Please add some more screenshot like how to raise DFL and FFL on new DC 2016. Can we make the FFL and DFL 2016 now if yes then what could be the impact of it at application level
Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you
You're welcome
Great video. Do you have the process of taking down the old 2008R2 DC after new one has been up for a few weeks? Thanks
Uninstall all ADDS Roles and run dcpromo /forceremoval .
Here is the step by step guide to take down old 2008 R2 DC.

We currently have a 2 vm’s 2008 dcs that hold the FSMO roles and 1 physical 2016 dc. All the production servers including our Exchange servers point to the 2 old servers for DNS in the IP settings. So, what would be our best strategy in this case? Would it be better to create a new 2016 dc vm, transfer the roles respectively (2008 DC1 > 2016 DC1, 2008 DC2 > 2016 DC2); then swap the IP addresses? Thanks!
Perfect!!! Tanhks
Thank you very much.
Do we need to join our freshly installed 16 or 19 server joined to our existing old domain first then start with the migrating process ?
yes.
Hello. Thank you for your video. I followed your procedure until time 11:30. Here I have the following problem : I don't see my new 2016 server in the list of servers in the "Change Directory Server" window. Do you have any idea why ? Should I type the server name manually ?
make sure "adprep" and "forestprep" command runs successfully and there is no error. your secondary domain controller preferred DNS should be pointed to primary domain controller. Primary domain controller is accessible from secondary domain controller. Check firewall rule. restart system once. I hope it will resolve your problem.
It was great, Thank you.
Thank you
when you have adprep /forestorep and /domainprep did you raise A.D.functionality level ?
What if my PDC is still on Windows server 2008 only, non R2, will this migration to 2016 still work?
Yes. regardless of Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2, you can still migrate to Windows Server 2016.
after migrate, is safe to not demote the 1st ad?
wait for few months to make sure everything is going well. after that, you can demote 1st AD.
Hi. How to demote 2008 after this migration?
After the successful migration of DC to another server. Run "dcpromo" command, it will guide you to remove the Domain services feature. Delete old DC server from "Active directory sites and services" from the new server.
Can iu download free version of server 2008 r2 for this operation as i do not have the media kit anymore?
You can download Server 2008 R2 from Microsoft site. It is trial for 180 days. this trial period should be enough for migration process.
@@ITSystemEngineering Many thanks!
archive.org/details/microsoftwindowsserver2008r2server76.1.7100.0rc
Will this move all users and files to the new server?
Yes.
@@ITSystemEngineering are you sure about that. I mean i know this transfers the Users via active directory. but the files are still located on the the old server if you are using shared folders.
so if you have any shared folders on your current domain controller you will need them transferred to the new server.
@@undergod1987 you are correct. Users and related files or components will transfer during this migration . If you have other files or folders, you need to transfer using other methods.
Does it migrate the gpo's?
Yes.
