I'm 27 and have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease on my L5 disc and have been dealing with herniated disc pain for 3 months now. I had to quit my job as a trucker. It's very scary being told by my doctor that I'm a candidate for back surgery at 27. I'm honestly desperate to try anything that will return me back to normal

You're young. Research every single movement to treat disc degeneration. Yoga is extremely good for this. There are Brazilian jiu jitsu warm up drills that are perfect for opening up the hips and low back.
I believe the reason why your discs have degenerated is secondary to lack of movement, exercising all those small muscles that hold those discs together, + spinalis, illiocostalis, & All those muscles that control internal and external rotation of the hips. You're a trucker. You've been sitting in the same position for hours and hours on end.
I can say this because I've been driving for 23 years and my L4 L5 disc is degenerated. Nevertheless I do CrossFit and yoga. I'm holding my own, but I refuse to let them cut me. I am not at that stage and I think spinal fusion is way over the top unnecessary at this stage.
There are people that have lived with stuff like this for decades, the pain eventually goes away, the nerve learns to live in a smaller space and adjusts. Don't let them cut you unless It gets serious enough to where you've lost feeling in a leg or you can't control your bowels.

@@eduardoramirez4768 I’m 19 years old, I had to have a microdiscectomy almost exactly one year ago because I had a completely blown l5 s1 disc and it was impossible for me to move sleep sit and exist. I will say that after the surgery I woke up with IMMEDIATE relief, any longer with that pain and I was going to end my life because it was so terrible. So if you get to that point get the microdiscectomy because there are no fusions and no rods and I’ve been able to return to work in construction for 8 months now. I will say that now I have to live the rest of my life with the concern of my back getting worse but it’s better than existing the way I did before.

Only general comments. If your surgeon has determined the L5-S1 disc is the cause of your pain, ALIF is a very acceptable option. Make sure you understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives and you have exhausted all non surgical options. Try to minimize the use of any narcotic medications. Chronic use will make it even harder to stop use of the medication, even after a successful surgery.
