    In the prelude comic tied to the events of this movie, it’s revealed that T’Challa had already been Black Panther since around the same time that Tony Stark became Iron Man.
    T’Chaka continued to be king but had retired the mantle of Black Panther and passed it on to his son who was still the crown prince of Wakanda at the time.
    Young T’Chaka in the Oakland 1992 flashback was portrayed by John Kani’s real life son Atandwa.
    Griot, the Wakandan A.I., was voiced by South African comedian Trevor Noah.
    Finally, while we all mourn Chadwick Boseman, I would also like to acknowledge the late Dorothy Steel. She portrayed the Merchant Tribe Elder.
    She passed away in October 2021, but she was able to reprise her role in the sequel Wakanda Forever which would be her final film released posthumously. Miss Dorothy was 95.

      @jkhoover 6 месяцев назад +6

      This is one thing that I thought the movie didn't explain. I didn't know there was a comic tie-in, but I still think it's a failure in storytelling that it's not explained in the movie. Unfortunately, I think this movie makes a lot of jumps that aren't explained.

    • @AshLee92490
      @AshLee92490 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@jkhoover Eh, I don't feel like it really needs to be explained that much. Even though we don't know WHEN T'Challa became the Black Panther, we know that T'Challa was already holding the Black Panther mantle, while his father was still King, when we meet him. T'Chaka was a much older man, so it make sense that he would no longer hold the BP mantle at his age. We learn in this movie that the King/Queen normally holds the title of BP as that's what Challenge Day was for. I mean, it's not hard to fill in the blanks and not everything needs to be spelled out if you're paying attention. The only info that was new in the OP's comment was how LONG ago exactly that T'Challa became BP, which isn't really THAT relevant as he's highly skilled in the role already when he's introduced. There's no actual challenge for T'Challa's role as BP. It's his role as King that's more of the challenge for him, his story, and we're already aware of official aspect of role, although trained for, is new for him in actual practice...

    • @jkhoover
      @jkhoover 6 месяцев назад

      @@AshLee92490 I disagree. It may be because they were trying to fit BP's story into the narrative that already started with Civil War, but I think BP has many holes in the story telling that keep it from being a great movie to me. You shouldn't have to read the comics or make assumptions for the story to work. That's notb"spelling it out", it's proper storytelling. If the king has to defend the throne, they should be BP. Apparently, you can challenge at any time, since Killmonger challenged right after T'Challa became king.

    • @AshLee92490
      @AshLee92490 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@jkhoover Again, the only new info that was in the OP's comment was how LONG T'Challa had been BP, which isn't really that relevant to the overall story. Everything else we pretty much knew based on what was told and shown between Civil War and this film. Killmonger was able to challenge because he was of royal blood and he was within his right to challenge. One of elders literally say it after Killmonger declares his challenge for Kingship & BP. Challenge Day is a traditional procedure/ceremony, but nowhere was it said that the challenge had to only be that specific day only. The roles King & BP always being one seems to be what YOU feel, but the movies literally have shown that it isn't always the case (ie King T'Chaka & BP T'Challa in Civil War). That's why Killmonger specifically challenges for the role of both King AND Black Panther. That's not a plot hole...

    • @jkhoover
      @jkhoover 6 месяцев назад

      @@AshLee92490 Let me ask it this way. If T'Chaka hadn't died in CW, and Killmonger came along and challenged, then what would have happened? T'Chaka would have had to fight? He would have had to fight the king and T'Challa to be king and BP?

    Vibranium doesn't rust and it also can't be detected by metal detector's. It can repair damaged tissue which they have shown in this movie but they also shown happen in age of Ultron when Ultron grew vision body. The reason why the wakandans won't give vibranium because it's easily weaponized and yes the wakandans said they would share only meant there advancement in technology not their actual vibranium.

    Another great reaction, Jax! In response to your question about the masks in the fight for the throne between T'Challa and M'Baku, of the 5 tribes of Wakanda, 4 follow the panther god, Bast. The Jabari tribe, led by M'Baku, separated from the other 4 tribes and live in the mountains. They do not worship Bast, but the ape god, Hanuman. If you remember, when T'Challa accepted the challenge, M'Baku said, "Glory to Hanuman". Just a little info explaining the religious/ political situation in Wakanda.

