When Steve screamed to his father "the wrong parent died!! " it was the last straw for Nell he went too far and she had to manifest herself in one way or another to make them stop. That's how i took it anyway. This whole thing is so tragic.
That’s exactly what it was! Nell comes through when they get to heated b/c it’s not only not about them but about what happened. None of them know how to deal with it.
"I was here the whole time. I was screaming and nobody could see me." I feel that this is a metaphor, not only for Nell, but for all of them. They are so busy dealing with their own trauma, that none of them seem to see each other. I feel this show is a great catalyst for families and friends to hold serious discussions of mental illness as well. This family is dealing with "actual" ghosts, but everybody has ghosts in their past. And as a society, we need to listen more. Be there for the people we love. Be there for each other without stigma and judgement...
Well I think the main point of the show is whether the stuff everyone's seeing is either the result of mental illness or actual ghosts. There were many points in the show that leads to mental illness, but at the same time, there were also many points in the show that point to the stuff being paranormal.
This is my favorite episode in the entire season. The cinematography and the performances were spot on. This episode should get an Emmy or any award for cinematography.
funny, I actually found the "one take" gimmicky and the acting to show its weaknesses with the forced long takes. strange how we all see things in different ways.
@@alienanxiety Something is only a gimmick when it's overused. One-takes are rarely done because most filmmakers and actors aren't skilled enough to pull them off effectively. Here it was used appropriately and executed brilliantly, which is no surprise considering Mike Flanagan is a brilliant filmmaker.
kaneinight I can understand people liking it, but the fact that Steven and Nikki kept stopping to point out "this is still the same shot" proves that the director has broken the dramatic connection with the audience and drawn attention to the craft. It's cool, but I just happen to think the best direction is unseen direction. It's all subjective though.
@@alienanxiety The fact they kept asking themselves "is this still one shot" proves you wrong. They knew there was something unusual about this episode, they suspected it was the long takes, but because they were into the story so much they weren't actually sure if they were right. I was the same the first time I watched it. I kept catching myself thinking "wait, there was no cut yet, was there? Did I miss it?" I think it's a really clever way to put emphasis on the relationships between characters, so much so, it's almost like being at a stage theatre. We get to see them almost "live" just being with each other, talking to each other and being present the whole time, even out of shot, instead of only when the director chooses for them to be there. I think it was a brilliant stylistic and narrative choice for this episode, considering it was all about their family relations. Also, you should really watch the BTS for this episode. It's amazing how much work went into pulling this off.
@@Code0866 okay so you know how Theo has her touch and Shirley has the sleep talking, Nell's power is clarity that's how she was able to go back and see herself as the bent neck lady. And the house wanted the kids to come back so it could get each of their power so when Nell stepped in the house for the first time they moved in, she was already dead because time doesn't exist in the house and that's how she was able to haunt herself.
Regarding Nikki's comment about the statues, the showrunner revealed that the Hill House set was designed to make the viewer feel as thought THEY were being watched by Hill House. I'm not talking about all the ghosts that appear in the shadows and the backgrounds of numerous shots, he meant the actual design of the set. The placement of windows, statues, light/lamps, furniture, everything was meticulously placed and designed to intentionally put you on edge.
Really interesting, makes me wonder how they did it. The statues definitely made me uneasy even simply for being life-sized, sometimes with focus shifting to them. Hmm, I guess none of the beds were by the wall, which means danger could approach from multiple sides (like the face in the first episode behind Nell). When they gathered during the storm it was in the middle of a room as well and on top of that the room had like 8 exits, which also doesn't make you feel safe at all. Same when Nell slept on the couch after her "bad dream". I'll keep looking for other examples.
Luke is my favorite Crain sibling because it seems like beyond his drug addiction, he’s an incredibly loving person who will do anything for the people he cares about. His addiction made him selfish and do bad things but we see his personality since he’s been sober for 90 days. He’s brave for facing his fears and that ending scene breaks my heart. As you can see by the other comments, this episode is highly favored because of its direction. The long shots are my favorite because it’s like a stage show. If you notice there were small moments of imperfections that the actors stayed in character. Theo falling was one and young Hugh stepping over a flashlight or a part of the chandelier was another. People also stumbled over some of their lines but it was kept in because it was more authentic. I really want to applaud the child actors because their scenes were long shots as well and they were so well behaved and stayed in character too. I think the kids need more credit in this show because they really bring it home for me.
