I gotta believe that when DesFit and DC Rainmaker speak with each other at full speed, they can fit three hours of conversation into just 45 minutes. 😂
😂 so true. We don’t talk fast, we’re just “being efficient with your time”
@@DesFit I 100% appreciate that.
Just checked my settings. Thought I was at 1.25.
😂
Read this before watching the video and all I could think about was how fast he talks! Fast and clear though so not a compliant 👍
Wow, thank you so much for this quick comparison, it really does justify my AW Ultra purchase. I'm switching from a Garmin Instinct 2 which I had for it value, but I really miss having an AW for its smartwatch features. Great to see that I can get all the features I would miss from Garmin if I'm willing to download some apps (and pay for subscriptions) as well as give up a couple of sensors/data at certain times in order to extend the battery life to match. I really was considering an Epix 2 but now I'm truly sold on the AW Ultra. It meets all my needs and most of my wants. Thanks again!!
Good comparison. I’m sure Apple looked at Garmin for inspiration for the Ultra. I am sure they looked at the market in general. It sounds like for a first try, Apple did a decent job. As with everything, it’ll improve over time. I have a little doubt the Ultra will outsell the entire sports watch market because of Apple’s cachet as well as the features it brings from the standard version of it.
I must say this … u r by far the most fluent content provider I have come across .. I have listened to hundreds of them with unnecessary emotions, emphasis , modulations , personal influence, and very low on actual content ( except few) what’s ur USP is that - ur flow and to the point no nonsense content .. I am in total sync and u are going to have a long long career with millions of followers . Great stuff ! Keep it coming
Thank you so much! I just try to put in pertinent information that I feel can benefit viewers.
I love the little digs you and Ray make during your videos. Keep them coming!
Very interesting and informative video, you've done an incredibly deep job. IMHO, it's strange to choose between Apple Watch and Garmin, because Garmin has a lot of experience in producing professional equipment for sports, outdoor activities and navigation, so they understand all the technologies and needs of sportsmen. Apple Watch, even Ultra, for me is more about everyday usage as smart watch + a little more sport functions.
I've had Garmin gadgets for a while now. Starting with my cycling computer 820 to the 830. Then I bought the forerunner 245 for a decent price and fell in love with the features. Subsequently I purchased the forerunner 945 which I currently have. I cannot speak for the Apple Watch since I've never had one but I do have apple products. However, when it comes to fitness related stuff I definitely choose Garmin. They are durable, specially for military stuff and day to day usage. Battery life is always amazing, not only it charges in less than 30 mins but it lasts for multiple days.
And it's the right choice. Apple has good apps and they work fast, but everything is scattered in different places. The watch is not independent, it can't do a lot of things without a phone. In the rain or with gloves on, it's impossible to use them at all. I have epix pro 2 now and I wanted to upgrade to apple watch ultra since I have an iPhone and macbook, it was a big mistake :) and battery is not the biggest problem.
Epix 2 also has a "flashlight" screen like the Apple Watch Ultra. Step 1: hold LIGHT button;
Step 2: Select the "flashlight" symbol; Step 3: Press UP or DOWN to adjust the brightness and color.
TIP: You can quickly press LIGHT twice to turn on the flashlight at this setting in the future.
I really wish the epix had the actual LED light, i prolly would of gotten it if it did
@@viccao8431 same, the epix "flashlight" is next to useless, they should have at least whited out the entire screen on it
@@PJo336 I think I understand why Garmin didn't add it. At least, my guess was battery life and keeping the price at a certain point. But you are right, it would be a plus if they had it on the Epix 2 as well.
I need Garmin to build with cellular, I love all that Garmin does especially for standup paddleboarding, but I really like just having my watch and no phone and still being able to make or take a call.
Same here. Cellular is only reason I still lean Apple Watch. Can’t stand having my phone on me for riding. I prefer most of the features of the garmin - if only they had cellular.
honestly, garmin is more oriented for outdoors, military, and country lifestyles. I got the Tactix 7 pro, its an awesome tool. The default coords format is MGRS, the military runs on this.
Such a dense video! Thanks for making it compact
You're welcome!
