Dern said later, that he had been advised it would be TWENTY years before he would be forgiven, later recounted that more that FORTY YEARS later he was STILL getting hate mail! Dern also said in one take he leaned the wrong way and 280 lbs of Duke let him have it ALL backhanded!
There's a famous story that John Wayne told Bruce Dern that people would hate him for shooting The Duke. Dern replied, "Yeah, but they'll love me in Berkeley." Wayne laughed at Dern's comeback.
Bruce Dern plays this character superbly - truly evil man - hard to believe he plays Woody all those years later in the film "Nebraska" - if you havent seen it - its a great film just like this one
I've always wondered who bruce dern knew to become so prominent in the hollywood industry, because he's always been unremarkable to me. Also to land the role of the guy who kills the duke, some hollywood mogul had to arrange that for Dern. He knew somebody.
Amazing clip. It's weird to me that it's hard to explain to younger people what a big deal John Wayne is. And I agree that Bruce Dern is perfect in this scene.
Actually in truth It didn't affect his career at all .Black Sunday, Family Plot, The great Gatsby, Coming Home Some of the best movies of the 1970's . Two golden globe and two Academy award nominations. Still working today at almost ninety. About 200 credits not a sparse career
Bruce Dern got so much hate mail and threatening phone calls after this lol.

@michaelj.r457 I had heard that one...ty though
GREAT scene ! I love the fact that it is mostly silent with no score. Brave choice. Powerful stuff.
His most underrated film, I put it in his top 5 films.
I agree. I don’t know why this one is not more well known.
This is one of my favs….even though I hate this scene. 😢
@@mks9469honestly I think his performance in this was better than when he played Rooster Cogburn.

One of John Wayne’s best films
Awesome movie production
One of the greatest scenes in the history of cinema. Powerful stuff.
❤ great classic movie ❤
No green screens for the Duke. As real as Hollywood gets.

the best coming of age movie ever!!
Everytime I see Bruce Dern,I think of this movie.
lol!!! I watched an interview with him and he was saying that no matter how old he gets, he is most well known for killing John Wayne. 😂.
Music 🎶 Composer 🎼 By John Williams

One of the few movies John dies in. Dern took decades to overcome this. Work was far between.

After Watt: My Turn!
His roles were sparse because he wasn't the best actor, despite what his fanbase claim.
@@WintersWar Wow, I can't agree with this at all. This single scene shows how great he is, then add on all the work before and after....
Silent Running
Very great movie
I thought this was the only movie in which Waynes character dies-but there were others
I’m a huge John Wayne fan but I didn’t like his (The Shootist) and (The Cowboys).
