  • @ilovelamp61
    @ilovelamp61 4 месяца назад +6

    I've said for years, as a dirt bike guy who has done some pretty gnarly stuff in the woods, motocross tracks, and the hills, that downhill MTB guys are certified badasses! There are a lot of things that I have done and would try to do as far as action sports go, but MTB isn't one of them. My utmost respect is given to those guys for doing the gnarliest stuff possible!

    • @pro_grapist
      @pro_grapist 4 месяца назад +1

      Why MTB isn't one of them? I fully agree that MTB guys are badass, but so are dirt bike guys, it's not like MTB is more dangerous, if anything it's the opposite.

    • @C_R_O_M________
      @C_R_O_M________ 4 месяца назад

      @@pro_grapist I don't see how dirt biking is more dangerous than this. Enduro certainly isn't and once you get to know how to jump a specific MX track it's far safer than this crazy downhill course.

    • @pro_grapist
      @pro_grapist 4 месяца назад

      @@C_R_O_M________ Oh come on, dirt bikes are inherently more dangerous just because they are capable of much higher speeds, much faster acceleration, 10x weight of a mountain bike thus more inertia and possibly bigger consequences if it ends up on top of you. There's a reason why dirt bike helmets are bigger, thicker and heavier than downhill ones, or why mtb shoes are essentially just sneakers with some extra features and dirt bike boots are made from hard plastic with other very thick materials, weigh a ton and feels like leg casts.
      Also, Hardline is one of the gnarliest things you can do on a mountain bike, it's only fair to compare it to the gnarliest things people do on dirt bikes, like stuff that FMX or freeride guys do, that Hardline road gap does not look that massive when compared to some of the jumps those guys do.
      Knowing how to jump a specific track makes it relatively safer, but so does learning to ride and jump the Hardline or any other downhill course.
      And you don't need Hardline level of crazy track to kill yourself on a dirt bike, any noob can just twist the throttle, get to 100km/h on winding forest road in few seconds and splatter himself into a tree.
      I'm not trying to start a dirt bikes vs mtb argument here, I love both, but objectively speaking dirt bikes are more dangerous.

    • @C_R_O_M________
      @C_R_O_M________ 4 месяца назад

      @@pro_grapist All the dirt bikers I know (and know a few including myself - many of them top racers) have fewer injuries than the crowd of downhill riders who are all broken from head to toe.
      In fact my only severe injuries on two wheels came on a mountain bike.
      Dirt bikes are faster but more predictable and the stats that suggest that more injuries are sustained on dirt bikes is from MX tracks which are indeed very dangerous.
      Moreover, more people ride dirt bikes than attempt to ride the downhill craziness.
      Hard enduro riders such as myself (an amateur) are focusing on very slow riding drills to improve technique and most injuries are minor.
      Downhill is less predictable, you are more exposed to unpredictability than the average dirtbiker.
      Downhill is by design dangerous and gnarly.
      Dirt biking could become so but in most cases it's just isn't.
      I mean, yesterday I watched the whole 4 hours of the Erzberg and didn't notice one single injury. A downhill race wouldn't be the same.
      Even 2 time Ertzberg winner Jonny Walker, said that when he rode the hardline downhill track it was the scariest thing he ever did in his life. That should give you a good reference point for the comparison.
      P.S. Dirt bikers wear boots because they could get into situations where a high boot could save your leg from puncture from a sticking branch, it protects you when the heavy bike lands on top of you whereas downhill riders can't wear those because they must pedal as well (which makes it even more crazy and dangerous).
      We also wear better helmets because, yes, of higher speeds but also because of flinging rocks from the motorcycle in front of us. Of course, there are variants of dirt biking that are very dangerous but that's just a small portion of dirt biking. In comparison all downhill races are extremely dangerous.

    • @pro_grapist
      @pro_grapist 4 месяца назад

      @@C_R_O_M________ I think that if we are comparing the most dangerous discipline of mtb, we should compare it to most dangerous disciplines of dirt biking aswell. Yes, hard enduro is relatively safe because of slower speeds, but mx, sx, crosscountry/enduro are often very fast and dangerous. Hard enduro or just some average Joe trail riding should be compared to something like xc mtb riding, which is really not very dangerous at all, relatively speaking.
      Johny Walker is a hard enduro rider, big jumps is not really his thing so it's understandable that it was scary, and yet came there and fucking smashed it on his dirt bike without many issues 😄
      Also I disagree that dirt bikes are more predictable, having so much power at the rear wheel weird shit can happen, for example the rear wheel might lift off the ground going over a bump, land at a shitty angle with good traction and, if it's on too much throttle you can just get launched off the bike, stuff like that.

      It is slower to tip side to side for sure. And you don't have nearly as much rear brake control with a boot and your foot.
