When I first watched this movie and he lost his pal Sam, the awful feeling of being totally alone was so brilliantly put across, it really affected me at the time. An awesome piece of story telling.
The pain is really bad when you lose your pet. A week ago my dog died, I got him when I was a little kid, so I grew up with him and had a very good bond. He was a very old dog (he was 13) and he was not in a great condition, he got ran over when he was about 8. He was still able to walk but he was in pain and couldn't jump. But it came to the point where he wouldn't eat, he became VERY skinny. Once we decided to take him to the vet, we later found out he had cancer and he had to be put down. I was there when it happened and it's sad.
This scene still makes me tear up, even after seeing this film countless times. The quiet atmosphere, Will singing softly, the small build up. It just brings everything to an emotional moment
I want to disagree with you so bad... but I really can't think of a sadder scene at the moment. This competes with "it's a wonderful life" and "the road" in terms of just horrifically sad scenes... I would argue that the scene immediately following this, with Will Smith the next day after loosing Sam rivals some scenes from Breaking Bad in terms of hopelessness...
This could make me cry more then any human death in a movie. It’s so sad because she got infected protecting will smiths character. And when he’s forced to kill her and can see the emotion in his face... he can’t even bare to look at her because all he sees is Samantha and she doesn’t exist anymore. And when she is dead he has become truly alone in the world.
Amazing acting by Smith in this scene and a great choice to not play any sad music or anything. Just his face and pure raw emotion. Oscar worthy scene!
I love the scene with Fred because it enforces just how mentally broken Robert is, it's a beautiful tragedy and really helps establish the tone for the movie.
My dad had a female dog when he was in the Army, she's name was "Rita" , he loved her so much. When he left the Army he could take it with him but he didn't. He told me that and I asked "Why you didn't? " he answered me "Because I am an idiot" than he started to cry. One of the few times i've seen him crying.
This scene rips my throat out every time. From this moment forward he knew he was alone in this world. I can’t imagine the pain one would go through in the middle of an outbreak like this, losing most of your family, and then the only family you have left.
This scene always makes me shed a tear, I had a German Sheperd named Seth. His death happened so suddenly and ended in a very similar way to this. (minus the virus and plotline etc) I had to carry him onto the vet's table for them to put him to sleep, I stood and cried for an hour befor I could sign those papers, I held him while the life left his body and had to carry him off the table again because he was such a big strong boy, the vet's weren't strong enough to do it. HE was the greatest thing I ever had, I cry writing this but its all happy memories. RIP Seth
Will Smith's acting in this scene is heartbreaking. The anguish and fear after he is forced to kill his only remaining family member is just.. incredible.
I remember seeing this in the theater with my brother who loves German Shepherds. I never seen him cry at a movie before this scene. His next dog was a German Shepherd and he named her Legend. She sadly passed from cancer three years later.
if the entire movie wasn't sad enough, this scene made it so much emotional and heart breaking :( first his family and now his dog??? tissue papers are the only companion now .
I Love Will Smith. He's one of my favorite actors of all time. Will literally begged the owner for this dog. He wanted this dog so badly because they formed such a bond when making this movie. But as we all know, the owner said no.
In the book, Neville realises the dog is going to die pretty soon. Knowing he has no time for small steps, he basically forces himself on the frightened animal, directly trying to comfort it. He accompanies it for an entire week, trying to lessen its suffering and at least giving it a peaceful death in safety.
The fact he waited for Sam to turn before killing her. He wanted her last moments to be cuddled. Only when it wasn’t Sam anymore was when he killed her
I didn’t have a dog when this movie came out. My wife and I now have three. When I saw this scene after not having seen the movie in 8 years I cried because I understood what he was feeling. A dog’s love is unconditional. He knows that this is going to be the last moment he shares with Samantha and he is heartbroken as he is all alone.
This is so hard to watch. I would be able to hunt a deer or a rabbit, but most of that is for food. Man's best friend is sad being killed, and with I am legend out just make me cry.
***** you have a lot of nerve saying something like that. He was the last man on earth with no other friends. His family died and so did his friends, and now he just lost another close friend. For a guy who thinks he's so cool, your really not.
How does it feel, having to sacrifice the only friend you ever had until that point. This scene has enough emotional load to make a stone cry, seriously.
My dog recently passed away last December and we have since got a new one, but now I can no longer watch this scene without tearing up because my dog got really sick and we had to put him down similar to this. But he lived a happy life so may he Rest In Peace ❤️
when i watched this movie since 2015 i cried a lot because of the deaths. i had dog which is also a german shepherd, he died because of food poisoning, what we last know is, we have a neighbor that hates him because of how hot headed the dog is. the dog wasn't really tough and he doesn't bite, but yeah its a trouble maker. our neighbor act to be nice to him and gave him a piece of bread with the food poisoning. when i found out thath did it, i called the cops and saw a few evidence and was arrested for animal cruelty (lol that's what i know, correct me if I'm wrong). i also buried my dog at the backyard . FUN FACT: my grandmother planted flowers on its grave and it was tulips. my dog likes to eat those tulips, so what we planted is tulips for his remembrance! also my dogs name is Tyler
I watched this when I was a kid and i cried like hell .... imagining myself in that situation loosing a friend ...that time i didn't have a dog now i have two dogs m very grateful for ... ❤️ Also it was my first Will Smith movie and i really admired him

