  • In the 11th round of GCT Warsaw 2024, Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa R, playing white, secured a victory against Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. The game started with the Caro-Kann Defense: Exchange Variation. Praggnanandhaa's strategic 19th move, axb6, created a pawn majority on the queenside, becoming a decisive factor. Despite Carlsen's attempts to counterattack, he couldn't break through Praggnanandhaa's defense. Eventually, Praggnanandhaa promoted his passed pawn to a queen, leading to Carlsen's resignation. This game is a testament to Praggnanandhaa's strategic planning and tactical execution in chess.

Young Praggna played in an imperceptible and very thorough tactical manner especially after Magnus opted for the Caro-Kann defense.
The Indian prodigy successfully began a series of anticipated moves to counter the weakness of the C column. Finally, while the noose tightens around the Norwegian, and here comes the promotion which makes things worse.

Magnus has been defeated by several players in the past. What makes him great is his consistency in wins over the years in all forms of chess as against some losses. Pragg is definitely very talented, but don’t pressurise him with superlatives, which will prevent him from reaching greater heights.

Magnus had the opportunity to attack the back pawn but didn't take it. I didn't understand why. Surely it would have weakened White.