I didn't hear you mention, but one big difference is lack of aggregated data. Apple Health and Fitness apps are separately required to search for certain things. And there is no available web platform for analyzing or comparing. Huge plus for Garmin. Also, Apple doesn't "do" anything with all the metrics it gathers. Body battery, training readiness, performance condition, sleep score, etc. are examples of Garmin setting a baseline and they letting you know how you are doing.
Edit: to Des’ credit, he has mentioned it before.
I shared your concern regarding aggregated data, Jeff, but tossed my Garmin and switched to Apple Watch when I discovered HealthFit, a $5 app that aggregates the data. Not web-based, but otherwise amazing data display.
I don’t need Garmin to tell me that I’m Unproductive.
However this does come with the trade off of other Fitness watch makers considerably worse health data privacy.
@@gallopingsalmon 😂
I haven’t looked at Healthfit but Athlytic is very good.
I think it's good that Apple takes sports seriously. This encourages other manufacturers. :)
Appreciate this information, I have a 50 mile run coming up and was tempted to switch back from garmin to apple. But for the long distance with the accurate elevation info etc, I’ll just stick with my fenix 6 pro 👍🏻
Great video! I am on the edge of getting an Ultra but I already have a Garmin Fenix 7. I DO miss the functionality that Apple provides within the ecosystem and why I am on the edge. All in all, I loved your video pointing out differences and similarities. Thank you.
The Athlytic App is so good! So glad you mentioned it!
It's great!
Can you please link it. Hard to find in the app store!
Unbiased analysis is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
The one thing I’m missing with my AW is training peaks integration. I’ve paid for iSmooth but I can’t hear the changes if I’ve got music playing and I can’t find a vibration setting in the app.
I have had Series 2 and Series 5 Apple Watch. I liked the style and the functions. I did not keep them because they just suck for endurance training. The Ultra fixes some of those issues, BUT I don’t like the look of it.
I would rather just keep my Garmin that is the best work out watch. Not to mention, when I did have my Apple Watches I would start getting distracted on my watch apps as if I were on a phone. The limited smart watch capabilities of the Garmin is a BENEFIT.
I see your point, but I actually experienced the opposite effect. With my AW I'm less likely overall to look at my phone and it keeps me from having that distraction of checking my calendar and then three hours later, what just happened TikTok/Instagram void.
I do not like the herd of sheep feeling I get of having an AW vs. Garmin or the other sports focused watches, but I can't overlook the utility of it for that reason alone. At least the Ultra looks unique (for now) and doesn't need to be charged every single day.
@@freepat101 The easy solution for your phone addiction issue is simply delete those apps... Truth is, there're probably not even good for ya, unless if you're making money off them
Love your videos - you and the Rainmaker are great dudes and you review technology that I like to use. Appreciate the work you do. I ended up going with the Epix2. It does absolutely everything I want a watch to do, and I charge once every 1-2 weeks. Also, really like the Garmin Body Battery feature and daily training recommendations. I converted over to this watch from an Apple Watch Gen 4 which after 4 years of use could barely get through a single day. The quality of the Garmin hardware is just top notch. Apple makes a great product though, and for someone who really wants a cellular connection that is clearly the way to go.
Thanks Rob and appreciate the kind words! Thanks for also sharing your thoughts on the watches you've owned and currently use. It helps others with making a purchase decision 👍
Great review. Still sold on Garmin. I’m still with a Garmin Instinct Solar, but I’d love to upgrade to a Fenix 7x sapphire solar. Alas, a pipe dream for us commoners.🙄😉
I love my Instinct! I’ll be upgrading to Fenix 7 Solar once I’m able to move out of where I am currently. Just save up little by little and you’ll get it.
@@Maximumoverbite Thanks! You’re an inspiration.🙌🏻
the comparo we all needed, thank you!
Thanks Nic!
Very useful feature comparison. As this is Apple's first "ultra" iteraction of the watch product, I would expect them to continue increasing feature sets (ie: vs Garmin and others). As for features, I wonder that Apple must consider its third-party app ecosystem when including base features in WatchOS, striking a balanace somewhere.
