    Fish would be fine with feeding once a week although I try to feed small amounts every second day👍
    You should turn that bubbler off, I switched mine off two weeks ago and the algae is already pretty much gone, have two Roma 240s next to each other!

      I think it all boils down to the same thing: overfeeding isn't good for your fish or your water quality! We're achieving the same goal so whatever works for you. 🙂
      Two!! Have you got a fish wall?? 😆
      I'm alright with a bit of algae. It's not overtaken the tank because I have a lighting schedule so the lights are on for a few hours in the morning, off for a siesta period for a few hours in the afternoon, then on for about five hours in the evening.
      I'm using the 307 that came with the tank. It works really well but the one thing I would change is that I don't like how the inlet and outlet are tucked away in the corner of the tank.
      I found a few stagnant areas in the tank but since adding the airstone, the water flow is much improved. Plus I get worried about the duckweed smothering the surface of the tank sometimes if I can't tend to it for a while for whatever reason.
      Having said all that, they're great big tanks, aren't they? Just wish the Aquasky light didn't have to be controlled by the silly app! AND it requires your location now! What's that about?? 🙄

      @DashDrones 7 месяцев назад

      @@TamTalksTanks👍 agreed! Yeah I have a fish wall 😂
      I swapped the plumbing when setting up the tanks as the 307 is a little underpowered for over 200litres. Anyway now the intake is on the right and the output is on the left and find it gets the water moving throughout.
      The light included isn't actually an aquasky, fluval made an underpowered version specifically for the Roma 240, it's only 14w Vs the 35 Aquasky. So I ended up upgrading to the plant 3.0s - no wonder I'm constantly broke!
      Got rid of my duckweed, it was taking all the light from the other plants and replaced with Amazon frogbit which is doing an amazing job of keeping the tank stable.
      No clue why they need location when it's a Bluetooth connection?? This world gets stranger each day..

    Just found your channel. Fantastic video that really needs to be shouted from the rooftops. I cycle through feast/famine with my fish. They get one or two FEAST days a week, then little to no feeding the rest. Never been healthier. Especially my angelfish would get sick SO easily no matter what my water change/filter clean schedule was when I was feeding daily. Then I started switching it up where some days I made pellets rain right after a water change and other days I'd throw maybe a dozen in or none at all. Haven't had any issues with illness since. Though my otos are not thrilled with the less algae growth. 😂 But a longer photoperiod seems to help with that.

      Hello and welcome! 👋 Thanks so much for tuning in and for such a lovely comment! 🥰
      Yes!!! That's a fantastic description. Feast and famine - it might sound a bit cruel to people who don't know fish very well, but it's a really normal part of their basic body function and it's not like they're actually starving since they get FED when they're fed lol!
      Love otos. Feel so bad for mine - I've had really bad luck with fish transitioning from the shop to my home aquarium so I've ended up with somewhat of an accidental Noah's Ark scenario. I bought a school of five otocinclus and only one survived, poor things. I'd love to introduce some more, but I've got some concerns about it that I might address in another video.
      The survivor seems to be doing really well though! Big fat belly eating so much algae! And he takes the opportunity to snack during the feasts. He really likes the bug bites.
      So glad to hear this schedule is working out for somebody else as well. We're obviously doing something right if our fish are so healthy now!

    I have taken a page from the bakers books, I use a measuring spoon. It's the only way one can be constant with a feed volume. I have about 60 fish in my tank and I feed them 1/4 teaspoon of 1 mm pellets once a day.

    • @TamTalksTanks
      @TamTalksTanks  7 месяцев назад +1

      That's a good way to do it!
      You feed more often than I do but much, much less at each feeding. I'm glad it works for you and your fish!

    Love your channel!! Glad you're back.
    I feel guilty if I skip a day feeding my fish..ha! I think I've been overfeeding ... I've noticed more algae and I don't think it's my lighting by now. I wonder why fish always act SO hungry? It's like they're starving and I feel I have to feed them til they get filled up but I know most of them would eat til they got ill.

    • @TamTalksTanks
      @TamTalksTanks  8 месяцев назад +4

      Thank you! 🥹 It's good to be back!
      If you go right the way back on my shorts, you'll find a video where I talk about how I didn't mind overfeeding my fish... Oh how my opinion has changed!!! My water quality has improved, my bladder snail population is no longer crazy and my fish seem healthier and, oddly, more active!
      When you think about it, fish aren't really domesticated. They still have all of their wild instincts, including not knowing when their next meal is coming, so they're constantly on the search for food and will take anything they can get to get them through hard times.
      Dogs do the same, even despite their domestication, begging for food scraps and pleading with you that they're starving despite being well-fed and never going hungry in their lives!
      We're one of the few animals that have come to understand that we can hold off eating everything in sight because starvation isn't imminent.
      Don't let them guilt trip you!! 😂