I love how he gets the nature of the dad being "haunted" by the mom, and talking to her when he needs her. He's not actually haunted, she's just always with him.
Those long shots must have taken so much planning and rehearsal. That opening scene was like 15 minutes, all the way until the chandelier fell in the old house. The long shots, especially those in the funeral home, totally put me there in the room with them, real time. Amazing.
Me, too! This was the best episode of TV of the year - FOR SURE - but possibly, this series may be my favorite of all time! No lie. Everything about this masterpiece was by design. Flanagan, man...wow!
Ok, probably a bit late commenting, but I do need to pass my thoughts on for consideration as Im pretty impressed with this whole show and Ep 6 in particular. 1) the entire interior set of Hill House and the Harris funeral home was built conjoined, before filming of even the first episode started, just so Mike Flanagan could get one single transition shot in one single episode. 2) the entire conjoined set was a maze of hidden passages and hidey holes so cast and crew could move around unseen when off camera. 3) yes, they built an elevator so the cameraman could do a smooth transition between the two storeys, and then the crew had to hide the rig and themselves in about ten seconds before the camera swung back. 4) they halted filming for a month, rehearsed twice a day six days a week, with fifteen cast and thirty crew, before turning a single reel. 5) the only CGI used was the shattering windows, and that was for safety. 6) there were no hidden cuts, the only cuts were the ones we see. 7) these technical achievements are vastly impressive old-school film making at its best. And yet, overriding all this effort and rehearsal and intense work, the one thing everyone will remember is the final static shot of Nell standing beside her casket and saying “None of you could see me. No-one could see me.” Seriously, this script was cruel.
ik that people usually refer to episode 5 as being the most memorable for its twist ending but personally this is my favorite one for the masterful way it was shot, acted, and written. also that ending where we see Nell while her childhood self is heard in the background absolutely _wrecked_ me. that is probably the first time I've witnessed something on screen that was equally so horrifying and sorrowful the ghost Steven saw was the mom. and btw I think you two were the only ones who remembered that Nell liked buttons xD
Fun Fact: the day before they shot the 17 minute shot (the 3rd shot of the episode) Kate Siegel (Theo) found out she was pregnant with her second kid, who her husband Mike Flanagan (the director, producer, and writer of the show) and her aptly named Theodora.
7:33 I have to say that I didn't see Nell in the background on my first viewing. From what I've read a lot of people didn't see her, which encapsulates this episode perfectly.
Little Nell was dancing in the same steps and the w same path as her older self when she goes back to the house. THAT’S why she sees the bent neck lady. This show and it’s allegory on grief and time and memory and premonition is fantastic!
This episode is so tragic. It always makes me cry, Nell was such a good person she was always there for the family and she got ignored a lot in return even when she needed help the most. So now it's her wake and she's dead and instead of remembering her they're all fighting with each other.

Fantastic job editing this episode Steven! You’re always delivering QUALITY stuff and I couldn’t love you guys more. Amazing reaction ♥️ Also they built the set of the show specifically for this episode! The house and the mortuary set are connected hallways!
Thank you Hannah!!!! It always puts a big smile on my face when someone notices the editing. Going into it I thought it was going to be an easy one because there was a ton of time with the walking but it was really hard... there was so much amazing stuff this episode.
Steven saw the mom, the rest of the time it was Nell. This episode is perfection. The acting, camera work and storyline came together in a truly magical way! BRILLANT! And I tear up at the end everrrrytiiiime. Haha. Great video. Much Love😁💚
Spot on Steven, think there was a total of 4 shots, only editing is connecting the shots together. There are articles where the director speaks about how they achieved it, basically months of planning/rehearsing etc. Think the longest 1shot is 17 minutes, anyone fluffs their lines and they all have to start again. Its an amazing achievement especially for the child actors. There were some mistakes/improvisations that they kept going and it just added to the intensity, like the touch lady falling off the sofa edge.
From what I read the falling off the couch was in the script. The thing that they were worried about was the actress that falls off the couch found out she was pregnant the night before this shoot. They were worried about her safety.