    The meteor carrying Vibranium is the size of a mountain. When it entered the earths atmosphere some pieces broke off. That’s how Stark got his. Half of the meteor didn’t even land in Wakanda. It landed in the middle of the ocean. So people can go get some vibranium that’s sitting under 3 miles of ocean and several hundred feet of ocean floor. You’d be better off trying to steal it from Wakanda lol

    Black Panther and of course T’Chaka is such an interesting character. I cant recall what my first introduction to the character was but I do remember him being a character in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (2006) in a game filled with playable hero's from Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Daredevil etc. He caught my attention in those games but as a massive X-Men and Spider-Man fan back then (X-Men and Spider-Man films were massive) I mostly played as them.
    He also played a big part in the amazing The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, a 2010 animated series that heavily featured Black Panther as a character. The series overall is very much inspired by the classic 1960s comics and Avengers line up but set in modern day but still maintains a cool retro meets modern style. Would highly recommend it and it's only Two Seasons. It was basically the MCU if the MCU had the rights to X-Men an Fantastic Four, The Guardians of the Galaxy even had an episode over four/three years before the film.
    But it wasn't until Civil War (2016) that the more mainstream audience finally got introduced to the character, naturally alot of new Marvel fans got introduced to the wider Marvel Universe with the MCU.

    The visual landscape is really nice, but the CGI has to be the worst of the whole MCU. After all the parts of the movie are laughed at as PS2 graphics. To be fair they were under extreme time pressure to finish before IW and clearly needed a few more months, so not the fault of the team.

      You clearly have no seen a PS2 game in a while. PS4 quality maybe (keep in mind, even the PS5 is not up to movie quality. People have this false perception that vidoe games have better graphics than they actually do. The PS5 for example has the BEST graphics I’ve ever seen for a VIDEO GAME. They still do not hold up to movie quality though. The BEST PS5 game would be torn apart if a movie tried to pass off those graphics lol. There’s different standards. And as such black Panther’s CGI is on the level of PS4. Bad for a movie but no where near as bad as PS2.

    Since 1995, I have been a fan of Black Panther. I've been a fan of Erik Killmonger since 1998. As a modern take on the character's hairstyle in the comics, Killmonger's dreadlocks were a take on the character's long hairstyle. Michael B. Jordan researched Tupac Shakur, Fred Hampton, Huey P. Newton, Marcus Garvey, and Malcolm X in order to be ready for the part. He also mentioned the influence of Heath Ledger's Joker depiction in The Dark Knight (2008). Jordan had wanted to portray a villain for "a while" and compared Killmonger and T'Challa's relationship to that of the X-Men characters Magneto and Professor X. The films that influenced the 2018 film Black Panther. Malcolm X, Boyz n the Hood, Do the Right Thing, School Daze, Baraka/Samsara, Moolaadé, Timbuktu, Mother of George, Black Caesar, The Color Purple, and James Bond.

    the visual of Erik Stevens in the fire of the heart shaped herb is a 3D visual of the African proverb "a child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth." because Erik was left to fend for himself as a kid, he was denied warmth, safety, comfort, acceptance, and prominence. 10:38 I'm not sure if I'm correct, but still what I deduce is the mask M'baku is wearing represents Hanuman, as earlier in this conversation he says, "glory to hanuman". Hanuman is the monkey god in Hindu Mythology. A celibate, and Lord Ram follower who is, according to mythology, is also an immortal warrior with power unbeknownst to anyone. Since M'baku lives in mountains, just like monkeys, I suppose, it respresents him.
    Fun fact: That "glory to hanuman" line caused somewhat of a controversy here in India as some hindus were not happy their god's name was used in this movie for some reason. But in the end, it all cooled down.😊

    It was a real treat to watch Jax experience the same joy and awe I had when I first saw Black Panther five years ago. It’s bittersweet to see it now because the ache of Chadwick’s absence will always be felt, and this film is such a beautiful testament to all the things he exemplified in his lifetime. Wakanda Forever indeed.

    The first black superhero in Marvel comics was Black Panther. Black Panther is a Marvel Comics character who appears in American comic books. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist-plotter Jack Kirby and originally appears in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966) during the Silver Age of Comic Books.Erik Killmonger (né N'Jadaka) is a Marvel Comics supervillain who appears in American comic books. Don McGregor and Rich Buckler created him, and he first appeared in Jungle Action #6 (September 1973).

    I admit to being a comic book nerd. And what I find so funny about this movie is that Angela Bassett is playing The Black Panther's mother. When the first X-Men movie was announced by 20th Century Fox, Marvel Comics fans from all over the world sent letters to 20th Century Fox demanding that Angela Bassett be cast as Storm. In the comics, Storm is married to Coachella, the Black Panther.

