I found this video under a Steam review of "The End is Nigh". As a Game Design student who is working on a 2D-Platformer right now this is highly informative! Keep up the good content! You earned a new notification subscriber.
Kerdon91 Wait someone plugged this video on Steam? I’m thrilled, thanks for letting me know! More importantly, thank you for watching and subscribing! Hope you enjoy what I make next. And good luck with your platformer, be sure to tell me when it’s out and playable!
Your video was pinned under a negative review on steam: steamcommunity.com/id/EVA-Pilot/recommended/583470/ Thanks, for your good wishes, but the platformer is only a first approach to work with Unreal Blueprints and to dive into 2D Level Design. It will never leave whiteboxing, nor be published. It will be fun to build nethertheless! Can't wait for your next video!
6 years old, still peak essay. The only thing I wished you would have touched more on was the symbolism behind the game, and what motivated it's creation, but I guess that just inspires me to do my own video about this amazing game regardless, so thanks actually.
Super Meat Boy used to be my favourite platformer of all time, but, after completing The End is Nigh, I realize that the latter surpasses it in every way. Your incredible essay is an awesome explanation of why exactly I felt this way. Great job, man. You earned a new subscriber and a member of notification squad. PS: Also props for drawing such imaginative parallels with music. As a pianist with a 10 year skill, I always appreciate some love towards the nerdy terminology and timeless pieces.
Миша Черемнов Thank you so much! I’m thrilled you enjoyed the video as much as you say you did, and I’m glad you’re sticking around for whatever I make next!
MML's Commentaries It’s just that I’m feeling really passionate towards the emerging trend of video essays on RUclips. Most of the creators in that niche are really underappreciated, so I want to do my best to support them. The essays could be on whatever topics the authors find interesting, which makes them incredibly well thought out, extremely educational and very fun to watch. The reason I subscribed to you is because I think that’s what you aim to do as well. If you are interested, here are some other creators with (in a way) similar content to this video that are really cool, too: Karsten Runquist, Haedox (especially with his latest video on Odyssey), SomecallmeJohnny, Videogamedunkey (he has his own format, but I think you’ll notice some parallels. especially with dunkviews), Vox (!!!), Colossal is Crazy, Nerdwriter1, Entertain The Elk, Austinmcconneell, Downward Thrust, Lessons from the Screenplay, Every Frame a Painting; Enjoy!
Миша Черемнов I actually follow a large number of the creators you mentioned. I also encourage you to check out the people linked in the description. Most of them also make video essays
I like how the game is so frustrating it makes you grind your teeth and tear up in anger and sometimes defeat, but after so many attempts you finally reach your goal and you get a euphoric feeling. This game is absolutely brilliant! So rewarding!
This video is fantastic. I never really plan to play this game, I'm not really into difficult platformers, but this video managed to completely sell me on this game's quality. It's a crime that you have so few subscribers.
MML's Commentaries No problem, mate. It sucks when you spend a lot of time on a video and you don't get a lot of appreciation for it. I just hope that this comment tells you how awesome your videos are.
+DeadlyCreature Thanks a lot man! I’m thrilled that the creators of this game actually watched this and wanted to share it. Hope you stick around for more media analysis in the future!
I'm impressed by how you can convey the rewards and completion and why they're implemented so well. The purpose of the tumors, the effects of the ending(s), how the game incentivizes mastery with each area. You did an excellent job, sir. Keep up the good work.
I think the design of The End Is Nigh really shines in Ruin and Acceptance. While going through Ruin I was wondering why some obstacles were there while not obstructing the player, like extra ledges, exploding balls or cubes were there. But after reaching Acceptance, and the timer started, it was almost instinct that I knew what I had to do. The fact that the entire Ruin can be done backwards through completely different means is truly incredible. Also I love the contrast between Ruin/Acceptance and Nevermore. Throughout the entire game we've been hearing the tracks As Above and So Below hinting at and ascension and descending by the NPCs. The track in Ruin is a remix of, So Below, where in the Acceptance ending Ash ascends by dying. While in Nevermore, Ash descends with mother, (as other NPCs where saying) and the music that plays is, As Above. I think it's literally meant to represent that Ash is as above as he is below. Making the player question if one path is better than the other, or if they're both futile. Like he either dies happily or lives in depression. Both paths are bad and good. This game has surprised me and still does in so many ways. It has become do much more than a simple platformer for me.
