    People really need to learn the difference between nationality and ethnicity before taking these tests.

      NadinaStryhn,
      I agree with your point about race and ethnicity.
      It would be great if more people knew that ethnicity is not a race. Ethnicity and race are two different things.

      Natalya Myronyak I am not Greek, but I suppose it refers to a tradition to throw plates on the ground on holidays/fests (special plates, not the once they serve food in of course haha). You can see the Wikipedia article “Plate smashing” for more info

      @eftychiakourempana7812 6 лет назад +74

      I am Greek and every time I hear this I want to shake my head - we invented democracy and people associate us with plate smashing :-(
      it's a custom that developed here in Greece when tourism began to pick up in the 60s and 70s and rich people came to the Greek islands. To entertain them (and make them part with more of their money) we took a very simple and economical wedding tradition and we simply exaggerated. And we got stuck with it!

    • @nataliyamyronyak6902
      @nataliyamyronyak6902 6 лет назад +5

      Thanks)
      Never actually heard of such a tradition. That's kind of interesting because in Ukraine we don't smash plates intentionally but if that happens we always say something like "that's for happiness".

She's wearing an over sized jumper that many people from all over the word wear (its fashion) and a headscarf which is worn for modesty and to show our devotion to god. In so many DNA test videos people have no idea what Iberian and Ashkenazi mean, it blows my mind. And people always think certain things are going to come up. I watched one video where this guy was shocked because it didn’t say Latino like.... what would that even be. Then he was confused about why it said Iberian and Native American lol. I saw another where a guy expected his to say African-American. It genuinely makes me sad how ignorant people are when it comes to stuff like this

      So true, the levels of both ignorance and stupidity, which of course are not the same thing, about geography and ethnicity are amazing. It's clear that the most basic terms and concepts are never mentioned at home or at school.

    • @terrybaby6146
      @terrybaby6146 6 лет назад +21

      Sadly, in so many cases the old joke applies: .Q. What is the difference between ignorance and apathy? A. I don't know and I don't care.

    • @terrybaby6146
      @terrybaby6146 6 лет назад +11

      Michele Hanlon: I was actually replying to the first poster. Otherwise, I would have specified a person.
      I'm sorry my response causes you to feel apathetic - I almost feel something in response. (Nah, I don't - my apathy towards this entire subject is growing, I'm afraid).
      I don't think I implied the above couple were stupid. It would ill behove me to do so, I'm afraid. Infact,where did I even use the word "stupid"? However, I will say that they are ignorant, as in not knowing where Iberia is - and then flaunting this ignorance with a statement along the lines of there is an airline called Iberia. The apathy comes into play with their raucous screeches of mirth, without giving the least thought to using their phone to google.
      Perhaps they did google: my interest disappeared before the halfway mark. Oh, and by the way, whilst they may not be stupid, they are exhibiting stupidity.

      easy way I think she looks amazing, it’s a matter of opinion. Dina is not forcing you to like her style or even watch her videos. If you don’t like her please leave, because it’s kinda embarrassing that your watching her videos just so that you can hate on her. Also just because Dina is half Egyptian doesn’t mean she knows the full history of her country. I’m from Sri Lanka and I don’t know everything to do with my country’s history. This doesn’t make me or Dina uneducated. In fact, the only person uneducated here is you, did your mama not teach you manners?

Oh, you said it's because "they pretend to be superior with their halloween witch costume, and try to pretend they are above the culture they live in". What is it that she's done to pretend she's above the culture she lives in? BE half British (her mom is full white British)? Speak English? Make RUclips videos? Take a DNA test like countless other Western RUclipsrs? All seem pretty standard British cultural things to do. Oh but her witch costume! For someone calling her uneducated it's funny that you spelled martian wrong, doubly so because you're upset at her not fitting in with European culture. So how about you educate yourself on your own language?

