  • Dr Fiona Kumfor is a Clinical Neuropsychologist and Senior Research Fellow at the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney.
    She is also an NHMRC-ARC Dementia Research Development Fellow.
    Here she discusses what social cognition is, and how it changes in Frontotemporal Dementia.
    This presentation is part of the 2019 Frontier FTD Information and Support Day which is held annually at the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney.

    Frontier is a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary research clinic that investigates frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in collaboration with ForeFront Ageing and Neurodegeneration. FTD is Australia’s second most common degenerative disease that causes dementia in younger adults. As the first ever research group to concentrate on FTD in Australia, Frontier is dedicated to identifying better ways to diagnose FTD, finding the cause and developing effective treatments for the condition.

    Have they made progress? My sister was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 64. She never had any symptoms her whole life. Her psychiatrist says he doesn’t see any classic signs of dementia. I’m ripping my hair out dealing with this. I’ve done so much research and I would be willing to bet my last dollar that she has dementia, and this is the kind. I feel the health system has failed her. 😢
