    2024 is coming to a close, and it’s time to prepare the fields for next year’s growing season! Join Joaquim as he fires up his trusty Ford tractor to get the land ready for planting oats and rye-essential crops to feed his hardworking flock of dairy sheep.
    This year has been full of challenges on the farm, from unpredictable weather to equipment breakdowns, but we’re pushing through and getting ready for an even better 2025. In this video, you’ll see the process of planting these vital cereal crops and get a glimpse into the daily trials and triumphs of Portugal Farm Life.
    Thank you for following our journey-don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more updates from the farm. Here’s to another year of work, growth, and adventure! ❤

But you know what Joaquim was planting, so, just check on the internet when they have to be planted but as you said, he wouldn't be waisting seeds and he knows what he's doing and im sure is not the first time is doing it. It is lovely to see. Quite a difference with the modern machines that have computers and GPS. And the modern machines that are used for seeding split the soil, then the seed is planted at exactly the right depth, and then the soil is getting pushed over the seed, and compacted all in one go with a single machine. And all the seeds are planted at the exact same distance from each other. Anyway, as always thanks for sharing. 👍

    Cereal Rye produces more biomass above the ground, so also more and higher Green "leaves".
    Ryegrass goes deeper into the ground, so deeper roots. What it both does, apart from feeding the animals, is keeping the soil together. So prevent erosion. The Ryegrass goes deep into the layers of the soil, and so it brings the nutrients to the top layer.
    (also dandelions do exactly that, but they go a bit deeper even, when you have dandelions in your garden, it means the spot is very poor in nutrients in the top layer).

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  21 день назад +2

      Great question, after 5 years here I think that these would be on top of my list:
      Automated Irrigation System: This is essential for summer, ensuring veggies and plants get the water they need without the constant manual effort.
      High-Quality Pruning Equipment: A good set of tools like secateurs, electric pruners, and mini chainsaws is invaluable for maintaining grapevines and fruit trees, especially in the winter.
      Ride-On Mower or Compact Tractor: Perfect for keeping vegetation under control around the farm and handling those larger maintenance tasks.
      High-Quality Strimmer or Push Lawn Mower: For the areas the tractor can’t reach, having reliable equipment to cut grass and manage overgrowth is a must before the summer heat.
      4x4 Vehicle with a Large Load Bed: Ideal for transporting supplies, tools, or even crops to and from the farm all year round.
      Happy new years to you guy too!❤️👍

    Interesting. Old cats often get overactive thyroids, which makes them very jumpy and thin, so maybe you should ask the vet to do a blood test.
    Also ryegrass is a sort of tufted grass - Lolium - whereas the cereal rye is Secale cereale, and related to wheat and barley. Not sure which he would have planted in your field. Possibly the cereal.

    don't know that bird of prey specifically, because it's too far away (for me) 🐦. but hawks/kites/eagles/buzzards are all within one family [Accipitridae]. I happen to look into it last couple of weeks, getting very confused about it 😮.
    since DNA profiling is possible the families of birds have been much more divided in specific genera of Latin names, but the English names stayed the same. so there is no difference other then an original English name is kept, but some changed from one genus to another (some even another families). Within one genus, one species is a hawk, another species a kite..... very confusing.
    great to see them though. lovely video.

    what are the requirements to live in portugal all year? can you just buy a house and live there?

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  21 день назад

      Portugal is part of the EU, so if you have an EU passport, you can live and work here without needing a visa or residency permit.
      If you're from a country outside the EU, you can visit as a tourist for a limited time (usually up to 90 days within a 180-day period for most countries). However, if you want to live in Portugal year-round or work here, you’ll need a visa that allows residency.
      There are several visa options depending on your situation-for example, a D7 visa for passive income/retirement, a work visa, or a Golden Visa for property investment. I recommend looking up the specific visa requirements for your country and consulting the Portuguese immigration website or an immigration expert for detailed guidance!
