Have a great day, and no matter what, keep playing!
      -- Mike from GuitarZoom
      P.S. One more thing, be sure to stretch before you play. Here's a video where Steve shows some of his favorite stretching exercises:
