Following glycolysis, gluconeogenesis takes place mainly in the liver, synthesizing glucose from non-carbohydrate sources, thereby maintaining blood glucose levels during fasting.
Lipid metabolism is another crucial topic. It includes the breakdown of fatty acids through beta-oxidation in the mitochondria, producing acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH2. These molecules enter the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation to generate ATP. Additionally, lipid metabolism encompasses ketogenesis, which produces ketone bodies during prolonged fasting or diabetes, serving as an alternative energy source for the brain.
Protein metabolism involves the degradation of amino acids, where the amino group is removed through deamination, producing ammonia. The urea cycle, primarily occurring in the liver, converts toxic ammonia into urea for excretion. This process is vital for nitrogen balance and detoxification in the body.
Nucleic acid metabolism includes the synthesis and degradation of DNA and RNA. Purine and pyrimidine synthesis are essential for nucleotide production, which are the building blocks of DNA and RNA. Any disruption in these pathways can lead to significant disorders, highlighting their importance in maintaining genetic integrity.