I was coming here to say the same thing. It's very likely that the reason a lot of the features that are native to other sports watches is that Apple might have to toe the line between making a very capable watch that can do a ton of things while not excluding their software partners. Apple doesn't want to be accused of taking money out of app developers' pockets.
And yes, I also agree that if this is Apple's first foray on this type of device that in a few years it will be even more capable and more of a threat to Garmin and others. It's only a matter of time before they dominate the extreme sports market smartwatch market as their first entry is usually a way to test the waters to ensure there's a market for a product and then proceed to introduce more features to ice the competition.
I suppose it helps them keep the costs down too, and sell it at a cheaper price. But you as an end user ends up paying for or more likely these days paying for a subscription to a third party app.
The best thing about the Apple Watch is the cellular connectivity- this means you leave your phone at home and still be contactable. This is best thing for me - it means I can go out for a run without a heavy phone in my pocket. Not to be underestimated.
Forerunner 945 lte has same function
@@charmtecktonik ok, but this video is about the fenix and epix
@@charmtecktonik The LTE function on the 945 is very different and does not have all of the capabilities of an AppleWatch cellular version.
The best thing about going out for a run, is being not reachable.
@@MrBirgerB That really depends on your personal circumstances. For me, health and family issues make being reachable very important.
Nice movie!
Good pace - fast and specific information.
Way to go! :)
Thanks!
Great video Des. Would you make the switch to the Ultra for your all in one sports and smart watch? Or is it still a less impressive overall experience than the Epix?
Basically for the casual techie smart watch wearer apple watch is recommended. On the other hand the more rugged outdoor navigation multi sport enthusiast Garmin is recommended. Good video and comparison I purchased the Garmin smartwatch and I'm satisfied lol ✌🏿
Hello great comparsion ! I like you mention about apps and skiing app because when i have AW7 i must use Slope and Workoutdoors ! Now i have Epix and battery of 15-16 days with off aways on and off blood OX. I like fact with Garmin we have all in one app and no need boring 2-3-4 aps and collect data in more places . If i want 1 thing Garmin to have this is lte and microphone .
I returned the fenix because of the scree, the epix seems pretty good tough. Will get the AW as soon as it is available.
I used Apple Watches for 4 years. That includes running, lifting, swims, rucking, anything you can imagine really. And I just made the switch to the fenix 7x and it was well worth it. The only thing I miss is my activity rings. But the information I get from my 7 than my series 6 or the older models is insane!
How many days does the battery take?
@@AndreyMatveev there’s different modes, but in the balanced mode with balanced gps and all those different settings, at 100% its about 25-29 days. Keep in mind I have the sapphire solar. On battery saver mode it last about 50 days. Also one of my favorite features I’ve got use out of is the built in flash light. I didn’t know it had it until I bought the watch. It’s bright too!
Finally someone did the ultimate test !!!!
I was very interested in the Ultra but that interest led me to the Epix and I’m very happy with it
Best decision you made. i'm still laughing with the Apple watch "ultra" and their ecosystem for sports.
Same here. As an athlete focused guy the feedback and coaching is priceless and honestly having a phone on your wrist is just unhealthy for my mental health. I have an s5 Apple watch but it's been in the drawer since i bought the Epix.
Great review. I miss a better cross country skiing tracker, that actually is able to track the distance you travel.
there's an app for that (built in fitness) or the app called Slopes: Ski & Snowboard
Please do a video comparing Apple Health and Garmin Connect.
I think this is where choices will be made for one vs the other.
Yes. Not enough people are talking about this. It doesn’t matter what the watch can do; Apple Health still has an enormous gap to make up over Garmin Connect. Heck, I have custom workouts in Garmin Connect that I created in 2010 and I’m still using them on my Epix today.
And as long as Apple Health can only be accessed on an iPhone, that’s an instant non-starter. I create custom navigation courses and workouts in GC in the browser on my MacBook Pro and send them to whatever Garmin device it’s destined for. Not to mention the detailed post-activity data analysis. There’s no way I’m going to be hunching over an iPhone for all of this.
Apple still has an awful lot of ground to make up.
