What a heartbreaking and gut wrenching true story of a great betrayal, for your kindness, love and trust he returned it with cruelty, wickedness and great evil. You're people learned a very valuable and costly lesson, yet your love shines brightly still through to this day, no matter what those who came before you did go through. It's a miracle your great great grandmother survived the cold of winter, hanging in a tree for safety with no food. I had an experience when I was 4 years old. We lived in So Cal. I was outside playing and i heard horses coming, We lived in a concrete community, there were no horses running toward my home, But i heard them. I was gripped with fear, and i started screaming, " the blue coats are coming the blue coats are coming!" I ran into my house with tears running down my face screaming this over and over, i tried to hide under the bed, I could hear the army coming closer. My mother thought i was playing a game and made me go back outside. In fear i climbed up the tallest tree in my cul-de-sac to hide before the blue coats came. I cried myself to sleep in that tree. almost 50 years later, i still remember that fear. though this is the first time that experience makes sense. As an adult I avoid mass graves and war monuments.

I really enjoy hearing your stories and they will live on forever. My friend/neighbor is from the Bitter Water Clan. My Father's clan are from Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre of the state of Chihuahua. My Grandma didn't share a lot of the culture or the language with my dad because the Mexican people did not like the Raramuri either. From what my dad says he believes she wanted to assimilate to Mexican culture so they would not be discriminated against. She told him stories about how Geronimo and a group of Apache's hid amongst the Raramuri people in Copper Canyon. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find much information to say conclusively but my grandma told him they were related to the Apache band of people who had made their home in the canyons. Hopefully one day I can confirm his story before he leaves his physical body, my dad is 82 years old and we now live in NM. I've never felt more at home. My gift has flourished here and i believe i was meant to come back here and though its been hard at times we love it here. Thanks for sharing your stories!

It seems the story is - as often is the case - a bit more complex than when presented by one side. Seems like Kit wasn't the inhumane Native American slaughterer depicted here, at least in his later days

for me as a person who learned english only at school it is hard to understand this special slang. would it be possible to speak more clearly? i'm really interested in what you say!
The “Blue Coats” invaded my land in 1863 also: and killed 2 of my Great Great grandfathers and imprisoned my Great Grandfather. Sherman and his band of merry men came through within 10 miles of my home (enough said). We had help from the Cherokee and the Catawba’s in the east. My Great Grandfather rode with the Catawba Rangers; but he isn’t honored now in this generation. I am sorry about all the suffering they caused your people too.
Do your youth understand and treasure the wisdom and language which you’re handing down? You have the ability to save traditions and language which many like myself will never know since most was lost to history when my ancestors were invaded by Rome and later, by the English.
Heart breaking and disgusting. I'm a fighter but I would NEVER raise my hand to another not out of self-defense or on the orders of another. I don't care WHAT the color of your skin is, if you attack another human, you become less of one.

At first, I was quite sympathetic to this story. But I did a good bit of research on Kit Carson, and his story is quite interesting. Then I did some digging on the Navajo - and found that (like the Apaches and Comanches) managed to make enemies out of literally everyone due to their warmongering.
So Kit Carson's crusade - which is well documented, btw - makes quite a lot of sense in the context of things.

for me as a person who learned english only at school it is hard to understand this special slang. would it be possible to speak more clearly? i'm really interested in what you say!

What did the Navajo say when the Cheyenne showed up?
Do your youth understand and treasure the wisdom and language which you’re handing down? You have the ability to save traditions and language which many like myself will never know since most was lost to history when my ancestors were invaded by Rome and later, by the English.
I would be curious if there's any stories of hot air balloons surveying all of this land prior to battles.
Heart breaking and disgusting. I'm a fighter but I would NEVER raise my hand to another not out of self-defense or on the orders of another. I don't care WHAT the color of your skin is, if you attack another human, you become less of one.
