Not wanting to turn into my mom was one of my biggest fears. A wise therapist told me" you can't, it's impossible - the very fact that you're here saying this to me means you're already such a different person." Lovely that your wife is a good sounding board too
I totally understand. My father is a narcissist and my mom is a covert narcissist. My greatest fear in life was to turn out like them until a wise person told me that a narcissist would never have such a fear because they believe there's nothing wrong with them. The relief I felt was amazing.

Colby... i keep typing and erasing and typing and erasing. All i know that i can get into words is that you were Tylee & JJ's amazing big brother, and now the roles have switched and they are your guardian angels. I have tried to imagine myself "in Colby's shoes" & it's an absolute nightmare. You are incredible, insightful & full of grace. Thank you for letting us in to the most raw, gut-wrenching part of your life. We don't deserve it, but we're so grateful. I promise...A lot of us want to understand, not crucify. Thank you Colby

I wrote down, in regards to being a people pleaser.. it’s not being nice.. you’re neglecting yourself to please someone else… and I felt that to my core. Thank you, Colby.
Perfectionism and people pleasing led me down a dark path to alcoholism.

Colby you have a true gift for podcasting and interviewing people.
Dr. John is probably the best person for Colby to talk to therapeutically. Not only because he's so intelligent and empathetic, but because he knows so much about the intricacies of what happened. I'm so glad that they were able to connect again, and that Colby is starting to be able to heal and sort out his feelings about everything. I hope they can talk more privately because I really believe Dr. John can help Colby better than others due to the vast knowledge that he has on the case. ❤

I think Colby was describing what Lori was saying to him about herself, he used "I" in her voice to relate the "two years left" part. That's besides the more general impending doom of the end of the world fixation.
She was talking about her own death, not his. Still highly difficult for a child to experience either way, but for clarity’s sake…
I am so thankful Colby has a very strong survival instinct. 🙏

But this case/true story has been on many of our hearts and minds since December 2019. thank you Matthias family (Dr. John and Lauren) and Colby Ryan/Kelsey and Vallow/Woodcock, Nate Eaton/EIN ,Justin Lum, law enforcement and this supportive community.

You continue to help me, Colby. Your bravery gives me strength as I head into a legal battle with my elderly, mormon, hyper-religious, narcissistic mother. She continues to resist giving up custody of my youngest brother, who is a disabled adult. I am really very concerned about his safety.
I constantly think about your siblings and how you would have fought for their lives if you had had any kind of advanced warning. I lean on your courage for support and strength. Thank you for all that you do!

I don't think it's a matter of "maturity". I think some people are just more perceptive, more grounded, and more aware already as young people. And on top of that, such a massive traumatic experience like that propels one into having to grasp for a broader picture of reality.
And just the opposite, some people regardless of their age, never grasp a sense of maturity.
But anyway, I do think Colby will be one of those great souls who make a mark on the world that others can gain and grow from. Maybe with his inside view, he can help society to better understand the root causes of delusional disorders.
@Colby J Ryan, when I first saw the interview with Lori, the main thing ringing through my mind was; Oh no, why would you do this to yourself, Colby?
I was struggling to see anything of value in it for you, or anything that could be beneficial for you. I thought, that with having a lot of experience with toxic, manipulative and abusive people, that I knew that all that conversation could do for you, was to hurt you further. I was wrong, and of course I was! I've had a lot of abuse and manipulation directed at me, but not to the degree that you have, and this follow-up has truly humbled me, and I truly appreciate that. I'm almost a decade older than you, and it's important to remember that that doesn't mean s*it at the end of the day, because I've never experienced what you've experienced, so why would I know better, just because I've been alive for longer? I always hated it when older generations would put forth their age as the reason they knew better about any subject, even if they'd never so much as read a single page out of one book on said subject, and it's good to be reminded of those things every once in a while.
Hearing you explain that, now you know, all the way deep to your core, that you did everything you could. You have listened, and you've tried, and you've done everything you can for her, and with her, and you can finally let go, knowing that there is nothing left for you to say or do. It's almost like when a broken bone heals poorly, all you can do is to break it again to fix it, if that makes sense? You had an injury that healed poorly, and in order to heal properly, you had to allow her to hurt you again. I truly hope that you can finally move on in whatever way you want, and I wish for all the best for you in moving forward. Thank you for sharing these thoughts with us, and for bringing us with you on your healing journey, and in helping others heal from their trauma.