Apple Health is so off-putting for me. It’s so basic and all about looking appealing for the casual New Years resolution exerciser. Garmin is dedicated to people who are maintaining fitness all the time.
@@bufferino7880 And the ONLY way to review workouts in Apple Health is on the iPhone. What if I want to review workout trends over time? I want to take advantage of my computer and large display, not be hunched over an iPhone.
True. But of course you can automatically sync to Strava to get all the details
And how does Samsung health compare to both.
great video, but Im just wondering, do you think apple need dedicated work out/health app for mac that we can see full data in big screen? and we can export in to PDF or something?
Fantastic video. 👏🏻 There are a lot of people looking for this one exact topic. ⌚👀
Thanks Matt! I hope this video can help with their decision 👍
Nice video man! Very cool with a lot of helpful information 😎
Thanks and glad it helped!
Thanks for the informative video.
You’re welcome!
this is like bosch home and bosch pro tools sets, bosch home being the apple watch, very good, but still not good for an expedition or some serious tour. Nice comparison, i was looking for this
Best video I watched thank you
Thanks!
Great comparison! Thx for sharing. I´m looking for the best watch for health monitoring (not sports, exercise) and if I understand you correctly the Ultra has a short leg up on the Garmin in this regard?
I don't want the cost of an iPhone and I integrate my Garmin head unit into my data on Garmin Connect.. So the apple watch is no use to me. But its great that these companies are pushing each other, as we all benefit.
Thanks for the great summary.
Not that this is going to make the difference but you can do custom build on the Epix. It adds a 3rd sapphire choice of titanium Bezil with gray body and than you can also choose between lots of bands.
I like the ultra just because of compatibility with my phone. But I backpack and fly fish a lot and would love topo maps on my wrist. Any suggestions for apps for the ultra watch?
Both pretty good but if I was lost in the middle of the Amazon or at sea I definitely would want the garmin. The ultra does have more features though and it’s the best choice if you have access to a charger every other day.
You’ve ended the discussion with this comment, EXACTLY👌🏼
And you can charge the Garmin up with the solar (turn it off to charge quicker).
@CD but just to clarify the Epix doesn’t have solar charging but the Fenix 7 and Instinct 2 do have those options.
@@MrDingaling007 can confirm, solar will NOT replace your charger; it may extend life a little, but there is a RUclips video showing exactly how much charge you get leaving it in the sun for a whole day, it was minuscule.
@@SpaceGhostt right i guess i can only speak for my instinct solar. I can turn it off and charge up more % if im out camping in one spot for a few days. There is a massive difference too if charging in regular smart watch mode and battery saver mode. I have not charged my watch for ages because i just turn it off and leave it by a window when i dont actually need, so for me it has replaced the charger.
Now this comparison is what i was waiting for! Thank you very much for your effort!
You're welcome and thanks for watching!
The ultra is $1100 in Canada. I returned mine after finding it pretty lacklustre for outdoor activity. I’d switch to Garmin hands down if I wasn’t into apple fitness plus.
Lackluster in what ways?
Very good review
Thanks!
For me it's the battery life on the Garmin Fenix's! I consistently get 2-3 weeks of battery with a dozen workouts, Spotify playback from the watch, always on heart rate, etc.
Battery is only strong point for garmin. Other than that,,,,, killed.
@@mehshutup3041 Btw: Not everyone is an extremely fragile athlete like you that wants every other opinion invalidated, some just want distance from their phone which the garmin is really bad at it, since it is just an extension, not a replacement.
The Apple Watch manages this distance and you can even have internet with it far away from your phone. Charging it every other day isn't a problem if you don't go on hiking tours that last weeks. Garmin is the best sports watch, Apple IS the best smart watch.
Deal with it
You can get a month out of a 5 year old garmin, realistically lol.
@@peterkim5755 the GPS in Garmin is unparallel
I can make calls with the Apple Watch, but the battery consumption is large and the heat is severe. Is the battery enough to use the GPS simultaneously?