EVERYTIME I watch this episode I lose it at the end with the young Luke and Nellie and the end with Nell at the coffin. It breaks my heart! Love you guys so much! ❤️
Those ghosts that the Mom saw had to have been the Hill family. I think Steve got scared for a minute. LOL. The bent neck lady so far is the scariest ghost in the series. Each time that I've been watching these episodes every time that I see her I jump like crazy. The next one has to be the funeral and God only knows what goes are going to pop up there. Keep up the good work.
Always, that ending gets me. Everyone became obsessed with the shot and the ghost but not, Nellie. The statues remind me of the Doctor Who, stand alone episode of "Blink"... Ooh, something to react too, y'all.
The first time I saw this episode I was so enthralled with the characters, the performances, the camera work, I never even saw bent-necked Nell standing there in the aisle with them in that scene where they're all looking at the casket! And she was right there in plain sight. Needless to say then, the first time I binged the whole series I saw exactly NONE of the hidden ghosts.
I’ve also noticed after rewatching this episode it has very little musical score. I think they wanted us to feel the tension, sadness, helplessness through out the show without any interruption or guidance. This was probably one one of the best episodes of tv I’ve seen in 2018.
this tv show especially this episode is a masterpiece. the long takes, acting, the writing everything about this episode is amazing and the plot twist is mindblowing
Yeah, speaking from experience, Steve is probably the hardest hit, even if he doesn't show it that much. Eldest siblings tend to have a personal duty of care over their younger siblings, and nothing hurts quite like seeing for yourself that you failed in that, even if there was nothing you could do to stop it.
The one shot sequence here kind of reminded me of the one take that happened at the battle of Castle Black with that huge sweeping coordinated shot of all the men and wildlings fighting in the courtyard. Pretty impressive
pretty sure we have noticed any of the background ghosts... we really aren't paying attention to the background. we want to focus and pay close attention to the story.
I heard that the wolf with the red eyes they saw in the kitchen was a nod or an easter egg from the original Hill House novel, where the same situation happened to them in the book There's actually quite a few easter eggs from the book in this show and i just love how much detail was put into this.
I already seen the whole show but watching it with you guys again make me understand the show even more, i love rewatching shows with you guys, your reactions are authentic!!
'Masterpeice'. That's one way to describe this episode. It was filmed in 5 friggin shots. Imagine the amount work and concentration they had to put into this. Even the cameramen had their coreography. Simply amazing.
The continuous shot sequence in this episode is beautiful. The series didn't scare me at all but I was so invested in the story and characters that I ended up crying a lot.
I'm so excited to see the rest of this story unfold in front of you two. I feel like by episode 10 the both of you will find some catharsis and be taken on an emotional and spiritual journey just as the Crain family had.
Mike Flangan who directed the show is also directing the upcoming sequel to The Shining: Doctor Sleep. Can't wait to see what he does with it. He also directed the movies: Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald's Game & Oculus.
right after the casket falls and the light comes back on is the sign of Nell's presence in the room. During the flashback scene when the family find Nell the power comes back in their mansion. The same thing happened on that scene to show us that it was Nell who made the casket fall and the family members still victimize themselves instead of trying to understand Nell.
I am SO excited for the two of you to watch each additional episode... This series.... I just can't wait to see what they can do next. Phenomenal from start to finish.
I just happened to be up early from work.....let's be honest...I haven't slept yet. Working on my Punisher reaction. I have been DYING for these next few episodes.
First time commenting on one of your videos. I saw episode 5 and 6 back to back right before bed. Nightmares were had that night! The ones where you wake up searching for a scream. My partner even heard me making noises later that night. After these two episodes I only watched the show during the day.
I was so fascinated with the scene dialogue that I didn't even catch that it was all one-take. lol Great reaction. Great editing & editing observation. 😊❤️
Hill House: Everyone is broken and awful to each other The ending of this one ruined me. Baby Nell and Luke just hit me every time. "I'll never let you go again, I promise" Ugh 😓😭
I'm currently on my 4th rewatch of the show and wish I would have seen you guys review channel sooner! My stepson and I watched it above about this time last year and hes so scand he still scares the hell out of me by standing in the hallway or outside bending his neck. Your reactions are so good and I love how and to show you are!
I counted 4 cuts in this episodes, making 5 long shots, which is amazing. the first is a smooth fade done digitally in the hallway between houses. the second was the chandelier crashing, and the other two were carefully hidden inbetween lightning strikes and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cut. Amazing cinematography.
