  • Yes, you can cut the flower stem from a Venus Flytrap and get new plants from that stem.
Plants grown from tissue (flower stem or leaf pulling) will create a plant of the same type as the parent plant. Plants grown from seeds may not have the same characteristics and are not called the same name as the parent plant.
Update 9-27-2022, very few of my cuttings made it, I think it was mostly poor watering that made the cuttings rot without producing the plants. The ones that did take and start new plants look great. I think next year, I will try sphagnum in place of peat.

The only time I've ever got a stem propagation (in dozens of attempts) is from a flower end laying horizontally in long fiber sphagnum. But from this 1” long cutting, I also got growth from the cut end too.

It is not 100%. The LFS may be a better starting media than peat. Try a longer piece, 1-1/2 to 2". It will probably make a growth start more often than a short piece.

@@donschiller4227 A longer clipping makes sense. After all, photosynthesis still needs to occur so the clipping can produce the sugars it needs for any growth. I think that's why clipping that include the flower buds seem to survive longer: there are more cells to carry out photosynthesis. So if you start with a longer clipping, theoretically that means you have more cells that can still do photosynthesis and provide energy for any propagation growth. I'll have to give this a try the next I try a flower stalk propagation.

@@DG-iw3yw That is a great thought. I wonder if there is a way to improve the stem cuttings by increasing those (or some)? Too bad the plant only flowers once a year, I would love to try more experimentation. Maybe soaking in a rooting hormone or a maxsea solution before placing in the growing media.

How long will it stay under lights? When will it go outside? The little spout that is.

The plant will be out (weather permitting) about a month after I see good traps. At that point I know it is a good grower. It is still slow acclimating to the sun.

nice video. question sir. is there a drainage holes on it?

No. I keep the media moist. There is no need for a drain hole.

It takes so much time, i'm waiting for a month now and still nothing coming out of the leaf pullings :c

When you do leaf pullings, make sure you have some white from the rhizome or corm. That is the growth point.

    Can't Rootone?

I am doing an experiment with a rooting hormone to see if it makes any difference.