I’ve been debating between my Ultra and my 7X for a month and I just cannot decide For the life of me. I love that Garmin shows all my data on the watch face but I like the smart watch aspects of the ultra even though I do have a smartphone and don’t necessarily need the smart watch features. But I also hear now the Ultra sensors are more accurate
While heart rate accuracy is slightly better on the Ultra the GPS accuracy goes to the Epix and Fenix. Either will be just fine though and both will provide meaningful feedback and neither are wildly inaccurate. I'd make your decision more on usability and feature sets based on your preference on sports features vs smartwatch features.
Good comparison, but what about garmin Tactix 7 delta solar?
Good video! Good info.
Thanks!
What I've been waiting for
🙌
I just bought an EPIX sapphire, for £760 in the UK. So worth it
Glad you are enjoying your watch 👍
Thank you bro it’s a great video ❤
You’re welcome!
I hope Apple Watches this review for their next iteration of the Ultra.
Obviously, they must have some garmin watches in their lab. They might have tested its features against apple watch
Even though I'm not really a watch/gadget person, I'm subscribing anyway because you did such an outstanding job on this video. Still, I would really appreciate a list of 3rd party apps which help the Ultra more fully compete with the Garmins? Thank you so much for your hard work! :)
Thank you so much! That’s a follow-up video so stay tuned! 👍
Yup, I touched on it briefly in this video and am definitely covering it in the follow up in greater detail 👍
@@seanvk It is awesome! So far.
This guy is the de facto expert on RUclips,he is excellent and very knowledgeable.
Have you, or anyone compared VO2 Max calculations on both watches? Any comment on which one is more precise? My Garmin Epix 2 shows a very different VO2 Max compared to my Apple Watch 6, so I am wondering why is that if the HR measurements are very similar.
Best video about the ultra so far! First I got quite hyped about it and thought of getting one, but then after hearing you say 3rd Party apps a 1000 times I remembered what I dislike about AW in general.
Also because almost all of the functions you described in favor of garmin I have also on my cheap forerunner 245, which successfully helped me through tons of training.
I’m just not ready for a smartwatch yet. Prefer a sport watch…
Thx for bringing me back to the ground. Will probably wait for a forerunner 955 LTE or so
It’s good to finally hear that you can pair an HRM Pro with the Ultra.
Yup, any bluetooth heart rate monitor should work with the Ultra. Just note that the advanced running dynamics will come from the Ultra though and not the HRM Pro.
Nice review 👍
Thanks!
Great video 😀👍👍
Thanks!
For me the major benefit of AW Ultra is stand alone cellular connectivity - so that I can take it for a run or bike ride without iPhone in the pocket. Now I have AW4 SS with cellular but the weak LTE signal in rural areas drains battery pretty fast. Still I like it that I can go for a walk with my dog in the forest and still be connected in case of emergency. I could not do it with Garmin. I would really like a review of AW Ultra in such scenario: take it on a bike ride without iPhone and see how long the battery lasts, or how fast it drains. This would be the ultimate test. I imagine the long distance runners would appreciate running with just a watch and still be connected instead of having to keep with them the iPhone.
I agree with you, Robert. It amazes me that there are no YT videos that I could find actually testing the LTE AW vs iPhone (eg rural, in car, etc) for battery, connectivity, communication quality. It would be a popular video.
Yeah, it would be nice to have that in a Garmin. I do some long distance running and take my phone but it also doubles up as a camera so I don't mind so much but if it wasn't for the camera side of things then it would just be an extra lump I have to run around with. For my normal training runs I take my phone, mainly as safety and it would be nice to leave it behind, hopefully Garmin will add this in the next gen.
@@HenleyBailey I expect that this will never be in Garmins like Apple will not allow it. The only thing what will happen is connection through bluetooth like this is something what Garmin knows now
If I was to buy an Ultra, I think I’d wait until Apple worked all the bugs out and made improvements(like they already plan to later this year). Treat it like a new model of car.
Another incredible video. Ultra looking better and better. Def looks like it can easily last through a 50 miler. Maybe a 100 miler without sacrificing too much with the new update. Apple nailed it with their first shot at a fitness watch. Plus the $800 price point is crazy good. That being said, epix and ultra are still a bit too much for me price and size wise and I went with a 955.