Before watching this i completely missinterpreted the concept of the end is nigh. I thought this was a project out of spite made in a way that victory will be for naught (i interpreted the ending of acceptance as ash dying) But this essay gave me a whole different viewpoint on the game and motivated me to play it again. Thank you so much for making :)
I can't believe I found this video just now. Here I was bitching that no one talked about this game, and that people do complain about it being too hard, like the Meat Boy equivalent of Lost Levels. Glad we're mostly on the same page here
Thanks for making this video and highlighting the genius of the game's structure and philosophy, it was an amazing reminder of why I love this game so much
Watched the first few minutes of this and had to stop before I see too much. Waiting for the Switch version is killing me. But, from what I did watch this is really good. Subscribed!
BoTalksGames I’m so thrilled that you actually stopped! I’ll probably buy the switch version too just to support this incredible title. Be patient, this video will always be here 👍
Никита Помелов-Жилинский There are a lot of channels like mine actually, you just gotta know where to look! Check my featured channels list on my channel page, most of the people there make similar content.
Word damn, impressive and entertaining video essay. Going off your credits and special thanks you seem to have to gotten help from some big youtube names (i. E. Geek critique, KingK, etc...) keep up the good work and make use of them connections!
I feel like you’re the type of guy who would make a “why video games are an art form”, kind of video. Just sayin (plus I’m interested in seeing more of your videos in this analysis form)
The End is Nigh is one of my favorite games of all time, and your analysis of it was beautiful. Honestly the first youtube video I have ever kept focus on instead of using as background noise. You have earned my subscription. P.S. I would love to listen to you playing the full Acceptance track like you were in the beginning. Could you release a video of that or something?
Honestly, I'm not good enough at piano to play all of Hungarian Rhapsody, otherwise I would. I literally messed up so bad I had to stop about a second after I cut away. Thank you so much for the kind words, it means so much!
timrtabor123 Odyssey’s definitely the best of the sandbox-y Mario games but it has a lot of problems. I made a video on my second channel with some of my thoughts: m.ruclips.net/video/8O0T9Tc5-Dk/видео.html It mainly comes down to a few things: -The rewards you get don’t always match the effort required, which sort of bugged me. -Some of the locations are a bit too cryptic in my opinion. -Amiibo are stupid and shouldn’t exist. -The reward for 100% completion isn’t at all worth. -Some capture targets control like garbage
Great video, you shown me the reasons I already know but couldn't express on why this game is genius. Too bad it's release date was so close of the not so great, but more popular, Cup Head.
Cuphead's a fantastic game, but I agree, this game is much more enjoyable to me. I think the real game that overshadowed TEIN was Celeste, to be honest.
Good video but I’m gonna be honest The lives system ruined this game for me, which I was absolutely loving up until then, I get what you mean with “evaluation difficulty” but in reality, it doesn’t always work that way, frequently I’d die in a place I’d done 10 times before Making me replay the level doesn’t make the game harder, it just makes it frustrating And I think it’s the fact that it decided to spring this idea on me so late, it feels like a dirty trick, like if they went with the original concept then fine, but this to me feels like something I didn’t sign up for yknow? As someone who’s favorite genre tends to be puzzle games, evaluation to me REQUIRES experimentation, which works great early on but, during the future that’s gone Even if I get literally 400 tumors, it still takes away what makes a game like meat boy or the first half of TEIN so good, it’s hard, but not punishing or frustrating To me punishing is making me do something I’ve done already successfully again for no reason It’s sad because I really WAS enjoying this game and at the time planned to do everything and get all the tumors after finishing but, to me the sheer concept of having lives outside of say a retro cart breaks it I understand where completion comes in but I never think it’s worth rewarding completion by taking away something that feels so fundamental to the game yknow? Great video though, keep making shit
Chris M I get your sentiment. It’s hard to talk about something so late-game without spoiling when the complaint itself is sort of a spoiler. I did my best to make things as spoiler-free as possible by not showing any of the actual final fight and only showing cutscenes. I seriously apologize if that ruined your experience with Breath of the Wild!
TheIncredibleSonia It’s a super tiny detail but in the internet age where people can look shit up so easily and spoil themselves anything less subtle probably wouldn’t have worked as well. I remember sitting with my best friend trying to figure out the secret behind the orb. That may have been one of the most fun times I’ve had with a game in a long time, and I didn’t even own the game at that point!
destiny alpha 2 I do have donation links on my channel page if you’re interested but I’d much rather you use that money to show support for Edmund and Tyler, the minds behind this game

