    As an American who knows next to nothing about Rugby, I've been watching a lot of Rugby refereeing videos recently as I find them fascinating. People in the US get all up in arms when it comes to new rules surrounding player safety in the NFL. I understand hard hits are fun to watch, but now that I see how the referees take safety super seriously in Rugby, I totally see how we can make the NFL safer while keeping an exciting sport. I also REALLY like how sportmanship seems to be one of the most important rules. In sports they always have a rule about being a fair competitor, but it seems to be taken seriously on another level in Rugby. I have thoroughly been enjoying seeing how some Rugby refs have been conducting themselves (I know there are probably some known for being "bad" but I'm talking about the good examples).
    The NFL, and soccer/football referees/players can learn a thing or two from Rugby I think.
    Refs take a lot of verbal abuse and there's always this arbitrary line that you can't cross depending who is refereeing. Whereas in Rugby, that line appears to be clearly defined. Act like an adult and the referee will treat you like an adult. Act like a child, you will get a warning, then you will be sent off to sit in timeout like a child.

    Back in 2007 when Wayne Barnes was still inexperienced at the top level of refereeing he got thrown in the deep end by former referee's boss Paddy O'Brien, who gave him that infamous RWC Quarter Final. While the All Blacks got too complacent against France and were just as guilty for losing that game, they weren't helped by Barnes' freezing like a possum in the headlights, who missed more than just that forward pass in Yannick Jauzion's winning try for Les Bleus.
    I can't imagine what it was like for him having to deal with the fallout to that game as back then social media was still in its infancy. I remember that some fans took their criticism too far though. I believe he has done the odd interview here and there reflecting on what happened that night.
    Some referees might never recover from that level of hatred - NZ referee Bryce Lawrence's career effectively ended after Springbok fans tore him apart after the 2011 RWC Quarter Final loss to the Wallabies - but Barnes was able to resurrect his career and has become the best in the business after Nigel Owens' retirement. While some ABs fans might still grizzle occasionally about that 2007 game many of them have buried the hatchet with Barnes and respect him as a referee now.

      Just testing a theory here.... you think perhaps rugby players show that much respect to the referee BECAUSE the referees don't take shit from them? If so, then the likes of Barnes and Owens deserve just a little bit more respect than they already get because when rugby becomes like football it will no longer be worth watching...

    • @j0esh91
      @j0esh91 3 года назад +2

      @@Karma-qt4ji I guess rugby has stricter laws about it, which has obviously over time led to players being careful about what they say or do around a referee, but also just because of who rugby players are. An enormous amount of respect is usually built when you play in a rugby team, after tackling and hitting each other over and over in training. Similar reasons as to why boxers seem to have a lot of respect for their opponents after they've fought, it just takes a lot of balls to play rugby often, and people come to be respectful of each other, and slowly more respectful of other people in general.

      @@joeroddwell2577 It's not gone soft, it's about making sure people arew safe and that players respect the laws of the game. I played league mostly and a bit of onion (Still play masters) and loved smashing players whatever the size, but you have to play with respect to your opponent and the fact they are human beibgs too. No matter what the stakes this is sport not a gladitorial arena. I wanted to hurt people badly, but do it legit, the sport had=s not gone soft and you can still hurt people and do them psychologically as well. however we have improved how things go regards player welfare generally and if players can't control their actions/reactions then they need to get sat down, either for a short break or the rest of the match. Ensure you make the teams know this is how things are going to go then you're more likely to have control from them and that means better safety, better spectacle and more enjoyable to play. There's nothing worse frankly than niggle going on all game and then handbags which turns into someone getting really badly hurt. Have seen it happen and its not acceptable. if one doesn't like getting told off by the official for being a prick, either don't participate or don't be a prick. In this case the player was being a prick/baby and was fortunate not to get a yellow for dissent. Maybe next time he and others will think more about what they do and what they say, that we we get on with the game, focus on legitimately dominaiting the opponent and we all go home without having had some serious injury caused by one or more losing their shit because the official lost control by not enforcing the laws of the game!

Doesn't take any crap, makes a decision and stands by it, always able to clearly and eloquently explain himself, and puts player safety above all else. Plus he doesn't carry on the way Nigel Owens does ... or did, I guess. All that barrister training coming to the fore, I suppose. Full points to the man for the way he handles a game, it can't be easy as a top flight referee but he kinda makes it look like it is.