This episode is amazing, so many emotions playing out and it's beautiful done, but so heartbreaking and everytime we the viewer finds out another puzzle piece to the bigger picture just draws us in more deeply to this expertly crafted series. I hope they win all the things for this!
I love this episode. It was such a good episode, i feel like I'm not supposed to be watching them fight with each other during that one scene where they bring up their issues with each other.
This episode was the hardest for them to film and yes you are right it's full of one shots that they had to time very carefully to be able to get to the next scene and keep the shot with no mistakes as well. If you noticed though when the mother Olivia is walking down the hall the staues are looking at her and that too was hard to do because they had to switch the staues very quickly before the camera went back to the hallway and the staues were standing as they had been before.

From what I read the falling off the couch was in the script. The thing that they were worried about was the actress that falls off the couch found out she was pregnant the night before this shoot. They were worried about her safety.
@@Celebrian666 That was a great movie
The buttons on Nell's eyes are the same buttons that represented mom and Nell when Luke showed her the buttons/counting game as children.
Jesus I cried at the end with twins and adult Luke 😭😭😭😭😭
Oh and Nell has always been the Bent Neck Lady, time is not linear, Nell was being haunted by her own death the whole time.
The ending of this episode, damn! this show made me cry more than it scared me.
they show us how empatized with ghosts!
EVERYTIME I watch this episode I lose it at the end with the young Luke and Nellie and the end with Nell at the coffin. It breaks my heart! Love you guys so much! ❤️
This episode was so heartbreaking. All the acting was fantastic. I really feel for Luke the most tho.
The entire episode is only 5 shots. There was a mini documentary on how they did it and it took months to plan and execute. Fantastic episode
finally you finished everyones favorite episode! this one came out unusually fast but im still grateful lol. thank you nikki and steven
This is one of my favorite episodes of any tv episode! The way they did that all in one take was amazing!
15:06 when you thought Hazel on The Bed was scary - Eugene the WheelChair Boy shows up.
The last few seconds of this episode are my favourite of the entire series
The one shot sequence here kind of reminded me of the one take that happened at the battle of Castle Black with that huge sweeping coordinated shot of all the men and wildlings fighting in the courtyard. Pretty impressive
Nikki at the start of the entire show : "I don't wanna watch anymore!!!"
Nikki at the end of this episode : "I wanna watch the next episode!!!"
After the series you should see 'The Haunting of Hill House Hidden Ghosts'...amazing how many ghosts you may not have noticed!
pretty sure we have noticed any of the background ghosts... we really aren't paying attention to the background. we want to focus and pay close attention to the story.
@@NikkiStevenReact Please react to the background ghosts at the end of the series, it made the overall quality of the show even better :)
I feel like the swooping single shot camera moments were supposed to be through the eyes of Nell maybe :) great episode!
I heard that the wolf with the red eyes they saw in the kitchen was a nod or an easter egg from the original Hill House novel, where the same situation happened to them in the book
There's actually quite a few easter eggs from the book in this show and i just love how much detail was put into this.
I already seen the whole show but watching it with you guys again make me understand the show even more, i love rewatching shows with you guys, your reactions are authentic!!
Whew. This episode still gives me the chills! So moving and emotional.
'Masterpeice'. That's one way to describe this episode. It was filmed in 5 friggin shots. Imagine the amount work and concentration they had to put into this. Even the cameramen had their coreography. Simply amazing.
The way this episode was shot is amazing
This was the first episode I realized things in the house were definitely moving. Like the statues in the hallway turned their heads.
That one shot at the beginning was award worthy!
The continuous shot sequence in this episode is beautiful. The series didn't scare me at all but I was so invested in the story and characters that I ended up crying a lot.
This episode was brilliant. So many long single shot. Probably some of the best acting you will ever see.
This episode was absolutely mind blowing. I've watched this twice and you guys actually make me wanna watch again. The story is told so well.
16:28 Dogs were once killed on the property of course.
The longest shot is 24 min freaking amazing!
There's great interview videos to watch after you're all done 😉
right after the casket falls and the light comes back on is the sign of Nell's presence in the room.
This entire episode was done in 6 shots the longest was 19 minutes I believe- it is so cool.
such an amazing episode
Y’all will have to go back and see all the ghosts in the background of each episode.......super creepy!
