Man, this song sure ain't easy on bass either. Been struggling with it for a fat while now. Especially the part at 6:32 where you gotta hit those 32nd notes with three fingers. Oh and 9:07 is a bitch too.
@@pjotrvangriensven Idk if that will help but I'm a beginner and I noticed that when I really feel something, even when it's just scales that I'm practicing, it sounds way better (and feels easier too) when I really really feel it. The dude in the video seems to be in the zone.
WOW - what an awesome version - one of the best covers I think I have ever seen on RUclips. May I also compliment that fact that you seem to answer nearly every comment. Not many people bother to do that. So given that I kind of understand how hard it must be to cover a complex song like this - does it blow your mind too, Geronimo - that someone ACTUALLY WROTE THIS???
Absolutely! As I was learning it my mind was completely blown away thinking just that! It's freaking insane! Just thinking "we better switch to this weird tuning, cuz it's gonna be better" is plain crazy! And thank you for the compliments!!
@@HemeHaci I mean I know what it is... But for a metal band to go and switch to that tuning for a metal song, it's pretty weird! Same thing with Devin Townsend and his open Cs and Bs, it's just not common in the genre
All perfect! Just one tip, the prechorus after "devil cracked the earthly shell" when holding the chords you're going 333->222->111 when it should be 336,333->225->111 and then back to that tasty lick
Man, nicely done. Most people screw up Opeth's riffs as they tend not to pay attention to how Mikael voices them (higher up on low strings). Nailed it.

I'm a relative beginner just trying to learn a few riffs off this song with tabs but man I swear the timing for this is just so difficult. 1:26 is my dream riff... man.. that is a cool fcking sound.
Awesome cover bro! I’m trying to create melodies in this specific type of playing which starts around 2:57 if you got any tips or advice let me know! Would be much appreciated
Thanks man! Well that riff is pretty much moving on one string and using a lot of open strings. The difficulty lies in finding notes so haunting and that work so perfectly with the open strings. But is nothing new. This is like a swedish and darker version of what Megadeth did on foreclosure of a dream, which is the same approach of open strings and moving notes on only one.
Great cover Geronimo !!! I started some months ago to record my cover (all guitars + bass) of this one too (this is a true masterpiece !!) but I unfortunately don't have time for the moment to continue it.....Maybe one day !!! Keep up the nice work !
Thanks! I used Amplitube 4, with the dual rectifier emulations if I remember correctly, most likely with a tube screamer in front. It's impossible to tell you "set you amp to this and that" because it'll be different with every amp and guitar.
@@GeronimoEgea That's enough info to work with thanks man. My biggest obstacle with this song is muting strings and not having a bunch of unwanted noise because it's such a busy riff.
Thanks man! Well, I've listened so much to that record that I already kinda had the song clear in my head, just had to figure out the fingerings. Oh and the TUNING was a bitch. Don't pay that much attention to the guitar price range. You could easily find that PRS I'm using there, used, for $300 usd, which isn't that much expensive than your Ibby. The real key is the amp (or the amp emulation, which is what I used for this video). You could get the best guitar in the world, in a shitty amp, and it will suck. But a cheap (but decent) guitar on a great amp will sound pretty good. For this, for the distorted parts, I used amplitube 4, using the Mesa Dual Rectifier emulation, red channel, with a tube screamer (also emulated in amplitube) in front.
Thanks man! A little bit of both. Started by ear and got the tuning all wrong (I thought it was regular drop D), then when something was wrong and couldn't tell (it was the tuning!) went for some tabs and live videos.