    No Abla, your Egyptian side is represented by both the ME + NA components and the Greek component is actually your so-called Turkish ancestry because Anatolia was inhabited by many ethnicities and people and that Turkish grandparent you might had was actually Greek who assimilated into Ottoman/Turkish culture (language and religion) whether forcefully or not and then migrated to Egypt sometime in the last 200 years.

      I read a comment like yours, and it reminds me that there is hope for people. What people don't recognise is that these DNA tests, besides being very flawed, also rely on very Eurocentric categories and groupings of people. And that in fact, the rest of the world enjoyed a much more cosmopolitan mix. What's more disturbing is how little value seemingly educated Muslims place in respecting ethnic and cultural heritage, when it is a specific commandment in the religion.

      Julia Gardner yeah you inherit from both your parents. But you don’t inherit everything. Which means that you inherit some things, and some things you don’t. Your siblings could have a dna part you don’t have. And you can also inherit som dna parts from other people in your family tree.

    • @DieAlteistwiederda
      @DieAlteistwiederda 6 лет назад +19

      Julia Gardner the 50/50 split is a myth. You only get around 50% from each parent but you can also get closer to 40% from one parent and 60% from the other one. There is also a chance that you get a lot from your grandparents and Egypt is super mixed anyway. My two older siblings and I are all from the same parents and we still had very different results. I have more from our dad's side of the family while our brother(funny enough the middle child)is the almost equally 50/50 child and my sister has more traits from our mothers side of the family. So technically I'm a little more related to my older brother than to my older sister.

    What so surprising in this? Egypt had gone through too many rulers from different parts of the world, throughout history, and before Islam lots of Arabic tribes had ancestry back to the East Mediterranean, Even some Egyptian queens like Cleopatra was originally Greek, & so some Lebanese & Palestinean regions. Some Yamani tribes who spread all over the Arabian peninsula were Jews, so the painful reality is with all our ethnic, cultural & political differences we are the same people.

    • @nadiasubri7426

      I can't see how the incident of( burning Christians) related to our subject. However, unfortunately most of religions have bloody history between one another, and what happened later to Jews on the hands of extreme Catholics and later Hitler are other examples of religious extremism throughout history, and nowadays we have some extremists among all religions unfortunately.

      Cleopatra was Ptolemaios (macedonian, descendants of one of Alexander’s generals). This was actually painful to watch, “Iberia is a country” *facepalm*....”what is ashkenazi babes”. The spanish/arab mix is easy to explain and the ashkenazi 1% i think it’s how they explain the “neanderthal” dna, idk if it’s actually jewish

    • @Thessaloz
      @Thessaloz 6 лет назад +8

      @Mini Me well he said the same thing, actually if you want to be even more specific they was peloponnesians (since Ptolemy and all Macedonian nobles claimed descent from Argead dynasty in Peloponnesus).
      Also its really easy to be 1% jewish since they live all around the west, if one of your grand-grand parents had 1 half-jew in their genealogical tree, its enough to be 1% jewish.

    • @minime7375
      @minime7375 6 лет назад

      Thessaloz George being very much into anthropology i m fascinated by these dna tests videos and in one of them a scientist explained how that 1% ashkenazi jewish appears in the majority of people of european descent and not in people of pure african descent. I’m not sure it’s neanderthal (just an unverified theory) but europeans seem to have some early human dna, either it’s neanderthal or another hominid idk and this geneticist said they identify it in test results as “ashkenazi jewish” (which is a generic name for european jews)

    • @mchanel.
      @mchanel. 6 лет назад +13

      Arbn dna doesn’t work that way lol , imagine your grandfather is Chinese, it would mean you’d be 1/4 Chinese right? That’s 25% but dna isn’t actually broken in to half like they teach us ( you’ll find out after a little bit of research ) the max percentage you could have is 25% Chinese but it could also be that you only got a small amount of dna from your grandfather so it could also be 18% or more/less.
      It all depends on what you’ve got from your ancestors

      The tests show how much you have in YOUR DNA, your dad could be 100% British and your mom 100% italian but in your results show 72% british or something. It doesn't show the DNA of your ancestors

    • @attrapehareng
      @attrapehareng 6 лет назад

      If you're 37% Polish and it's from your mom then it means she's 74% Polish... I'm pretty most Polish are no more than 74% Polish in their DNA... lot of Russian, German, Other eastern european! It's very well possible that your mom and all her ancestor of the past 200 years are born in Poland and yet due to massive influx of Russian/German/... DNA in the past they all had on average 25% of non-Polish DNA!

