I recently watched his movie, which I picked up at a dollar store. My wife and I were moved to tears. What a tremendous story and a very touching song by Lanny Ross! He has that unpretentious singing style of a generation that meant what it said. It leaves a lump in my throat just thinking about what our parents and grand parents did to save us from fascism. Everyone worked together as they never have since. Both my parents served during WWII and this movie reminds me of their lives together.
I sing opera with the New Orleans Opera and I always sing along when I hear this song on Stage Door Canteen and I simply cannot get though it without choking up and tearing. It is THE most sentimental song I've EVER heard.
You only have to think of a couple on the last night of his leave, when the probability is high that he won't be back, telling her that he'll be there in dreams. At the time during war, it would have been unbearable. It's a beautiful song sung by a wonderful, powerful voice.
Thank you for sharing your story even though it was seven years ago from this date. 😊 Do you have any RUclips videos on your singing? I hope this message since you well. Cheers
It showed exactly how it was. The words he sings as well. Two lovers on a date, with the boy just about to leave for O/S. There was always the risk that it was for the last time and he would be killed. So, he was comforting her with something to ease the pain.
Lanny's voice is so haunting. I remembered 'Forever' from "Guillevers Travels" since I was a little girl & now because of the internet, I've rediscovered Lanny Ross. Something good comes out of every bad.
They've been showing Gullivers Travels frequently on television. As a child I remember the songs from it played on radio. I didn't realize the singer was Lanny Ross until recently. I have also rediscovered his voice and him, now. Pity he isn't alive to see that his work is still appreciated. This song would be my ultimate favourite, I can't hear it enough.
Funny, I thought I was showing signs of age when I rediscovered Lanny Ross's voice and style. You forget so much! I wasn't about to admit to it until I read your post and realise my marbles are still OK.
I cannot get over how beautiful this is. Magnificent performance of a wonderful song. Serendipity led me here from listening to different versions of " Stay As Sweet As You Are " on a site called second hand songs. I hadn't ever heard of him before but Lanny's version was the first and best and now here I am heartstrings tugged again 💕💕💕
Lanny Ross was a graduate of Yale, where he was Skull and Bones, and Columbia's Law School. He also studied vocal music at Juilliard. Quite the pedigree
@@petertaylor3600 I'm currently attending the American Traditions vocal competition in Savannah GA. Contestants can sing in many genres, from folk to opera. The vocal training of these young singers is exceptional. But the entire audience is 50+. Therein lies the challenge.
@@LakeConstan At 50+ they probably hunger for a well trained singing voice with all the stuff around. He could project it to the bleachers, too, when he got going. Even when I was a child I loved his voice. You wouldn't think kids would notice, would you? BTW Best of luck with that comp.
@DavidWDNO I'm a super with Nashville Opera ( we've used some of your sets). I've loved Stage Door Canteen for years. This song is so lovely. - Michael

I just bought stage door canteen at my local dollar store for about 60 cents. It's so cool! What beautiful music back then. As tough as things were, I wish I had lived then.
You wouldn't have been happy if you were alive then when it was more uncertain than ever since, and that someone wouldn't be coming home. For civilians life was a never ending search for essentials like food and clothing. If you lived in the UK, you faced bombs. Not as magical as you might think.

It is. In fact the whole film was. Not in a silly way, either. It conveyed the feeling ab out the war, just as that song and Ross's voice.
It showed exactly how it was. The words he sings as well. Two lovers on a date, with the boy just about to leave for O/S. There was always the risk that it was for the last time and he would be killed. So, he was comforting her with something to ease the pain.

Gullivers Travels was a brilliant piece of art. Made in opposition to Walt Disney at the time. Music in it was sublime. I wish badly to see it again.

A properly trained voice, something we just don't seem to hear now. Out of fashion, simply.

A pair of little people
Their biggest moment comes
She says "Goodbye,"

In dreams we'll always be together
Beneath the moonlit sky
We mustn't

My father was also named after him (in 1934).
Was your poor father, therefore called Lancelot? That's a lot to live up to.

it must have been very painful for wives and girlfriends that their men promised to come back but wasn’t able to return home 😢
And when their men promised to return and didn't, it was simply that, having been killed in action, they couldn't. That was more than painful.
PS: However.....don't lose sight of the fact that life isn't always pretty and sometimes, when they returned it was with another woman. In Australia, the War Brides would be brought to the US for somebody to marry. They got there and found he was already married.
My brother is also named after him
+Debra Prosch ....the unfortunate man's full name was Lancelot. Did your brother get that one?
My grandpa was named after him, born in 1943. :)
Damn i'm handsome
+Lanny Ross .....yes and that's a good, healthy pair of lungs, too. Wow! And dammit, you were gorgeous even if you knew it. Pity you died so long ago.