hits different now...
I found this video from Edmund's and Tyler's tweets on it. Very well done video, watched the whole thing. Mad props is all I have to say.

This was such an under rated game
small correction: the ''hungry dude 1'' requires 50 tumors not 70

One of the best vids of the year. Bravo. Subbed.

this was an amazing video, thank you very much

That's disappointing, but thanks for the response. I really did love the video though, can't wait to see future videos.
this was ridiculously well made
Great analysis, thoughts on Odyssey given that you were skeptical going in?
timrtabor123 Odyssey’s definitely the best of the sandbox-y Mario games but it has a lot of problems. I made a video on my second channel with some of my thoughts: m.ruclips.net/video/8O0T9Tc5-Dk/видео.html
It mainly comes down to a few things:
-The rewards you get don’t always match the effort required, which sort of bugged me.
-Some of the locations are a bit too cryptic in my opinion.
-Amiibo are stupid and shouldn’t exist.
-The reward for 100% completion isn’t at all worth.
-Some capture targets control like garbage
I had no idea Rich Evans was in this game. That’s pretty cool. I knew he was friends with Edmund.
Simply amazing!
Meriscan Thank you!
Good video but I’m gonna be honest
The lives system ruined this game for me, which I was absolutely loving up until then, I get what you mean with “evaluation difficulty” but in reality, it doesn’t always work that way, frequently I’d die in a place I’d done 10 times before
Making me replay the level doesn’t make the game harder, it just makes it frustrating
And I think it’s the fact that it decided to spring this idea on me so late, it feels like a dirty trick, like if they went with the original concept then fine, but this to me feels like something I didn’t sign up for yknow?
As someone who’s favorite genre tends to be puzzle games, evaluation to me REQUIRES experimentation, which works great early on but, during the future that’s gone
Even if I get literally 400 tumors, it still takes away what makes a game like meat boy or the first half of TEIN so good, it’s hard, but not punishing or frustrating
To me punishing is making me do something I’ve done already successfully again for no reason
It’s sad because I really WAS enjoying this game and at the time planned to do everything and get all the tumors after finishing but, to me the sheer concept of having lives outside of say a retro cart breaks it
I understand where completion comes in but I never think it’s worth rewarding completion by taking away something that feels so fundamental to the game yknow?
Great video though, keep making shit
Good essay. Subscribed and looking forward to more.
Minor quibble, but you didn't need to casually spoil the final boss of Breath of the Wild
I never noticed the roman numeral in the orb
TheIncredibleSonia It’s a super tiny detail but in the internet age where people can look shit up so easily and spoil themselves anything less subtle probably wouldn’t have worked as well. I remember sitting with my best friend trying to figure out the secret behind the orb. That may have been one of the most fun times I’ve had with a game in a long time, and I didn’t even own the game at that point!
I had collected all of the tumors when I got to that poitn am I just wanted to know what would happen if I jumped into the orb
Osom content, i really enjoy it. Grettings from Argentina.
Bocha Spoiler Thanks a lot for watching!
give back my breath...
I just finished acceptance.
I think I'm gonna stop now.
wow, so cool video!
Ebaniy D6 kybik Thanks for watching!

Alkamone Thanks, I also think it’s awesome!
Take my money
destiny alpha 2 I do have donation links on my channel page if you’re interested but I’d much rather you use that money to show support for Edmund and Tyler, the minds behind this game
So you play as Rich Evans? And he is super agile?
Prop. Joe 100% yes

I just... Don't get it. This looks absolutely terrible, unimaginably mind numbing with nothing of value what so ever. I don't understand platformers.