Dr. John and Lauren have taken this case seriously and respectfully- when it's so easy for creators on RUclips to sensationalize the whole ordeal. Colby, I hope that the Matthiases can help you come closer to healing from the multiple losses you've endured.
My heart goes out to you, Colby. I had to cut ties with my family, and I've accepted the fact I will never receive an apology from them. I have my wonderful inlaws who have adopted me as theirs.

the answer at 30:15 or so, of how did she get to murdering them "zombies" instead of casting them out like Mark's version, is.the book......"Visions of Glory". which says at some point of possession by bad spirits gets to a tipping point, one should kill the person to release them from the bad spirits. Visions of Glory and its author are source of that idea.
I'm so glad that Colby has really good people like John in his corner. He has lost so much family but I'm glad he has gained some sincere friends who love him like family.

Thank you for this interview. My husband comes from an abusive childhood and she is definitely mentally ill. We totally cut contact but sometimes it's hard for him. This interview helped him further process it. Thanks for being a strong brave example for him and so he knows he's not alone. His mom also continually talked about driving off the bridge with all 8 kids in the car. Both his brothers are in prison for the same murder. It's a shitty situation but I am grateful for you sharing your life with everyone and grateful that your example helped my husband. Praying for you and your mom ❤

51:39 Colby, You are so brave! One thing I can't stop thinking about is that your mom put you in a position as husband/spouse. That is such a confusing thing for a child to go through. You should have just been her son but she made you, and leaned on you as a spouse and BURDENED you with the responsibilities you never agreed too or could not even do? God Bless You!!❤❤❤❤
One of the great things that you’re doing by doing your podcast and speaking on what happened and how it’s all affected you, is you’re giving other people who are in a somewhat similar situation an example of something they can do, if they want or need to. I hope I’m making sense. You’re showing other victims, survivors, family members of those lost to violence that it’s ok to speak out and share their feelings, if they choose. That if they’re ready, or if they wish they could, they can. Obviously, every situation is different. Some may never want to speak on it, but they can if they do.
Though we may not understand your pain, we at least see it, and we support you. And we support others in your situation. Like if family members of the Idaho college students, or family of those girls in Delphi want to speak out, we’re here to listen. We’re here to support. We’re complete strangers, but we care and we’re praying for you and your family. You’re siblings are not forgotten by us. You’re not forgotten either, bruv. We’re behind you.

Lauren and Dr John are some of the most compassionate people I've seen have these conversations. They really dig deep into the human mind and the possibilities and reasons why people do what they do. They don't make excuses but they dig into what brought someone to that point.
This is soooo helpful to so many. Now I understand why your name is scar wars. We heal then rip open scars. We battle between truth and loved ones false reality.

@elizabethroberts6169 Two former colleagues, who are now a married couple, left the LDS church earlier this year. They are members of a recovery group for ex Mormons, something I didn't know existed. There is so much to unravel, which has led them to believe that they were in a cult. I was a senior manager in the company where we all met. The owner was LDS, and a very difficult person to deal with. He broke every rule in the book, every day. He had an affair with a Sales rep, as his wife was pregnant with their 3rd child. He drank coffee daily. When he travelled for business, he drank alcohol to excess.
How astonishing that such a "sinful" man was held in such high esteem by the LDS movement.
Not all members are fixated, on the End Times.

Listening to Colby talking about Lori telling him she and him were going to die soon and things like that had me balling 💔 how can you do that to your child. Hearing you say that the interview was your goodbye to your mother, I can't imagine how hard that was for you but I am so proud of you! 😢 Hugs Colby! Question for Dr. JOHN. Are there medications that could be given to Lori that would lessen her delusions and ground her back to reality?