    • @attrapehareng
      @attrapehareng 6 лет назад

      @ENZO if your dad is 100% british and your mom 100% Italian then you'll be 50% british and 50% Italian... maybe 51/49 due to randomness but never 72% British!
      If your mom makes a DNA test and it shows that she's 95% Italian for example, then you should be at least ~45% italian, if you're not then it's not your mom!

    • @ENZOxDV9
      @ENZOxDV9 6 лет назад

      P V I'm just saying a lot of people think you'll get exactly half from mom and dad when in reality it could go either way, like I've seen some vids where they say they have some of a particular ethnicity but it doesn't show up on the results and they think they've been lied to their whole life. In reality it just didn't show up in their DNA

    • @attrapehareng
      @attrapehareng 6 лет назад

      @ENZO You got exactly 50% from your mom and 50% from your dad. If one ethnicity doesn't show up in your results it's either because the test was inaccurate (yet it happens less and less as they gather more and more data) or that you don't have any ancestors from that ethnicity!
      If you have one grand parent who was 100% Middle Eastern for example and you don't have any middle eastern DNA then your grand parent is not yours, there's no way around it, DNA doesn't lie! The innacuracies and possible errors are extremely low!

  • @bambinal1437
    @bambinal1437 6 лет назад +58

    Besides being European, I'm like 20% Iberian too. Spain, Portugal and Northern Africa. Try to remember, we are all mixed! Each person is given DNA and not all DNA is received into us from our Parents! I never knew this. So, they can be 75% English but you may only receive 10%, or vice versa! I think it's strange because my Mom got 15% Cherokee and I got 0% but I got Yakut (Northern Siberia-Eurasian)!! And my Mother & Father has zero. So where did that come from?....hummm Mom? LOL But I also show 52% Neanderthal variants of those tested so far. DNA is weird and most of us are just a mash-up of a bunch of different races! We truly are the world. :)

    Well your last name, Torkia should give you some indication. When the Ottomans ruled Egypt, there was heavy mixing between them, the Armenians, the Greeks, Russians, Romans and Copts in the north. Most of the Arabs were pushed southward and then they created a caste system. People were given last names based upon what they were classed as, Torkia or Turki if they were Turks, Al-Arabi if they were Arabs.
    Just by your name it is clear that you are not an Arab, even if you know some. Instead the Turks, Crusaders and others that mixed in the north are where you came from.

      These tests show what's in your DNA. If some people move to Egypt from Syria for example and don't reproduce with locals, then even after few generations of living in Egypt (and being egyptian), they will still not have any Egyptian DNA!

      Or maybe you don't betch!

    • @fibienn250
      @fibienn250 6 лет назад +1

      RosesOfGold The problem is that what most people know about DNA is based on what is taught in schools. But what is taught is very basic. eg You get one eye colour gene from each parent, say blue and brown and brown is the more dominant, so that’s the colour your eyes are. That’s true but in reality it’s way more complex than that. You actually have a number of genes that affect eye colour and you don’t necessarily inherit an equal share of those genes from each of your parents and they can combine in different ways. That’s why full siblings can look so different from each other.
      The thing about these tests though, is that they only compare some of your DNA strands. That’s why people get different results from different tests. It’s not a mistake, they’re just comparing different Dna strands. That means that you can still be 70% something but the genes they happen to test might be the ones that don’t come from that 70%.

