THE MONKEY'S PAW (2011) | Ricky Lewis Jr | Short Film

- Faithfully adapting W.W. Jacobs' story this film is set in England, 1936 when a family falls victim to superstitions surrounding a talisman from India said to grant three wishes. Shot in 2007-2008 with the same cameras supplied by famed Panavision used to produce the Star Wars prequels and using storybook visuals to create an atmosphere of a timeless tale. You may also recognize Ignacio Serricchio from Netflix's Lost In Space. Exceptional actor and one of the coolest guys on the planet.
This was produced in the earlier days of the digital boom taking over film for production so it had quite a learning curve for our team. It was quite the labor of love and commanded a lot of my free time after work storyboarding on feature films and TV. The story haunted me as a kid and I reached the right point in my career to Write, Produce and Direct this version which is the one that stuck in my imagination. No way could I have made it through without the help of the skilled crew and exceptionally dedicated cast. I think it holds up well this many years later though this original transfer to RUclips is on the darker side.
But.... there's a better transfer to be seen and it's a deeply appreciated way to support future productions. vimeo.com/ondem...
Thank you for watching this and be sure to subscribe and give a glance to the next films coming. It will be very soon. They sometimes have to spend a lot of time on the festival circuit before I can land them on a place like the wonderful RUclips.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all. Happy viewing!
Cheers,
Ricky Lewis, Jr.

If this wasn’t an English assignment and someone wanted to actually make this a legitimate movie, this would actually be an extremely creepy thing to make in a movie
It is a movie. Look it up. It's quite modern too.
This short film was made in 2011 (it's in the title). Do you really think that they made it just so that you can do an English assignment?
If this WEREN'T an English assignment. CONDITIONAL!!! That's an F for you.
this isn't an English assignment doink it's literally a movie. you're commenting under the movie saying someone should make a movie about this.
@@robinabernathy2829 I remember a TV production of this way back in the 1970s. I'm willing to bet the story has been filmed before that, it is a classic story after all!

@@ggewk .....
@@ggewk for using an emoji in your comment, I suppose that you're one of the 8th graders that had to watch this as an assignment. Not to gatekeep or anything, but I don't expect you to understand this short film, or the fact that it's a faithful recreation of the original work, and why that matters.
This is cool and all but they shouldn't have shown the corpse of the son walking outside, because that needs to be ambiguous. Part of the reason this story is so scary is that we, as the audience, don't know whether the paw really is granting wishes or maybe it is all a coincidence.
Gladius714 Hmmm I really wanted to see the dead body but when you put it like that you have a point.
I think it was fine. It didn’t show much - which is perfect.
The story drops hints that it isnt a coincidence, such as the graveyard being two miles away, the knocking being stopped the second the father made his third wish, its only mr white that tries to excuse these events as coincidence but by the end he knew it was real otherwise he wouldnt have made that third wish
@@FimbongBass There is a difference between intellectually knowing something and instinctually believing it.
While we may think something makes sense, sometimes our brains choose to believe something else anyway simply because it is easier - more comfortable - to do so. Mr. White, for example, probably knew the Monkey's Paw was actually effective, but did not want to believe it because it's so much easier to attribute the death of his son to coincidence. Otherwise, he'll constantly blame himself for the death of his son. He is, one can say, in a state of denial.
I as the guy making the wishes would have unburried the body first, just in case
POV: ur going through the comments to see if there is anyone here from the 2020-2021 school year who also has to watch this for ela.

Morris' three wishes:
1) To leave the war. He was wounded by having his balls shot off and sent home.
2) For his wife to be more beautiful. She died, but the funeral director was a brilliant artist and embalmer.
3) To never be tied down to one place. He was framed for a murder and has been on the run from the police ever since.
Did you make that up or is that really what he wished for? :/

Man I like how a lot of these people are here because of school. I'm just here because I like the concept of it, it's really interesting and I feel like it'd be more enjoyable for most viewers if they weren't doing this for an English assignment. I'm not hating on anyone because they are doing this just for school, but I just feel like more people will enjoy learning about this concept of they actually had an interest in the consequences of wishing.
I'm here with you. Apparently most of them are in 8th grade, which this short film is something that I would expect to have had to watch for my perspectives in literature class in uni. I mean, at least we're moving up in what we expect from them.

So Mr. White almost started the zombie infection
Tay Jackson in the story it says the wind was making faint knocks on the door. All of this could have been a coincidence and that he died by mistake and they coincidentally gave him the amount of money they wanted. Then he wished his son was back and the wind was at the door and Mr. White then wished his son to leave and then the wind stopped blowing. All of it could have been a coincidence of events.
Z U C C
That is actually genius writing in my opinion. You never truly know if the monkey's paw worked or if it was just coincidence.
BigAlsAngryBirdVids so the paw also shocking ur hand during each wish is also coincidence
*corona infection

Who else is here because it's for an a assignment
We read this in school around 1970. I’ll never forget the conversation that took place concerning the teacher asking, “Who was at the door?” One of the smartest students (among around 300 total in our grade) said, “The monkey.” The teacher asked, “What monkey?” The girl then said she had read the story three times and concluded it was the monkey coming back to get its paw. On on hand I felt good about knowing the real answer but, felt even better about knowing what the girl erringly thought it meant and the teacher being totally clueless about her answer.
It’s 2020 and I have now done this assignment two years in a row

That sound that Mr. White made after he said literally just killed me.
The teacher already showed this in class
I just came back for the unexplained ending....
I remember my fifth grade teacher telling me this tale over twenty years ago and I never forgot it. This is the first time I've seen a film adaptation of it and I think this is very good. Only a few things were off; the Whites were an elderly couple with an adult son and I think the actors playing them were a bit young for the part. And Mr. White asked for 200 pounds, not 300 :) And although the story never did say the price for the third wish, I believe it might be Mrs. White dying of grief.
so true, too young to be an old couple
@@moa8173 And the son too old.
I think the fact that she realizes she can never have her son back is a steep enough price.

Now that would be gruesome!
who discovered this before their english assingment ?
Ok first of all, the movie adaptation from the book to movie boring. If any of you are here because of English class assignment to compare the book and movie, just say the book is better. At least you have your imagination to work with instead of this boring visual piece of a film. Acting can put someone to sleep, the setting is too dark, and what the hell are even the background of the outside scene's?! Did the film maker not have enough money to get some decant props or does this man not like going outside and had the "Outside" parts filmed behind a large green screen. And they also got some details wrong from the book, the parent's are supposed to be older, they are meant to receive the 200 pounds to pay off the house mortgage not 300 pounds just for the sake of having a reason to have your son die for greedy reasons.
And thats all I have to say folks! Just say that the book or movie is better and bullshit it like crazy.
Thanks for the answers lol