    To answer a couple of questions (granted this is the MCU where things often differ from the comics)
    Yes the heart-shaped herb is a limited resource but the Wakandans manage and cultivate it. Over the centuries the Wakandans have collected all of the herb they found growing in the wild and moved it into the city. That doesn't completely eliminate the possibility of a few plants existing in the wild somewhere but as far as anyone knows, they don't.
    Likewise small amounts of vibranium are occasionally found outside the borders of Wakanda. The comics go into more detail but when meteors enter a planet's atmosphere, the heat and friction causes them to disintegrate, most burn up completely. Meteorites are the chunks that managed to survive the trip and land on the planet. So when that huge meteorite landed in Africa and became the vibranium mound, smaller pieces that broke off during the descent but didn't burn up, landed in scattered spots along its path through the atmosphere. So Wakanda isn't the only place where vibranium exists, just the only place where there's a significant amount.
    In the comics, the ancient meteoroid broke into two main pieces as it descended to Earth. The largest chunk (about 3 quarters of the mass) landed in Africa and became Wakanda's vibranium mound. The other quarter landed in a hidden region of Antarctica called the Savage Land, where dinosaurs still exist to this day. And vibranium in that region has different properties from the Wakandan variety- instead of absorbing vibrations it emits vibrations which liquify all other metals, and is known as anti-metal.
    So far, the MCU hasn't mentioned the Savage Land or anti-metal yet (although Civil War seemed to have a brief teaser/Easter Egg for it). However the door is open for Marvel Studios to expand upon those storylines later, if they wish.

    This movie holds a special place in my heart. Before it came out, I had a dream I was in a park. All the sudden, stairs shined out of nowhere, leading straight into the sky. I saw someone walking down and it was my late grandfather. We embraced as I told him how sorry I was for not being there to say goodbye. He simply smiled and told me it was okay. He told me that I'm still the same special boy he'll always love and he'll be watching over all of us. I watched him walk back up the stairs before waking up crying.
    The ancestral plane scene makes me think of the dream and tear up every time.
    Chadwick truly brought Black Panther to life for me. It was sad to hear of his passing just as much as Stan Lee. Both of these guys along with my grandfather were great inspirations to me. RIP to all three of these legends and Wakanda Forever.

      Iron Man and Doctor Strange come to mind more subtly perhaps. The whole point of the first Thor movie was to get the Hero to change his perception of who he was supposed to be. Heroic change and growth is an undertone in all of the MCU stories.

    • @ValerianBajak
      @ValerianBajak 6 месяцев назад

      @@johnniequinn3215 Oh no doubt. But Yinsen was not an antagonist, and had a great deal to do with Stark's apotheosis. Killmonger was T'challa's main antagonist in the movie. And as misguided as he might have been, he was responsible for T'Challa's change of heart. And not just from his position opposing him. The fact that he existed as a living symbol of what happens when isolationism is your doctrine becomes apparent. The other incident is T'challa, who loved and respected his father, found out T'chaka had feet of clay, and changed his worldview accordingly.

  • @Scott_Burton
    @Scott_Burton 6 месяцев назад

    As I understand it, yes, the king can be challenged at any time, but he is only required to accept at his ascension ceremony. But I could be mistaken. T'Challa did not _have_ to accept the challenge, but he felt that he must.
    The reason the power is stripped away for the challenge fights is that if T'Challa had the power of The Black Panther, there wouldn't be a challenge, The Black Panther would be able to destroy any normal human in a 1v1 melee. (Think Barton (Hawkeye) vs Rogers (Captain America), with no weapon or shield. How do you think that would end up on flat terrain with only a 100 diameter space to fight in? Because that's basically what The Black Panther vs a challenger would be)
    Just because T'Challa's sister (Shuri) knows how to create magnificent advances in technology, doesn't mean she can "overnight" make it all stop working. When Captain America's shield was made, once it was made, how do you unmake it? If you build a gun and bullets, how do you stop that gun and bullets from working after it's already been sold?
    I mean, did Tony know how to "switch off" Ultron? Just because Tony improved the concept of the Arc Reactor, did he prevent the similar one Ivan built from working? For that matter, could he switch off the one Obi took from him?
    M'Baku had his chance to be king. He realizes T'Challa earned that right, and he will serve the rightful king, especially when he saw the queen mother and the keeper kneel to offer the herb, the power, for the sake of the nation.
    Post credit scene #2 affirmation of the "another broken white boy to fix"
    For the scenes they were not competing with each other or Chadwick Boseman (T'Challa), Michael B Jordan (Killmonger) commanded many scenes, Danai Gurira (Okoye) owned hers and Letitia Wright (Shuri) overshadowed everyone. Scenes where any 2 or more of these 4, some scenes were more one person than the other, but it changes from scene to scene.