Yeah it's alot of hidden ghosts in this show u will miss
My favorite episode of any show I've ever seen. So beautiful, haunting, creepy, tragic, and raw. The camerawork gives it a voyeuristic feel.
First time commenting on one of your videos. I saw episode 5 and 6 back to back right before bed. Nightmares were had that night! The ones where you wake up searching for a scream. My partner even heard me making noises later that night. After these two episodes I only watched the show during the day.
Luke in real life. Is british. With a great accent.
I was so fascinated with the scene dialogue that I didn't even catch that it was all one-take. lol
Great reaction. Great editing & editing observation. 😊❤️
Hill House: Everyone is broken and awful to each other
The ending of this one ruined me. Baby Nell and Luke just hit me every time. "I'll never let you go again, I promise" Ugh 😓😭
The whole funeral scene that whole 17 minutes seen was all one shot and one take. They are such amazingly gifted actors
Every reaction to this show starts with Nikki "oh my God" 😂😂😂love it
I'm currently on my 4th rewatch of the show and wish I would have seen you guys review channel sooner!
Amazing cinematography.
this was my favourite episode, loved the long shots and the whole family getting together. so sad at the end tho :(((
WOW THAT WAS FAST! I’m living for these late night updates!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
This episode is amazing, so many emotions playing out and it's beautiful done, but so heartbreaking and everytime we the viewer finds out another puzzle piece to the bigger picture just draws us in more deeply to this expertly crafted series. I hope they win all the things for this!
Daario Naharis is a good actor
I love your reactions! They help stave off the craving for more episodes of Hill House :)
First comment on RUclips ever: I first started watching y’all watching Walking Dead when my oldest was hospitalized and been watching ever since. Thank you for being a much needed entertainment in a much needed time!
This episode is a technical masterpiece.
anyone else catch how the sad piano song from this show is like the sad violin stark song from got? at least the first five notes of the melody.
this is not related to the show, and I'm sure you guys have heard lots of things like this from other subscribers, but thank you for your channel. I have lived alone away from my home country and moved from one place to another for the last 10 years. Today things were a bit tough, but when I got into the empty house, my first thought was 'Let's turn on youtube to watch nikki and steven's reactions', and that thought just calmed me down. And I have watched most of them, so I'm just rewatching and rewatching and yes, rewatching them over and over again. There's something really heart-warming about your videos, just with your interactions and reactions. I'm not usually a commenter, but please know that I am incredibly grateful for your channel.
i love watching your reaction videos to this show cause the story is so amazingly written you know, and it makes you think. and i think its really fun and interesting to hear your thoughts about the episodes cause it also makes me look at some of the things a bit differently and idk i think its pretty cool.
Such an amazing episode and more amazing performances by each of the actors as the adult and younger versions played off each other. Way to point out that magnificent single shot, Steven. It was filmed beautifully. Amazing reactions too!! 😉👍🏼👍🏼
That was the BEST episode and yes, the storms were only one shot. There's actually a video on RUclips where they break it down. Love your videos already excited for the next one.
best episode of all tv show in 2018
WOW! What a good episode. I hope they do a second season. Love your reaction for hill house!
So well shot. I think the whole episode is 2 one shot scenes. There's a really great feature on the shooting of this ep.
i hate that they only do one reaction to this show a week, its SO good it deserves more but i cant wait till next monday i love this show so much and cant wait to keep seeing your reactions. good job on noticing the statues moving i didnt think you would catch that!
not sure this is a show we'd want to watch more than one a week... it's is so good and is super deep, feels more rewarding this show after letting an episode sink in for a week.
Nikki & Steven React thats probably true i never really experienced that because i cant control myself and just binged it in 2 days but i totally understand lmao and now i want to see your guys reaction but please make sure if thats the most rewarding way for you to watch it keep doing it. this is just my all time favorite show now so im a little biased 😂 thank you for sharing
Just finished work and yeesss, a reaction video to watch on the train going home. Love this episode 💜🎥
I cry every time!!
PS. I LOVE that little Ghost plushie!!
Those one shots are incredible!!!!
the first cut was at 8:15, which was more than 15 minutes into the episode. this episode was amazing.
You, Guys, are appreciation-artists! Thank You!
