A 14 foot boat needs more than a 9.9 hp engine. My 12 foot has a 9.9 yamaha on it and I can barly plane off. I love the engine its quiet and very dependabl!
My dad bought an Alumacraft 14 footer in the 1950s and he loved it. The first one actually was sold with a missing rivet and of course leaked accordingly. Dad took it back to the dealer and got a new one, which is still in use by 3 generations of fishermen later. The boat was rated to take no more than a 7.5 hp engine so Dad bought a Martin (Made by the National Presto pressure cooker company in Eu Claire, WI) 7.5 hp twin that didn't always run well, but is also still in use. I have many fond memories of that boat, but always wished you could use a Johnson 10 hp on it. The game warden actually checked the motor power/boat rating!