Why you break your heart about it🤣🤣It is fun scene to those who understood 😎🤣
easily the saddest scene in any movie

This scene still makes me tear up, even after seeing this film countless times. The quiet atmosphere, Will singing softly, the small build up. It just brings everything to an emotional moment

You’d have to imagine that because it’s apparent that he strangled her to death

Will Smith one of my favourite actor of all time
me too
he's my number one
Saikat Sengupta agree👍
Well i mean, you knowledge on the subject is clearly limited. But he is a good actor, yes.
I wish his son would shut up though.
They way he looks away because he doesn't want to see him choking his beloved dog to death is so sad
By far the saddest movie scene ever.

I agree 😢 idk why but can’t think of any sadder scene
Green Mile when they executed John Coffey knowing he was innocent and likely an angel.
This is the only movie death that no matter how many times I watch, still makes my grown ass man macho eyes tear up.
That's because you ain't one, tough guy?
Not even Marley and Me?
Lol, such a lame reply. What a loser.

@@lethalchocobo1886 Shut up. You a man? Then keep to yourself if you have nothing better to do!
Most powerful scene in the movie

I love the scene with Fred because it enforces just how mentally broken Robert is, it's a beautiful tragedy and really helps establish the tone for the movie.
ended up crying til the end of the movie
RIP Seth
Sorry for your loss

I feel so bad because he started crying when he had no choice to kill the dog. I started crying.
i cried so loud during this scene
lol
QuarantineZ You find a dog dying funny? You are sick.
This movie was sooop good, and Will Smiths performance. He should've won an oscar

In the book, Neville realises the dog is going to die pretty soon. Knowing he has no time for small steps, he basically forces himself on the frightened animal, directly trying to comfort it. He accompanies it for an entire week, trying to lessen its suffering and at least giving it a peaceful death in safety.

Sam kept her promise. She protected daddy! 😭
The fact he waited for Sam to turn before killing her. He wanted her last moments to be cuddled. Only when it wasn’t Sam anymore was when he killed her
In the beginning I tought the reason she went berserk was because she felt he was choking and hurting her.
This scene is so sad, when the music hits after Sam dies it truly shows you that Robert is alone, totally alone now, great movie!
For a guy who thinks he's so cool, your really not.
daboss258 preach...👏👏👏 Samantha died on Neville's birthday too. Worst present ever. 😢
Are you serious grand theft auto 5 "ohh Trevor and Michael tell them about the time you ran over a dog and the owner!"

How does it feel, having to sacrifice the only friend you ever had until that point.

The feels on the bus go round and round.....
***** nah man I'm just 13.