Thanks Tony and also appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
955 is an amazing watch... even more so for the price!
@DesFit great review, what I would find interesting as well is the Strava app running on the Ultra watch and what it has to offer there as well as the battery times you get with that 3rd party app. thx
I’ll see what I can do. Thanks!
How big are the downloadable maps on the Ultra? Can it download entire city or is it more of a just a few miles?
grande recensione . Puoi dirmi che applicazione usare su APPLE ULTRA per configurare i sensori potenza quark e power meter2 e come far accoppiamento? grazie
How about Bluetooth connection range?
I currently have Garmin 6X and Apple Watch 7, the Bluetooth range of Garmin is horrible compared to Apple Watch. Was wondering if Garmin Epix 2 Bluetooth range has improved and how does it compare to Apple ultra
Des, I am curious which watch you are using?
I am similar to you, I do strength training, running, swimming, occasionally bike and hike, and I just don't know which watch to pick. I do need some smart features like music and red notifications, but more importantly I need something to help me get better. At the moment I have galaxy watch 4 but it just does not perform well
Do you want a smartwatch with sports watch features or a fitness watch with smartwatch features? This is the question people should be asking themselves when debating between Apple and Garmin.
I personally value the smartwatch features that Apple is known for and the sports features offered are enough for my purposes (plus I’m okay with using 3rd party apps to fill in the gaps).
Well said. I want a garmin for trail mapping features and mtb settings. But I can’t get over the fact I like having cellular option without taking my phone.
Also, software will improve, but hardware is for the life of the watch. The Ultra is likely more future proof.
So rad that you can overlay the multiple gps tracks on one screen, what do you use?
I find Garmin analytics helpful, how does the Athlytic app compare?
As I do lots of sailing, I have a Quatix 7 with AMOLED screen and Sapphire glass. ULTRA just doesn't integrate sailing functions and battery life is still lousy in comparison.
4:10 I'd love to see a comparison between those two kinds of flashlights. Although the Apple Watch uses its screen, its still 2.000 nits. Which is insanely bright - If I'm not mistaken, the brightest display on a mobile device.
ive tried both, the apple watch one is incredibly impressive and you can see easily a few feet in front of you. The old apple watch was less powerful, but still useable. The Epix falls dead last, you have to hold it up to about within a foot of what you are trying to look at. It is almost useless, outside of a tiny amount of light to use the restroom
Both are plenty bright - but I’m annoyed that w/ AWU I can’t use the flashlight until I exit sleep mode. Pain in the butt.
Amazing review! Answered some of my questions thank you!
Glad the information helped! Thanks!
What about cellular call quality, ease of sending txts/emails? When I leave the phone at home and still need to be in contact, I don’t want it to be difficult. Hoping the Ultra can handle this.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
currently use an epix and yeh its great, had a fenix 6x before it and safe to say im a garmin fan, was looking at the ultra watch as i do typically like apple products, use a 14pro max, use ipads etc but when it comes to a watch i do need to have that no need to think about battery before putting it on, or knowing i can wear it overnight and not have to worry about its battery in the morning, the epix just about does that for me but i do see noticeably worse battery life than my previous fenix, still never a need to worry though. I also like the knowledge that in 12 months my watch will have seen probably 30 battery cycles wheras something like the ultra even with its better battery than previous will still see 200 plus charges a year i reckon if not more if you daily charge to ensure it will last any activity you have that day. I think that's a big advantage that's rarely credited, the garmin watches will simply last longer, even if they lose a day off the charge a year its still like 15 days so you wont notice, you will notice a day dropping off your apple watch.
apple watch ultra looks amazing though, just lacks that extra depth the garmin interface has for me.
Can you receive or make a call with the epix or Fenix ? 😢
You mentioned that the battery life seems worse, there was a firmware version that drank the battery life recently which Garmin have fixed with a new one (9.36). It's worth checking which firmware version you have and updating if it's not 9.36 as it fixed that battery drain issue along with some other stuff.
@@Davitor1 I can’t no but then I do have a phone
@@HenleyBailey i meant worse than the fenix 6x which would make sense because of the screen tech.