I'm not a psychologist. But if it were a medication issue, they would offer them to her. Every person has a choice to participate in therapy or medical treatment. The Word of God states that when we turn from God repeatedly , "God the Creator Himself will SEND STRoNG DELUSIONS that they would believe a lie."
In order to know truth and live in reality, we have to CHOOSE TO KNOW. Choose reality. Vs. Delusions. Part of being deluded I believing it is reality. Deluded means deceived. We don't understand when we are deceived. Deception is believing a lie. Terrifying. Trust that God will help the person who relies on HiM for truth and assistance. . . .
Part of the Cluster B diagnosis is being invested in unreality, paranoia, and self centeredness. It's not a chemical imbalance like some mental health diagnosis are.
It's being transformed by changing my thoughts intentionally. On purpose. We don't do that unless we want to do it and choose to be changed!!!
@@karistutzman8381 I’m not Dr John, but I remember when Lori was declared unfit to stand trial in the very beginning and she was placed in a facility then but she refused medication, and I’m sure she would refuse again because in her mind there is nothing wrong with her.

I am sending you lots of love. I grew up in an abusive household too. My abuser was also my mom. My mom would blow up over small things too. I am so proud of you for the healing work you have done. I know from personal experience how hard it can be.
This was the best podcast with the 2 of you. Please always stay in touch with each other. Colby you are so brave and kind. Hope that I could be as respectful as you were to your mother. Take care of yourself, the gem you have for a wife, and your children. You are a great dad. As your children get older the only thing you can be with them is honest. I liked what John said about throwing pop culture into Lori's void to see what would stick. Then Colby's reflection that she couldn't accept hardship is part of life on Earth. She had to make herself special.

Colby, that was seriously so deep, and the fact that you have come to that conclusion absolutely shows that you are breaking the cycle! It would be so easy for you to choose to ignore all of this pain about your mom and the horrible things she's done to you. I'm not positive, but it seems like ignoring the pain might be the more common thing people do. The fact that you are choosing to actively work through it all is absolute proof that you are and will break the cycle!! I truly hope you allow yourself to be proud of yourself, Colby. You are changing the world for your kids, and that is the very best gift you can give them, Kelsey and yourself!! I don't matter at all in your life but I just want to tell you that I am so proud of you!! I am a 50 year old momma of 2, Grandma of 1, and you inspire me!!

As a total outsider, just an interested observer who has closely got into this case, I think this is the single most impactful & significant discussion of the "Daybell-Vallow case", as we outsiders might call it, to date.
I cannot express to you Colby how much I, some dude far away, am rooting for you.
There's a theme of yours that rang very true to me - the role of fictional stories, especially movies.
In recent preceding years I've studied Qanon quite a bit. I was struck very early on in that, from 2018-9 in my case, by the role of movies in the conspiracy (fantasy) narratives. The whole Q thing looked ridiculous to me from the get go but millions of people made it wholesale a reality in their minds, and identities both real and in social media.
Movie archetypes, scenes & characters run through the Qanon stories like our veins & arteries run through our bodies. And speaking as a non-religious person I think in Lori's case the religious stories, the LDS components that fixate on non-real or supernatural personas and concepts (God & heaven for example) blend into the fictional and imagined narratives that Lori absorbed from movies and books.

Telling ourselves stories has been part of the human experience since we started talking. I think that you are have really touched on something important that I’m not sure I have the language for, but I’ll be thinking it over for awhile.
For a deeper insight into the fabric of the Cox/Ryan families, visit podcasts called AMurderousHeart by Annie Cushing, Joe Ryan's sister. You can see how L.R/V/D became so adept at controlling those around her and how the family were taught by Lori's parents that the family were "above" everyone else - in looks, money, community power, with a right to behave in non-LDS ways whilst still ascribing themselves as pious LDS members, etc.. Colby seems to be getting a better idea of just how manipulative his mother was. Must be hard for a child to distinguish truth from indoctrination at such young ages when all you want is to be able to have the love, albeit conditional, from the one constant in your life. Plus the constant relocations would also make the children depend even more on their mother. Her power over them manifested when poor Tylee lied about the shooting of her step-father... There are so many still grieving because of this woman. We also call for justice for Joe Ryan.

I went through something as nutty and unbelievable as this (though not as public and the end was not as devastating). My father was a monster and I was a decade older than Colby wheni began my recovery. I love the way Dr. Matthias responded to Colby. His compassion and unbiased ear is remarkable.
