    I've been debating this very argument for decades. Well worth it. "Across that 16th note groove, different parts of the orchestration--the guitar, the bass, the horns, the vocals--they're popping up in different parts of the 16th-note groove..." Right there. That's Funk. After they hit the one, given a measure of music in a funk song, every instrument has its own place within the bar, and rarely does one instrument block another. The polyrhythmic possibilities of that kind of composing are vast. "In Time" by Sly is the perfect demonstration of that, as are many others of his. To contrast, in Rock music, usually the guitars, bass, and drums are all coming down on the same places within a measure.

    I personally divide funk into PRIMARY CHARACTERISTICS and SECONDARY CHARACTERISTICS
    PRIMARY: (things that are always there)
    Intense and interlocking Groove, focus on Rhythm (especially 16th note rhythm), Use Of Space and Syncopation, and almost everything you mentioned in the video
    SECONDARY: (not required- many funk songs have these characteristics, but not all)
    Slap Bass, slow tempo (I have heard faster tempos in funk before), chord vamps, wah effect, improvisation, rhythmic ghost notes on guitar, MELODIC BASSLINES, swung rhythms, no fills, ET CETERA.

    Nice! This right here is without a doubt funk & very funky. Thanks Jonathan for covering this. And I hope I didn’t come off too argumentative, but I was bit annoyed at what I thought was a mislabel. But respect to you, you’re very talented, and I look forward to learning more from you.

      what you are playing is funk but I separate the history of funk into 3 periods : 60's early 70's funk ( slow gritty funk like you play) ; late 70's Parliament era funk ; and 80's synth funk…………….……………………………………………..80's synth funk proves that funk can be fast

    • @robinsss
      @robinsss 5 лет назад +1

      what did funk musicians in 2000 contribute that was new?…………….……………………………………...any funk made in 2000 falls into one of the three categories that I mentioned...………………………………………………………………………..Uptown funk and Bruno mars other song are both 80's synth funk...………………………………………...the music in this video is early 70's funk...………………………………………….gritty

    • @robinsss
      @robinsss 5 лет назад +1

      the history of this genre of music , in my opinion, can be clearly cut into three different sub genres with nearly no blur between them…………….……………………………..when I attach a sub genre to a period it doesn't mean that there were no exceptions...…………………………………………………………...it means that that sub genre I have associated with that period dominated that period completely…………….………………………………………….the early 70's was dominated by slow gritty funk...………………………………………………………...after today I might add a 4th category :60's funk which was mostly up tempo ………………………………………………………….in the early 70's the beat slowed down and most funk was slow and gritty…………….………………………………………………by the late 70's the beat had clearly increase because of pressure from disco…………….……………………………………………….if you disagree with my categorizations then tell me specifically why

    Funky vs Funky has been a stickler for me for decades. In the 90's there was lots of break beat that was funky, and then there was "Funky House" which wasn't even funky, nothing funky about it. Just watched a blind white piano player with Funk in the youtube video. Nothing funky about his playing, couldn't see it as even funky. Then I noticed the same guy had a rhodes video, checked it out, and damn that man can groove, and has the funk, Strange haw even people who know their stuff, can liberally throw 'Funk' around as a term in places it doesn't belong.

    I like your vids. Great content. 3 main points.
    1- Perhaps something most won't mention, (or don't know) is the culture of "Funk." Funk isn't something that is "played." It isn't "music." It's a lifestyle. James Brown was the first to record it but it existed before he recorded it, but the groove (and all aspects) had already existed.. For example, anyone can follow a recipe but that doesn't mean you can cook in that style.
    2- The vocals / lyrics. Unlike "soul", Funk has a strong rhythmic hook. Giving the song intent.
    3- The industry capitalized on the style just to corner their market... as every style has done.
    This is what has created most of the confusion between soul, R&B, funk, blues, etc... It removed from the culture or standardized and then lost.