@@jinx20001 ah yeah, fair enough. I had a Fenix 6 Pro and the battery has been so good with both of them. The 6 Pro was probably a lot better but I don't even notice as charging for 20 minutes every 5 days or whatever just doesn't really feel like a chore. :D The 6X has a much bigger battery though so I can imagine it's probably noticeable coming from that.
Let me just say, "I've been a loyal Apple fanboy since the very first iPod, iPhone, and watch, including all their computers." However, I have worn a Garmin Epix Gen 2 every day since getting it three months ago and don't plan on taking it off for anything else right now. I do wildlife photography walking trails every weekend, and the battery life is a no-brainer for me.
The more I wait to buy Apple Watch ultra, the more reasons I find to wait longer, maybe for Apple Watch ultra v2. I am doubtful it would be any better from the way apple does in the past.
I think the v2 will just have color options mostly
great video mate, best review for AW Ultra! I have it for 2 days and I love the design, it's bigger and it has a more "masculine" look. You can also style it with a suit, done it today :)
Glad you are enjoying your watch!
Great video and comparison!
Any chance that you'd do a comparison between the AW Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro?
Yup, in the works. Thanks!
The advantage of AW Ultra is that it likely has a more capable chip inside it, with a more malleable operating system, and therefore will receive more updates in the future to fill in the gaps. So what's missing today, might be present in the future. Technically this isn't the Ultra's strength rather an Apple strength. Hardware and software in harmony.
@@madprophet4790 An operating system that is stable, sophisticated, well integrated and within their own control that they can do whatever they want with. No need to wait for Google for their WearOS or whatever it's called, or TizenOS from Samsung.
Those 3rd party apps charge subscription fees which doesn't happen with the Garmin. Plus planned obsolescence is much faster with the Apple

Epix vs ultra finally
Something that Des (and DCrainmaker for that matter) avoid completely is the depth of the included analytics from Garmin connect. Hardware capability is a small part of the equation.
Analytics could always be added via software. No big deal.
@@trancenut81 at extra cost? At experimentation to find the right metrics? Why bother, just get the Garmin, no added software subscriptions needed to make it work, it just works (which used to be apples catch phrase until the App Store came along)
I’ve mentioned it in previous videos but left that out in the video. Check out my Series 7 vs Fénix 7 video 👍
I thought it was running on 1.25x speed... Anyway great video!
😂Thanks!
Does apple *guarantee* water resistance of the Ultra? I lost a series 5 in a regular pool. I am not worried about my Fenix there.
Which would you use for camping,sailing/boating or hiking trails over long distances & time? Basically completely depend on the gps & compass features.
The Garmin
Great comparison. Any chance you will do a head to head of maybe the Venu 2 Plus and the Apple Watch 8?
Yup! Already in the works along with others. Thanks and stay tuned!
@@DesFit thanks! I have only a couple runs over the half marathon distance left in me. I may not need to upgrade me Fenix 5 to an Apple Ultra if an 8 will do.
Do you have any video about the third party apple watch apps that are so useful for sports?
Coming soon!
Nobody mentions the Apple Watch amazing assistive touch feature 😢.
You don’t have to only touch the screen on the Apple Watch.
Great vid though!
After I started cycling and now with electronic shifting, heart rate monitor, power meter and radar lights, it’s apparent that the Apple Watch is totally self contained - no support of ANT+ and no import of any data of these sensors, also no export of its own data to any other devices. A basic Garmin 530 Head unit aggregates all the data and analyses it for me, also connected to Strava.
Apple Watch is a very good smartwatch (I wear it every day) but it’s not up to the standard as a sport watch, and I don’t see Apple putting actual resources in this area.
On these few days, I have a few times which I nearly placed an order for the Ultra due to it being available for pick up. But when I think that it doesn’t change anything for my cycling training, I gave up buying and will keep my current Series 7 for another year.
EPIX 2 always ❤❤❤❤
Its give you every thing you need.
I think the more “ultra” comparison is comparing both best uncompromised versions like the Apple Watch ultra and the Garmin Enduro 2 or fenix7x solar
You do it then smarty pants