      On average, self reported blacks in American have 20% "white" admixture. It would be very rare for an individual with 100% African ancestry to be commenting on this platform and to have participated in a commercial genetic testing service.
      Also, Mike C, if you're Sardinian you're genetically much closer to being African than you are to being Northern Italian. Just because the population references your genetic testing service used - to spit a result back at you - didn't say African doesn't mean much. The actual genetics of the population you're from is pretty obscure.

    Awesome video guys. Love the banter too lol. I would have never guessed 75% European.
    With your Egyptian results (or lack there of) it shouldn’t worry you too much as although your family’s most likely been there for centuries, the indigenous peoples, the Nubians, Sudanese migrant Medjay (ethnic group) and other Nilotic African Ethnic Groups stretches back thousands of years beyond modern history so with all the invasions/conquests from Europe, Asia and the Middle East over that time, it’d be a lot harder for a DNA test to pick up an accurate indigenous result which is probably why it didn’t show up in this specific test you ran 👍🏾.

    • @sealleyne3555

      Mr Romelle. When the Mamluks were kicked out of Turkey/Turkiye, then ended up in Alexandria, Egypt and had their own community. The Mamluks were often Christian slaves who sought conversion as a way top serve their oppressor (as if they had a choice). Ethnically, some of these were of Albanian background along with fellow Greek and perhaps Ukranian and Eastern European followers. It makes sense that depending on one's place of birth in Egypt, they would either show the 'foreign' contribution or the Nubian/Sudanese connection, or the expression of both. So when Arabs sign the bravery of Antar (hero of the Arabs) they sing truth. Look at Sadat, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and other Egyptians as a multiethnic society. Islam as a unifier is often overrated, at best. All good men are just that...

    As someone who is really into genealogy I don't think MyHeritage was the best choice. They're quite well known for giving really wrong and strange results (as they also did to me). As you're part North African, you should have gone with 23andMe as they give the most accurate results for Africans. Ancestry would have been a better choice regarding your English side.

    • @anisaali8252
      @anisaali8252 6 лет назад +1

      23&Me recently updated their website. They go into specific countries as opposed to simply the region! They narrowed my 49.2% East African to Somali in particular recently which is very accurate.

    • @TrinhNguyen-sh4fj
      @TrinhNguyen-sh4fj 6 лет назад +1

      Anisa Sorry but their update to me was BS and not truly accurate. Where did they suddenly get so much data in just a few months (I did my test just a few months prior to their soul called update) to have these updates? Therefore, they are not truly accurate.

    • @AiriinSuki
      @AiriinSuki 6 лет назад

      I noticed myheritage is very accurate in Asian regions, but their precentages are very off. I knew that when i went in, but I just wanted to know my Asian heritage and it was the cheapest in my country. Thought I was indonesian, but nope Chinese. (it makes much more sense being chinese instead of indonesian)
      For the accurate precentages I think I will do a 23andme in the future.

    • @anisaali8252
      @anisaali8252 6 лет назад

      @Trinh Nguyen That may be the case for you but not for me. i am half Somali from my father and 49.0% Somali sounds pretty accurate as we have zero known admixture even a couple generations back. My mothers side was also accurate and correlated fairly with results from Ancestry.
      The updates and new data was put together over an extended period of time, it wasn't magically created. Can't say much for what type of results Asians receive with 23andMe but for Africans it is another story.

      Idk if someone of my ancestors was an European but my grandpa had a very light skin and green eyes but that's not rare in Afghanistan.
      I'm 79% central Asian (Persian, Afghan) 18% European and 3% other ethnicities.

      No. North Africa is North Africa. Maghrebi Berber area conquered by Arabs, and Arabized, but not actually Arabs historically. Only maybe Egypt is both North African and Middle or Near East. But definitely NOT all of North Africa. Even Egypt is only 15% or 20% Arab, although I realize that when the Copts lost their Christian faith and their Egyptian language to Islam and Arabic, they gradually became known as "Arabs." But their DNA would not show up as Middle Eastern, or not heavily so.