    Great presentation as always! Except ... it took me more than two hours to get through this one. I had to look up "funk" within the first few seconds - after wiki, various articles, and listening to about thirty top funk hits, plus a really long article about James Brown and how he evolved in his musical expression - I was finally able to get back to your "show" - now already spending more than an hour and 30 seconds (you have the smaller portion of that time). I think it is great that you make the effort to explain the concept and elements behind the music. I think when we re-visit your "stuff" we will have a better appreciation for all the little details that we can now observe, that perhaps we had taken for granted the first few times through. Really enjoyed your demonstration of "assembly" - for us kinesthetic learners - that was great fun and informative. Thank you again for you time and knowledge and willingness to share. Great way to understand music - listen to others.

    I like the way you break this down, particularly the way you dissect funk into those 3 parts. In my opinion the example piece you put together sounds a bit too busy though - I think another integral part of funk is using space/silence/rests as an instrument too, it lets the bits you do play really breathe and dance and pop

    In time, by Sly and the Family Stone, however it was probably mostly Sly at that time. The song is from 1974. It really is a great one where every instrument is interlocking. The horns, drums, bass and organ interact so well. When I listened to it for the first time, it blew my mind and I put it on repeat for the whole day. It feels so sloppy and tight at the same time. I really think it is the best thing I've ever heard.

    Pino Presti's "Funky Bump": not an american funk classic, but I think it deserves to be in a great funk tracks list. Three chords, awesome bass that puts the stress on the 1, the hammond is killer and it's probably no faster than 105. Or maybe I'm wrong and it's just funky, as the name of the tune states.

      Here's weighing in with two bands, two songs and similar bass lines (minus the b sections). The first is "Maze featuring Frankie Beverly". Maze is a legendary, legendary band many may not have heard of. They remind me of the legendary British band called "Squeeze" who eluded many people until much later. Maze can either be a funk band or a funky RnB/Soul band. Their live shows seriously attest to that. They still draw a crowd when they perform. My submission for their funk or funky song is "Back in stride again". This song can be a funk song or a funky tune. Your call. I hope it's okay to include a link. ruclips.net/video/XAPkAdXuPnI/видео.html.
      Frankie Beverly was supposed to be as "big" as Marvin Gaye and his voice was referred to as "silky soul".
      The second band I'd like to submit is another legendary band that fits almost the same bill. Their soul versus funk quotient may be up for debate (I say it leans more funky as opposed to funk) but what isn't up for debate is their funky soul sound. The name of this band is LTD and one of the funky songs they are also famous for is "Every time I turn around".
      ruclips.net/video/uqacuYcKV-c/видео.html
      Incidentally, LTD (the band) is also famous for unwittingly launching the solo career of (at the time, their replacement singer), Jeffrey Osbourne who ironically, went on to write and perform the dreamy balled "On the Wings of Love" that became a soap opera staple and eclipsed "Every time I turn around" which until then had been the biggest hit of his career.

    Ok. Tempo has fuck all to do with if it's funk or not. There are alot of bands (for instance) who claim to be Funk bands, when in actuality have no funky feel what-so-ever. I would regaurd most anything that is four to the floor as not being funk. I would call it disco based, (which of course is an offshoot of funk). I would go as far to say that Disco is to Funk, what Glenn Miller is to Jazz. After a long lifetime listening to "Funk", I have come to the conclusion that I like stuff that is Funky, which in the so called Funk genre I find most bands to be utterly utterly lacking. O.K Funk is

    I’m sure Ross Bolton would disagree about what tempo funk should be. I say if you clap your hands, it’s R&B. If you clap and grind your ass it’s funk.

      Such a great band - and that keyboard player!!! If anyone gets the chance to see The Motet live -- they put on a great live show too. I've seen them twice, and will probably catch them any time they come through town...

    Sticky Wicket, because it's Al Jarreau, Jay Graydon, Greg Phillinganes, Jerry Hey. How funkier can you get?!? Keep up the good work!!!