    Thank for the great video tan . Congratulations on the baby birth . ❤
    May I ask , I bought a new tank that’s longer and better for my corydorys and neons . And I was wondering if I shoul d scoop up the sand and fluval stratum and put it in the new tank or just use new sand and substrate and replant with the original plants and sponge filter . Will that be enough or should I use the old substrate too . Sorry for the long question xx

    • @TamTalksTanks
      @TamTalksTanks  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you!
      I would definitely reuse any substrate that you can within reason as a lot of beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms, zooplankton etc. will exist within it and it will only benefit your tank. Rinse in tank water if it's particularly dirty to preserve the life within it.
      The only time I would not reuse fluval stratum is if you are using it for a particular reason; for example, to soften your water or to lower your pH as it has a limited lifespan for this purpose (around three years, I think?).
      That said, if it's older than its chemically active lifespan and has been inert (chemically unreactive, i.e. not changing pH and the likes) for some time, there's no reason to change it as your fish will have adapted to the current substrate.
      There are only a few fish that are popular in the hobby (e.g. discus) that require very tight parameters, soft water, etc.. Most fish will adapt to your water, especially if locally bred.
      So yes, I would typically reuse any substrate that you can! It'll save you money and potentially the hassle of cycling your tank again.
      If you're happy with your existing plants and sponge filter, I say go for it!! Especially the filter. If you want to change your filter, I'd advise to keep the old one running in tandem with the new one for at least two weeks so that the beneficial bacteria can become established within the new media, lest your cycle crash. There's a video on my channel that goes into the nitrogen cycle with the aim of simplicity, because we don't need to be chemists to be a part of this hobby. 👍 I'd also advise you to check out other videos on the topic (I like Cory from Aquarium Co-op's explanation with sweets/candy) if you're still unsure!
      I hope that helps! Let me know if you need any further explanation and I'll be happy to assist. 🙂

    My Gold Fishes Were Lying Bottom And One Of them got a white powdery like patches on its fins …what should I do?

    • @TamTalksTanks
      @TamTalksTanks  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hiya! Sorry to hear that! It sounds like fin rot! Firstly, I would recommend changing 50-75% of the water in the tank.
      You can perform methylene blue baths to help kill the fungus attacking the fishes' fins, although this is a bandaid solution to a much larger problem.
      I remember you saying in a previous comment on a different video that you had a small tank and I'm sorry to tell you that goldfish are a species of carp that can grow around 30cm or a foot long. A small tank simply is not good enough to house these fish.
      I would recommend a betta (aka siamese fighting fish) as a good beginner-friendly fish as they are quite hardy fish. Make sure to do your research though! There are plenty of videos of betta care on RUclips - I'd recommend checking out channels like Father Fish and Fishtory! for advice on keeping natural-style tanks with plenty of plants. It makes for a healthier environment for your fish and it makes the hobby a lot more enjoyable in the long run.
      I also like channels like Fish For Thought, Girl Talks Fish and Aquarium Co-op, but their methods of fishkeeping are different to mine. They work well enough but I feel like sometimes they create more work for themselves than they need to - but then, we all enjoy different aspects of the hobby! That's part of the joy of fishkeeping.
      You'll find what works for you and your lifestyle, and what's best for your fish. I'd rehome your goldfish if you can and replace them with a single betta. I mentioned before that bettas are quite hardy and forgiving of beginner mishaps, but they're also very personable fish! A lot of people say they're like little water puppies with how they interact with you. 10/10 fish - love them!

      @@TamTalksTanks And Thank You So Much For Your Help! Such a Long And Understandable Guidance!

    • @TamTalksTanks
      @TamTalksTanks  8 месяцев назад +1

      You're so welcome. This is how we learn!
      Definitely go with the betta over the neons. Neons are small but they love to swim around and around, so a 6 gallon is too small for them.
      Bettas also like to swim, but also have their lazy moments. They've been bred to have very long, flowy fins so they get tired out in larger environments. Some sources say 3 gallons is a minimum for bettas, other sources say 5 is the minimum, but everybody agrees that 6 gallons is a good size! 🙂
      Multiple tank syndrome is on the horizon already! 😂 I hope you have a blast. Needless to say, a 150 gallon tank will be plenty for neons should you choose to keep them - in general, the minimum is 10 - 20 gallons for neons but it also depends on how long the tank is, because of their need for swimming space.
      If you choose to keep your goldfish, 150 gallons will be plenty, and room for more. The recommended minimum for comet goldfish (your standard fish) is 30 gallons and 20 gallons more per extra goldfish, whereas fancy goldfish like ranchus require around 20 gallons per fish. 👍
      Luke's Goldies is a very popular channel for goldfish. His approach to fishkeeping again is very different from my own but his fish are doing well, and breeding loads, so he's doing something right!
      Have a great time. 🙂
